Description
(NO'MQdGL) W. HEWITT. WIRE BALE TIE. No. 294,386. Patented Mar. 4,1884.
WITNl ESSES: I INVENTOR NITED STATES] PATENT OF ICE.
WILLIAM HEWVITT, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE TRENTON IRON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WIRE BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,386, dated March 4, 1884:.
Application filed December 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it ina concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HEWITT, of Trenton, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire Bale-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of bale-ties in which the band proper is composed of wire, as opposed to being composed of a strap of sheet metal, in which, also, a link, plate, or buckle, as it is variously termed, is employed as a device for fastening or connecting the extremities of the wire band.
The object of my invention is the production of a cheap and simple baletie, and one in which tightening ofthe bale-band is readily effected.
In the accompanying drawings I have represented a wire bale-band conveniently embodying my improvements, Figure 1 indicating the application of the looped end of the wire band to the buckle, Figs. 2 and 5 representing in plan view, Fig. 3 in perspec-' tive, and Fig. 4 in longitudinal section, the method of securing the free end of the wire band to the buckle, so as to effect the fasten ing of the band proper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the plate, link, or buckle, the same being conveniently of elliptical outline and punched, sheared, or otherwise formed, preferably from sheet metal, to the shape and size required. Near one of its ends the plate is provided with a hole, a, while correspondingly located with respect to its other end is a second hole or opening, I), slotted out to the edge of the plate in the manner represented'in the drawings, and so as to, in effect, form one end of the plateinto ahook, which is, for convenience, in the drawings designated by the letter 0.
B represents one of the ends of the wire band, which is twisted to form a loop, d,
adapted to be engaged within the slotted hole of the plate, or, to use an equally applicable expression, about the hook formed by said slotted hole. Theloop can be made large enough to permit of the ready applicationof the wire band to the plate, or can be twisted up closely with respect to the hook,'so as to attach the buckle to the banda condition furthered by shaping and proportioning the hooked extremity of the plate, substantially in the man ner represented in Fig. 5, and so that the band,
when twisted up, cannot escape from said plate. 5 5
V 0 represents the free or unlooped extremity of the wire band, which is engaged with the buckle by being first threaded through the hole a, and thence carried laterally through the slot 2), so that it may find a hearing within or with respect to said slotted hole, substantially in the manner represented in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings. The free end of the wire band may of course be entered from either side of the plate through the hole a, and then locked in the slotted hole by being entered therein from the side of the plate opposite that from which it entered the hole a. The kinks or bends formed in the wire band by its threading and introduction through the holes in the plate are, under the strain of the bales, such as to force the wire to come to abearing with re spect to both holes in the plate,'so that the free end of the wire is fixedly held in the buckle with a grip fully equal to the tensile.75 strength of the wire band itself. The band can of course be readily tightened by seizing the free end of the wire projecting beyond the slotted hole and lifting it from out its seat therein, by then tightening or drawing up the wire through the hole a in the plate, and by then replacing the free end in the slotted hole. All strains upon the wire band caused, for instance, by the expansion of a compressed bale tend simply to tighten thefree end of .the wire 8 5 with respect to its seats in the plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- As an improvement in wire bale-bands, a
plate provided with a hole at one extremity o WM. HEWVITT.
In presence. of
CONRAD HEWITT, G. L. W HI'IEHEAD.
