UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BAKER, or MUSOATINE, IOWA.
FRUIT, VEGETABL E, AND MEAT CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,716, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed October 31,1833. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
- Be it known that 1, JOHN BAKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans for Preserving Fruit, Vegetables, and Meats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fruit, vegetable, and meat cans; and it consists of a can-con structed to be hermetically sealed, and pro vided with a central tube which is closed at its inner end and open at its outer end, which is fastened to one end of the can, substantially as hereinafter described and set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a can having the central tube; Fig. 2 is a top View. 1
A is the body of the can, having at the top a circular opening, a, surrounded by a groove, 5, to receive the edge of the top 13, and in which groove the edge of the top is soldered when the can is sealegl up. i
O is a tube, closed at its lower end and open at the top, inserted through the center of the top B and securely soldered to it, and extended downward nearly the whole length of the can, as shown.
The can being filled in the usual manner,
and the top B securely soldered to the can, it I is then placed in my process-kettle, or any other kettle suitable for the purpose, and the tube will at once be filled with water or steam, whichever may be employed for the purpose, and by means of the heat thus centrally-applied the contents of the can will be cooked more evenly, thoroughly, and rapidly, and with less liability of being scorched or discolored, and will keep better than when put up and cooked in cans not having my central tube.
' It is evident that the central tube may be extended through and be fastened to the bottom of the can; but I prefer it attached to the top, as herein set fort What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The can A, constructed to be hermetically sealed, and-provided with the central tube, 0, closed at its inner end and open at its outer end, which is fastened to one end of the can, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my siggature'in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BAKER.
