1 Claim. (Cl. 88-39) Thisinvention relates to mechanical devices used in combination with books for retaining leaves of a book in position to facilitate reading, which also is adapted to be-moved downwardly to follow lines on a page, and which is also provided with magnifying means to enlarge the printing to facilitate reading; and in particular rod having. clamping means on one end for securing the rod in position at the center of a book with the pages open, a bar providing a liner slidably mounted on the rod and also a bar of magnifying glass slidably mounted on the rod to facilitate reading relatively small type.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a mechanical device for use with book to facilitate reading wherein liners are provided for following lines and magnifying devices are provided for enlarging the printed text.

Various types of mechanical devices have been provided' for use in combination with books to facilitate reading without holding the books or parts thereof with the hands of the reader, however, with such devices it is necessary to mount elements upon a stand upon which a book may be positioned and in numerous instances stands of this type are not available. -With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a staff or rod positioned' at the center with pages of a book extended from bothsides thereof, a clamp for securing the rod in position upon the book, liners slidably mounted on. thev rod Patent to. facilitate following lines, and magnifying means. also 353 slidably mounted on the rod and positioned to enlarge the printed text.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a mechanical device for use in combination with a book in which the device is provided with a liner for following lines on pages on a book, a magnifying glass to facilitate reading small print of a book, and a clamping means for retaining the device in position upon a book.

Another object of the invention is to provide a liner and magnifying device for use in combination with books to facilitate reading in which the device is mounted directly upon a book.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combination liner and magnifying device for use in combination with books in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an elongated rod, a screw clamp mounted on one end of the rod and positioned to retain the rod in the center of a book with pages of the book extended laterally therefrom, a bar providing a liner slidably mounted on the rod, and a magnifying glass also slidably mounted on the rod.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan view showing the device mounted upon a book the pages of which are open, and showing the rod of the device nested in the center of the book between pages and also showing a liner extended across the pages and slidably mounted on the rod.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the improved book liner and magnifier showing a magnifying glass the form of an elongated bar and also showing spaced notches in the inner edge of the bar.

Figure 4 is a cross section through the lock bar taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3 illustrating the connection for securing a magnifying bar on the locking bar.

Figure 5 is a perspective view showing a magnifying bar attached to the lock bar.

Figure 6 is a view showing a liner adapted to be used onthe lock bar in place of the magnifying bar.

Figure 7 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 11" illustrating a modification wherein the lock bar is replaced with a rod having a mounting strip on the upper 'end and wherein the rod, which supports the liner or magnifying bar is positioned in the center of a book.

Figure 8 is a plan view, similar to that shown in Fig. 7 with the parts shown on an enlarged scale and showing the locking rod, liner, and clamp, with other parts omitted.

Figure 9 is an end elevational view of the rod assembly shown in Fig. 8 showing a magnifying glass attached to the rod and also showing an L-shaped clip providing one side of a clamp on the upper end of the rod.

Figure 10 is a perspective view illustrating a further modification wherein a pair of L-shaped clips are secured by a thumb nut on a stud on an offset section at the upper end of the rod.

Figure 11 is anend elevational view of the device showing the clamp in the position of holding the rod on a book on the upper end and showing a magnifying barv positioned on the intermediate part of the rod.

Figure 12 is a perspective view showing a device similar to that shown in Fig. l0 with the L-shaped clips positioned in combination with the L-shaped upper end of the rod and with the clip positioned under the rod omitted. Figure 13 is a cross section through the lock bar shown in Fig,s.,2' and 3 showing astop for limiting the travel of the liner or magnifying bar on the rod.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved liner and magnifier of this invention includes a lock bar 10 having a head 11 on the outer edge and spaced notches 12 in the inner edge, a liner 13 adapted to be secured to the bead 11 with a clamping screw 14 in a socket 15 and a magnifying bar 16 also adapted to be secured to the bead 11 of the lock bar 10 with the screw 14 and the with the socket 17 extended through an opening 18 in the magnifying bar 16. The screw 14, which is provided with a head 19, is threaded in the socket 17 with fingers 20 and 21 extended from the inner end of the socket and over the bead 11 on the edge of the lock bar 10, and the screw is retained in adjusted positions with a lock nut 22.

