' ATTACHMENT FOR BENCH WORK HOLDER Filed Dec. 26, 1956 INVENTOR. THOMAS W. BEYEW ATTORNEY United States Patent 2,941,796 ATTACHMENT FOR BENCH WORK HOLDER Thomas W. Beyer, 17 Francis St, San Rafael, Calif. Filed Dec. 26, 1956, Ser. No. 630,507 1 Claim. (Cl. 269-434) This invention is an improvement of an attachment to the type of work holders described in my co-pending application Serial No. 560,932, filed January 24, 1956 on work holders, now abandoned.
In the handling of cylinder heads, particularly cylinder heads on so called V type engines, the difiiculty is in the awkward arrangement for removal of valve guides or bushings or the grinding of valve seats or other work to be performed on such heads, because in so handling and Working with the heads on the usual bench the heads are either distorted or nicked or otherwise damaged. Accuracy of the work is also dangered because of the lack of accurate and solid support of the head and the convenient position for working. In order to hold such cylinder heads in position on my work holder described in my said co-pending application, I provide an attachment the object of which is for quickly engaging the cylinder head or both cylinder heads of a V type engine and allow the adjustment of the same over the bench or off the bench in convenient positions for the workman.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the following specification, and as defined in the following claim; hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said device and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed descrip: tion, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for the illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my cylinder head holder attached to my work holder.
Fig. 2 is a side view of my device showing one of the cylinder heads held over the bench, the other hanging vertically.
Fig. 3 is a front view of my device with the upper holder arms adjusted over the bench.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings herein I show my novel device attached to a horizontal work holder of the type shown in Fig. 1 of my said co-pending application. In this case, a generally horizontal shaft 6 is supported in bearing brackets 7 on a base plate 8 secured by bolts 9 to a bench 11. The shaft 6 extends beyond the edge 10 of the bench so as to allow manipulation of the supporting bracket and the work.
In my attachment for such bench holder I provide a sleeve 12 which is adapted to be slipped over the outer end of the shaft 6 and to be secured thereon in any suitable manner such as by setscrew 13. On the outer end of the sleeve 12 is provided a transverse sleeve 14 of generally rectangular cross-section to slidably retain therein a support bar 16 also of rectangular cross-section.
On the ends of the support bar 16 are slidable the rectangular hubs 17 of bracket plates 18 respectively. Each bracket plate 18 is generally semi-circular.
The hubs 17 and the square support bar 16 respectively can be supported in adjusted position relatively to one another and to the transverse set screws 19.
Along the straight or diametrical edge 20 of each semicircular plate 13 and on each side of the hub 17 are provided a pair of holes 21. An adjustable bracket arm 23 is held in position by a pivot bolt 24 extended through the hole 21 nearer to the hub 17. A setting pin 26 extends through the other hole 21 and also through an aligned hole 27 in the adjacent bracket arm 23 to hold the bracket arm 23 in extended position. The setting pin 26 is provided with a spring pressed ball catch 28 to prevent accidental removal through the said holes 21 and 27.
The outer end of each bracket arm 23 is provided with a threaded hole 29 into which is threadedly secured a rod 31. This rod 31 is adapted to be extended through any of the usual holes 32 of a cylinder head 33. A wing nut 34 threaded on the outer end of rod 31 fastens the cylinder head 33 in position so that the cylinder head 33 is clamped between the wing nuts 34 and the bracket arms 23. The bracket arms 23 are of suflicient length to support the average cylinder head 33 thereon with freedom of swinging with the bracket arm 23 relatively to the support bar 16.
In order to raise or move the cylinder head 33 to a convenient position the setting pin 26 is removed from the adjacent bracket arm 23 on the side on which the cylinder 33 has to be supported and then the parallel bracket arms 23 with the head 33 are swung to the adjusted position, either over the bench or off the bench. By turning the shaft 6 to the respective adjusted position work can be conveniently performed on the head. By turning the device all around so that the initially lowered head is raised to the top, then the latter can be turned either over the bench or off the bench to any convenient position for the work to be performed thereon.
This device is extremely simple, but it is very important because it avoids injury to the cylinder head which must be Worked precisely, as Well as avoids injury to the workman who works on the same, yet permits convenient placing and holding of the cylinder head in position for any particular operation to be performed on the same in the usual repair or assembly.
I claim:
A cylinder head holder for a bench work holder comprising a bar, rotatable means to removably support the bar on said bench work holder, spaced bracket plates adjustable longitudinally on said bar at right angles to the planes of said plates, each bracket plate having a pair of holes therethrough parallel with said bar, a bracket arm pivoted in one of said holes on said bracket plates, removable means to engage each bracket arm through the other of said holes to hold the arm in extended position or to permit its pivoting at will, and an element on the free end of each bracket arm engageable with a hole in a cylinder head for holding the cylinder head in position on said bracket arm, said rotatable support means including a sleeve fitting on an element of the bench holder, a transverse sleeve on the first sleeve having a rectangular bore therethrough, and said bar being rectangular and slidable through the transverse sleeve, and a rectangular hub on each bracket plate slidably adjustable on said rectangular bar.
