6 Claims. (Cl. 287- 58) This invention relates to telescoping members with means for locking same in longitudinally adjusted positions.
.An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described, comprising a pair of telescoping tubes, one of the tubes being formed with an integral depressed portion receiving a locking pin adapted to lock the tubes in longitudinally adjusted positions upon rotating one tube relative to the other in one direction.
A further object of this invention is to provide in an article of the character described, means for limiting longitudinal movement'of one tube relative to the other in oppositedirections. l
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a car-wash dispenser handle adjustable to various lengths and lockable in adjusted position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a strong, 7
rugged, and durable device of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive'to manufacture, easy to assemble and manipulatqand which shall yet be smooth and positive in operation, and practical and eflicient toa highdegree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists inthe features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a device embodying the invention, here shown for the purpose of illustration, in the form of a car wash handle. The device 10 comprises an elongated outer tube 11 which may be made of metal. Said tube comprises an elongated tubular portion 12 of uniform cross-section. At one end of portion 12 is an annular shoulder 13 from which extends a tubular end portion 14 of smaller diameter than portion 12. At its opposite end, the tubular portion 12 is formed with an outwardly flared portion 15 in which may be fixed a valve member 16 in the form of a die-casting. Member 16 may have a cylindrical skirted portion 17 from which extends a transverse wall 18 formed with a pair of valve openings 19.
Surrounding the flared end of the tube portion 12 and the portion adjacent thereto, is a coupler member 19a having portion 20 surrounding the flared portion of the tube 12 and the portion adjacent thereto. Extending from portion 20 is an internally threaded skirted portion amass Patented June 28, 1960 "ice 21 surrounding the transverse wall 18. A rotary washer 23 may be fitted within" the coupler portion 21, against the transverse wall 18, said washer being formed with openings 24 which may register with the openings 19. The coupler member 19a and the inner fitting 16 are firmly fixed to one end of the tubular portion 12. The tubular portion 12 is, furthermore, formed with an opening 30, for thepurpose hereinafter appearing; and with an outwardly projecting stop dimple 31. Slidably mounted on, and telescoping with, tubular portion 12 is a casing 33 formed with an inner chamber 34 for liquid soap. At the ends of the casing 33 are end walls 36 and 37 carrying O-rings 36a and 37a, respectively, engaging the tubular portion 12. The end wall 37 also carries a cylindrical sleeve 38 adapted to close the opening 30 in one longitudinal position of the casing 33, so that only water may pass through the tube 11. Upon sliding the casing 33 to the right, looking at Fig. 1 to the stop dimple 31, the opening 30 is uncovered so that passage of water through the tube 11 will draw liquid soap into the water stream.
Telescoped within the tube 11 is an inner tube 40 which may also be made of metal. The inner tube 40 comprises a tubular portion 41 of uniform cross-section having a sliding fit within the tubular portion 14 of the tube 11. At the outer end of tubular portion 41 is a screw-threaded portion 42 which may be screwed to a brush-head of a car washer or the like article. Adjacent the screw-threaded portion 42, said tubular portion 41 is formed with anoutwardly projecting dimple 43, adapted to contact the end i edge 14a of the tubular portion 14, to limit movement of tube relative to tube-11 in one direction. Said tube 40 is formed adjacent its opposite end with a tubular portion 44 having a sliding fit within the tubular portion 12.. Adjacent the portion .44 is an annular depressed integral portion 45 forming a groove receiving anQ-ring 46 interposed between the tubular portion12 and the bottom of the groove portion 45. j
On the opposite side of the groove portion 45 is atubu lar portion 47 having the same outer diameter as portion 44. Extending from portion 47 of the tube 40 is a portion 48 having the same outer diameter as the portion 41 of said tube. Extending from portion 48 is portion 49 having the same outer diameter as portions 44 and 47. The portion 48 may have a length about three or four times that of each of the portions 44, 47, or 49. Said portion 48 is formed with an integral elongated depression 50'. The depression 50 is of less length than said portion 48 forming end walls 51 for said depression. At the bottom of the depression 50 is a wall 52. Said wall 52 comprises a central portion 53 and curved end portions 54 and 55 connecting portion 52 with wall 48. The wall portion 52 is cam-like and not circular. Thus, the groove 50 is deeper at one end than at the other end, the depth of said depression varying angularly. The whole length of the depression 50 may be about 120. Portion 52 gradually merges by curved portions with the portions 54, 55 and 51, and said portion 51 merges by means of curved corner 51a with wall portion 48.
Within the depression 50 is a longitudinal locking roller pin 60, of less length than the longitudinal distance between the shoulders 51. The diameter of the locking pin is less than the radial depth of the depression 50 at one end, but greater than the radial depth of the depression 50 at the other end (including the clearance between the wall 48 and the tubular portion 12). Thus, when the locking pin 60 is at one end of the depression 50, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, tube 40 may be moved longitudinally relative to tube 11 to increase or decrease the overall length of the device 10.'