By loosening the screw 14 and the lock nut 22 the liner 13 or magnifying bar 16 may be moved longitudinally on the lock bar 10 and with notches, such as the notches 12 extended over bolts or other fastening elements between the pages of a ledger the liner or magnifying bar may be anchored or secured in position upon a ledger, such as the ledger 23, shown in Fig. l.

The lock bar is provided with a limit clip 24, shown in detail in Fig. 13 and, as illustrated in Fig. 7, the clip or clamp is formed with

25 and 26 to adjust the position of the stop on the rod or bead and to also permit the clip to be removed when use thereof is not desired. The spring clip 24 is of conventional design with the

In the design illustrated in Figs. 7 to 12, inclusive a rod 30 having an arm 31 extended at a right angle from the upper end providing an L-shaped portion is positioned in the center between

32 and 33 of. a book 34, shown in Fig. 7 and a liner 35 or magnifying bar 36 is clamped on the rod with a thumb screw 37 which is threaded into a socket 38 through which the rod 30 extends, as shown in Figs. 9 and 11, and with the rod secured in position on a book, or the like with a clamping screw 39 extended through an eye 40 at the end of the arm 31 through a leg 41 of a clip angle 42 the rod may be clamped in position upon the book and the liner or magnifying glass moved longitudinally thereon. The screw 39 is provided with a head 43 and the parts are clamped together by a thumb nut 44 threaded on the outer end of the screw.

In the design illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11 a rod 45 having a right angularly disposed arm 46 at the upper end, similar to the arm 31 and which is provided with an eye 47, is secured to clip angles 48 and 49 with a stud 50 having a thumb nut 51 on the outer end and the vertically disposed leg of the clip angle 48, which is positioned against the inner surfaces of the rod 45 and arm 46 is provided with tapering edges 52 and 53. By this means the leg of the clamp positioned upon the face of the book is provided with tapering edges to improve the appearance. In the design illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11 a liner, such as the liner 35, or a bar 54 of magnifying material may be clamped to the rod 45 with a thumb screw 55 which is threaded into the end of a socket 56 through which the rod 45 extends, thereby making it possible to midway between the ends of the bar,

, tioned to clamp the lock slide the liner or magnifying bar on the rod 45 and also providing means for clamping the liner or magnifying bar in position upon the rod.

With the parts formed, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive a device is provided for mounting a liner or magnifying bar on :a ledger with the notches 12 positioned to anchor the lock bar o er bolts or screws extended through inner edges of the pages of the ledger whereby the liner 13 or magnifying bar 16 may be held in position upon the pages of the ledger and may also be adjusted from one line to the other; and, by the same means, the liner or magnifying bar may be clamped in position upon the rod 30 or shown in Figs. 7 to 12 whereby lines of a book may be followed and the printing may be magnified to facilitate reading or copying.

The clamps 24 may be used on the lock bars or rods and the positions of the clamps may readily be adjusted to limit movement of the liners or magnifying bars.

The book liner and magnifier of this invention or any of the parts thereof may be made of any suitable material and the device may be of any desired size and particularly of any width, breadth, or length.

It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

A book liner and a magnifier comprising a lock bar having a bead on the outer edge and notches in the opposite or inner edge, an am having an opening therein extended at a right angle from the upper end of the lock bar, a clip angle positioned on and depending from said arm, a screw having a thumb nut thereon extended through the arm and a horizontally disposed leg of the clip angle for securing the clip angle to the arm, a transversely disposed magnifying bar substantially semicircular in cross-section positioned across the lock bar and having a transversely disposed cylindrical opening therethrou'gh, said cylindrical opening being positioned an internally threaded ferrule positioned in the opening extended through the magnifying bar and having co-acting bead gripping jaws on the inner end, and a screw having a head on the outer end threaded in said ferrule and posibar between the gripping jaws for retaining the magnifying bar in adjusted positions on said lock bar.
