INVENTOR.
TLOMAS R I E NDEAU limited States Patent MULTI-PURPOSE HAIR CURLER Thomas W. Riendeau, Hollywood, Calif., assignor of onetenth to Gadget-Of-The-Month Club, Inc., North Hollywood, Calih, a corporation of California Filed Mar. 3, 1959, Ser. No. 796,904
6 Claims. (Cl. 132-41) This invention relates to hair styling apparatus and more particularly to a multipurpose hair curler.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a multipurpose hair curler which will enable women to stylishly set their hair at home in a simple and efficient manner.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hair curler for professionally styling hair at home which can be used to provide various types of waves and cur-ls with a minimum amount of experience.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a multi-purpose hair curler of the above type that is easy to use, will not injure the hair, and which can be readily manipulated to provide the desired type hair style.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a multipurpose hair curler bearing the above objects in mind Which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, with parts broken away, of a hair curler made in accordance with the present invention in a fully assembled closed position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a cap member forming a part of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a transverse cross sectional View taken along line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of a clamp member forming another part of the present invention;
Figure 6 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 66 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 77 of Figure 5;
Figure 8 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a slide member forming another part of the present invention;
Figure 9 is a right end elevational view of the member shown in Figure 8;
Figure 10 is a side elevational view of a base member forming another part of the present invention;
Figure 11 is a transverse cross sectional 'view taken along line 1111 of Figure 10;
Figure 12 is a left end elevational view of the member shown in Figure 10;
Figure 13 is a right end elevational view of the member shown in Figure 10;
Figure 14 is a bottom plan view of the assembly shown in Figure 1;
Figure 15 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse cross sectional view of certain parts of the base member shown in Figure 10, together with a releasable connecting element forming another part of the present invention;
Figure 16 is a top plan view of a coupling forming an accessory for use With the present invention;
Figure 17 is a left end elevational view of the coupling shown in Figure 16; and
Figure 18 is a top plan view of a plurality of hair curlers made in accordance with the present invention secured in assembled relationship by means of the coupling member shown in Figure 16.
Refer-ring now more in detail to the drawing, a multipurpose hair curler 20 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a base member 22 having guide means in the form of longitudinal grooves 24, 26 that slidably receive longitudinal ribs 28, 30, respectively of a slide member 32 which maintain the parts in assembled relationship. As is clearly shown in Figure 8 of the drawing, the slide member 32 is provided with a tongue 34 at one end that is slidably received through an aperture 36 in one end wall 38 of the base member 22 which also has areces-s 40 for purposes hereinaiter more fully described. This end wall 38 of the base member 22 is also provided with a pair of outwardly extending pintles 42 which are rotatably received within side openings 46 of a substantially hollow semi-cylindrical clamp member 48, as shown in Figures 5 to 7.
Each side edge of the clamp member 48 is provided with a longitudinal series of undulating reentrant portions 50 that serve to cooperate with segmental helical grooves 34 in the slide member 32 to curl or wave the hair during actual use of this apparatus. The opposite end of the clamp member 48 from the pivot openings 46 is provided with a pair of inwardly opening indents 52 that releasably receive a pair of outwardly extending detents 54 on the opposite end wall 56 of the base member 22, such detents 54 releasably securing the clamp member 48 in clamping overlying engagement with the slide member 32. This end of the clamp member 48 is also provided with a pair of outwardly extending pintles 58 that rot-atably engage within aligned openings 60 at opposite sides of a cap member 62, shown in Figures 2 to 4 of the drawing.
This cap member 62 is also of substantially hollow semi-cylindrical configuration and has indents 64 at the one end opposite the pivot openings 60. These indents 64 releasably receive detents 66 integral with the end of the clamp member 48 adjacent to the pivot openings 46.
The operation of this hair curler will now be readily understood. If it is desired to make a finger wave, the clamp member 48 with the cap member 62 snugly carried thereon is rotated about the pintles 42 to an open position, and the :lock of hair is placed over the helical grooves 34 of the slide member 32. The clamp member 48 together with the cap member 62 carried thereby is then moved into closing engagement with the lock of hair, thus forming the finger wave and securing it in place by the engagement of the detents 54 within the indents 52 of the clamp member 48. If it is desired to make a standard wave, the clamp member 48 is permitted to remain in the closed position, and only the cap member 62 is opened by rotating it about its pivotal connection with the pintles 58 on the clamp member, fol lowing which the lock of hair is placed upon the outer surface of the clamp member 48 and the cap member 62 returned to the closed position.
If it is desired to make a series of waves adjacent to each other, a coupling member 68, as shown in Figures 15 to 18, having a plurality of branches or connectors 72 may be used to secure :a plurality of such curlers 20 in spaced apart parallel relationship. Each such branch 72 is provided with a bulbous portion 74 that is releasably received within the recess 40 in each one of the lcurler end walls 38, thus releasably locking the group Patented Sept. 20, 1960 i 3 of curlers together. Of course, various other combinaations of curls, waves, and the like may be readily fashioned from the use of this apparatus, in order to suit a particular hairstyle or fashion. Since the pants are preferably constructed from molded plastic material, they are sufficiently resilient to accommodate the various clamping and pivotal movements.
While various changes may be made in the detail 'construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1.' A multi-purpose hair'cu-rler comprising, in com- 7 bina'tion, a slide member including a substantially hollow semi-cylindrical element having a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs, a base member of substantially segmental cylindrical shape having a plurality of longitudinal grooves slidably receiving said longitudinally extending ri'bs of said slide member th'erewithin, a wavefonming clamp member pivotally supported at one end upon one end of said base member for selective clampi-ng movement of said slide member, and a cap member pivotally supported atone end upon the opposite end of said clamp member for selective closing movement upon said clamp member.
2. The combination according to claim '1, wherein the exterior of said slide member defines a plurality of helical groove segments.
ber therewithin.
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said hollow semi-cylind1ical clamp member includes a pair of side edges defining a plurality of undulating reentnant portions for forming waves with said helical 'groove segments.
5. The combination according to claim 4, wherein said base member further includes end walls at opposite ends, one of said end walls defining an aperture, and said slide member having a longitudinally outwardly extending tongue slidably received within said aperture of said one base end Wall.
6. l -he combination according to claim 5, further comprising detents releasably securing said wave forming clamp member in closing engagement over said slide, and detents releasably securing said cap member in closingengagement over said clamp member.
