METHOD OF MANUFACTURING CROSSED BOTTOM BAGS WITH TUBULAR SLEEVE INSERTS Filed Feb. 11, 1957 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 "Hum IN VEN TOR. CARL HO/VSE L closed by bending the sleeves.
United States Patent METHOD OF MANUFACTURING CROS SED BOgITOM BAGS WITH TUBULAR SLEEVE IN ERTS Carl Honsel, Herforderstrasse 285, Bielefeld, Germany Filed Feb. 11, 1957, Ser. No. 639,547- a Claims priority, application Germany Feb. 14, 1956 2 Claims. (Cl. 93-35) The present invention relates to crossed bottom bags of the type provided with inserts in the form of tubular sleeves or valves which, upon filling of the bags, are
It is known to provide crossed bottom valve bags by means of machines with a so-called tubular sleeve in the valve for the purpose of closing the crossed bottom bag involves the shortcoming that there is not suificient space available for folding in the tubular sleeve.
It' is an object of the present invention to eliminate these shortcomings. It is an object to provide a method which permits the use of a machine of simple construction which operates faultlessly even at high production rates. I
Accordingly, in accordance with the invention the valve tube is drawn in the usual manner and is advanced by the draw rollers under a knife section. After the completed tubular blank is separated, the side edges of the following endless tubulated band are provided with slots and the band is moved below the drawing members which after the cutting conduct the tubular blank to a gripper cylinder. This gripper cylinder is provided at the lower part with a known gripping device which holds the advancing tubular blank. As soon as the folding blade, which works together with the gripper cylinder, has produced a fold, the valve tube opens and the end is pulled over and laid flat in the manner of a cross bottom. Thus there is formed in the desired manner a folded over part or flap of the valve tube.
Accordingly, the method in accordance with the invention resides in that a valve insert made preferably from an endless tubular band is provided at the forward end along its lateral edges with cuts. This valve insert is then folded over at its cut end in the manner of the crossed bottom of a bag and is inserted in the opened crossed bottom of a bag in such a manner that the folded over flap forms a pocket at the bottom side of the valve insert into which the free end of the valve insert can be placed. The cuts may also be provided in the associated paper web even before the forming of the tubulation for the valve insert.
Further details of the invention and the manner of carrying the same into practice will appear if reference is had to the embodiment illustrated in the drawing in which:
Fig. l is a schematic illustration of a machine for forming and inserting the tubular blank into the crossed bottom which is still open,
Fig. 2 is a plan view in accordance with Fig. 1 indicating the different steps of operation for producing the tubular sleeve,
Fig. 3 illustrates the open crossed bottom with the tubular sleeve inserted,
Fig. 4 is a cross-section along line A-.A of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a detailed view of the arrangement for feeding the crossed bottom bags to and out of the gripper cylinder pair and,
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the areas of glue application to the crossed bottom.
v The paper web 1 is drawn from a paper supply roll which is not illustrated, and a tube is formed in the usual manner by way of the tube forming device 2. The endless tubular band is advanced by the draw rollers 3, 4 to the knife section 5, 6. The lower roller 5 is provided with transverse and longitudinal grooves. The upper roller 6 carries a transverse knife 7 and two longitudinal knives 8 which cooperate with the grooves of the cutting cylinder 5.
Now if a portion of the tubular band is cut off by the transverse knife 7 to form a blank 9, the advancing tubular band 1 continues to advance and is provided by longitudinal'knives 8' with cuts 10. The feeding rollers 11, 12 advance the cut tubular blank 9 to a folding blade cylinder 13 and a folding gripper cylinder 14. The folding blade cylinder 13 is provided with a folding blade 15, and the folding gripper cylinder 14 carries a folding gripper 16. Cylinder 14 is also provided with retaining means 16a which hold the lower end 19 of the valve insert or blank 9. These holding means 16a are preferably formed as a suction device or as'a gripper in a manner known per se. As soon as the tubular blank 9 with the folding line 17 is passed onto the folding gripper cylinder 14 and the folding blade 15 and advanced, the upper flap portion 18 bends upwardly while the lower flap portion 19 is held upon the folding gripper cylinder 14 by the holding means 16a. The tubular blank 9 thus mounted is then advanced by the presser roller 20 to the gripper cylinder 21, while the upper flap portion 18 is bent by guide 19a and rolled tight by the presser roller 20.
The cuts 10 can also be made by cutters provided upon the folding gnipper cylinder 14. Likewise, these longitudinal cuts can be provided even before entrance of the tubular -band 1 upon the tubulation forming device 2.
The gripper cylinder 21 advances the tubular blank 9 with the folded over flap portion 18 into the plane which is indicated at II in Fig. 1. In this plane the cross bottom bag is moved with the crossed bottoms turned up transversely to the feeding arrangement. The gripping cylinder 21 operates together with a counter roller 21a.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 5 the gripping cylinder 21 which rotates counter-clockwise seizes the tubular blank by means of gripper 21b which advances it into the plane I-I where. the cross bottom bag 23' is advanced from left to right.
Before this bag reaches the gripping cylinder 21 the crossed bottom bag 23 is advanced by the pair of rollers 28, 29. Roller 28 which is provided with a glue applying segment 30 is associated with a glue container 31. The roller 32 picks up. glue from glue container 31 and applies it to segment 30.
The segment 30 is arranged in a manner that glue is applied to the turned up crossed bottom as illustrated in Fig. 6, to areas 33, 3'4, 35, 3'6, 37 and 38. When the tubular blank 9 d8 applied to the turned up crossed bottom by means of the gripper cylinder arrangement 21, 21a, 21b glue has been deposited at 37 for the purpose of gluing down the tubulation 9 by means of the turned over flap 18. The glue areas 33, 34, 35, 36 serve for the purpose of effecting the closure of the crossed bottom at the corner flaps 24, 24a after folding over bottom flaps 39, 40 along lines '41, 42, while the gluing surf-ace 38 serves the purpose of gluing the longitudinal seam after the folding of bottom flaps 39 and '40.
The folding of bottom flaps 39 and 40' is effected with means known per se along the path from the gripping cylinder arrangement 21, 21a, 21b to the roller pairs 43, 43a and 44, 44a which latter rollers serve the sole purpose of seating the planes which are now glued to one another after closing of the crossed bottom.
Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the tubular blank 9 is provided upon the turned up bottom 22 of the cross bottom bag 23 against the edge 25 of the corner portion 4 so that the flap portion 19 extendsover the edge 25 of the corner portion 24 into the-bag while the folded over flap 18 of blank 9 extends with its fold line 17 flush with the transverse edge 25 of the corner portion.
In Fig. 4 it can be seen that a pocket 26 is formed by the turned over flap 18. 'The filling of the bag 23 is effected in the known manner through the tubular insert 9 which serves as a valve. After filling of the bag the outer end 27 of the tubular insert 9 is manually placed into pocket 26, thus obtaining tight closure of the valve insert 9.
Having now described my invention with reference to the embodiment illustrated, I do not wish to be limited thereto, but what I desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is set forth in the appended claims. 4
I claim:
