SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,561, dated March 25, 1884:.

Be it known that we, LAWRENCE B. KOIINL'E and WILLIAM B. HAMILTON, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoltingGhests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to improvements in bolting-chests.

-Figure l is an inside view of the reel-head. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through line x of the same, and also through the contiguous portion of the boltingchest. It shows also the adjustment of the reel end and its attachments in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a View of the outfecdspout, (and its lateral danges) which is attached to the outside ot' the bolting-chest, and which leads through the opening seen in the short projecting sleeve on the central or stationary section into the reel. Fig. 4t is a vertical section through a portion of the boltin g-chest and the reel-head, and shows the adjustment of th latter in spaces and dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a view of the moving section of the reel-head, as seen from the inside. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through both sections of the reel-head, the danged ring, andA the feedspout, the parts being separated to identify them. A is the reelhead. `It is in two sections or parts, a and b; Section a is in the form of a concentric ring, preferably of metal, which may be cast or spun fron'ithe sheet, and is directly attached to the end of the frame of the reel, and revolves with it. In apolygonal reel, its

The sectional views, Figs. 2, 4, and 6, eX- hibit theinwardly-projecting annulus f, which forms the revolving circular apron for distributing the meal into the reel, as described.
In these figures it will be noticed that the outer or revolving plate, a, has a rib, b', extending around it inside, between the raised angular ring or annulus and the edge iiange 2, parallel with the edges, to allow ot' the head-bands or frame-pieces 3 being let in outside of the rib.`
Thehead-seetion a is secured to the head-bands `3 by screws, which extend through the exterior flange, 2, into them. The rib b tends to support the head-bands, Ywhich provide for the attachment of the ends of the cloth to the reel-head, and it also serves to strengthen the latter. -side of the reel-head with a portion of the thin plate of metal, with an opening through the short sleeve or mouth-piece d, (extending The stationary section b of the head is aat upward therefrom on the outside of the plate,) The plate b has a semicircular ledge, l, extending from a point in the same plane with the center to the opposite side near the edge of the plate. This ledge is on the inside under the opening (Z, and prevents tlIe meal from the feed-spout@ (which eX- tends into the reel' through the open sleeve d) from falling into the joint between the edges of the plates below.' The plate b is laid with its exteriorvedge against the inner dange, a', of section a, and the open ring c is placed over it and screwed to a', forminga groove for b, as shownin views 1,2, 3, ring c b'eing'formed with a rabbet on the inside of the same, as seen in Figs. 2 and 6. When plate b is secured in place, section a (which is fast to the reel) is free to revolve around b. The center of plate b is a wooden block, h, secured therein by screws extending toward the center through a band or collar, i, which extends out laterally from the plate around the hole in which block h is inserted. rIhe object of block h is to lessen the friction upon the journal a, which extends through it, and the block extends outward far enough to prevent the reel-head from touch,- ing the head-boards of the chest. This block IOO is not entirely circular, as its top part is cut off by the spout-mouth or sleeve d, which extends from plate b above it.
e is an inclined spout, which is attached to the outside of the bolting-chest by its wide flanges e,which extend from its sides laterally over the hole formed by sleeve d, covering the open space in the sleeve entirely, thus preventing any dust from the reel being blown out above or below the spout e through the space left in the sleeve for adjustment.
In Fig. 2 the reelhead is shown with a downward adjustment, and an open space is seen in sleeve d belowr the spout e. In Fig. 4 an open space is seen in sleeve cl above the spout e, the reel-head in this figure being shown with an upward adjustment. Spout e is about the same horizontal width in its out` side diameter as the inside of sleeve e, (fitting the latter snugly between its sidesg) but it is much less in its vertical diameter than the sleeve, to allow the latter to be moved up or down over it in the adjustment of the head end of the reel without disturbing the spout.
The feed-spout c extends out through the walls of the chest beyond the frame, and is flanged at the top end to provide for its connection with a down spout or other attachment.
The hole g seen in the head-board of the chest through which the journal n of the reelshaft extends may be vertically oblong, or a box provided with vertical adjustment may be used as abearing for the journal. The block h inthe center of section b has no bearing upon the journal n of the reel-shaft, except from the weight of the fixed section b, this section not being supported by the reel-arms or the frame of the reel.
We claim as our inventionl. In a reel-head, the combination of a ring or annulus, a stationary disk within the same, an opening in said disk, and a feed-spout extending through said opening, with means for closing the latter in adjusting ther reel-head.
.2. In a bolting-chest, the combination of a reel-head with a revoluble annulus, a non-revoluble disk, a sleeve-opening in said disk,
and a feed-spout of less vertical diameter than the opening in said sleeve extending from the head-boards of the chest through the latter, with flanges extending therefrom covering said opening, to prov ide for the adjustment of the reel-head, as set forth.
In a bolting-chest, the combination of a feed-spout, an adjustable reel, and a reel-head, a non-revoluble central circular section provided with a short sleeve extending outward therefrom to adapt it for the insertion of the feed-spout, the opening in said sleeve being of greater vertical diameter than said feed-spout, to allow of the adjustment of the reel-head, irrespective of the latter. 4. In a reel-head, arevoluble section, a, annulus f, projecting inwardly therefrom, and an inner flange, a, in combination with a fixed section,b, sleeve d, opening therein, semicircular ledge l, block h, and ring c with rabbet i', adapted to be bolted to section a over the edge of section b to form a groove for the latter, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a bolting-chest, a feed-spout, e, with upper and lower flanges, e, in combination with the reel-head A,constructed as described, and adapted for adjustment vertically over said spout, as set forth.
' 6. In areel'-head,A,constructed as described, the combination with section b, and flange i, projecting therefrom, of the wooden block h, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination, with the shaft'sn and concentric disk-shaped metal section b, having the projecting ilange c', of the wooden block h, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
8. In a reel-head, the combination of flange 2,rib b', extending at right angles inward therefrom, and head-bands 3, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
