WHEEL-HUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,728, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed December 15,1883. (No model.) V
T wZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ARTEMAS M. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Hubs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperro tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to wheel hubs in which the wooden portion is strengthened by one or more solid metallic bands compressed in annular grooves turned in the periphery;
. and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the unfinished state of the hub, the seamless metallic bands are placed over the annular grooves, and, being held in this position, are subjected to mechanical compression, forc ing them bodily inward at all points, until their ribs enter the annular grooves and their flanged outer portions are forced into the wood of the hub even with the peripheral surface thereof, the sharp edges of the flanges, by reason of the short bevels, meeting and joining neatly with the peripheral fibers of the wood, which easily conform thereto. The object to be accomplished is to strengthen the wheel-hub, not only in its central part between the bands, where the mortises are made and the ends of the spokes are inserted, but also, and more particularly, to strengthen the ends of the hub, so as to prevent splitting or checking outside of the bands and toward. the ends of the hub. The grain or fiber of the wood at eachside of the rectangular groove, which is liable to become loosened and to rise by the action of atmospheric moisture and abrasion,' is protected by thelateral overlapping flanges of the band, which look the fiber ends in place, and prevent, to a great extent, the access of moisture. In this manner great strength and solidity are given to the hub. After the strengthening-bands have been compressed into the hub, the latter is again placed in the lathe and finished in proper shape to receive the point and butt bands.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combinatiomwith the wooden wheelhub having turned into its periphery annular grooves of rectangular form in cross-section, of the metallic seamless bands 0, having the interior rectangular annular rib or fillet, D, I and the broad outer portion, E, the said rib I00 having a beveled flange, F, on both sides thereof, extending from its base to the point i, and terminating in a short and sharp bevel, Z, which joins the outer surface of the band in a sharp edge, whereby the bands can be easily forced into the grooves in the hub even with the seam, the fibers of the wood made to conform to the said short bevels Z, and the edges of the band and the fibers of the wood will fit together without breaking the fibers of the 10 latter, substantially as and for the purposes specified. r
