CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Oct. 27, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. Leo [/arZW/ck BY United States Patent CIGARETTE HOLDER Leo L, mimics, s Alwyn Road, De Witt, NIY. --Filed Oct. 27, 1955, Seri No. 543,134 a 3 Claims. (21. 131-251 This invention relates to cigarette holders of the type usually attached to an ash tray or the like to temporarily hold a burning cigarette, and has as an object to provide a cigarette holder including a stationary member and a movable member which, upon contact by a cigarette, is moved into position to hold and retain the cigarette in the fixed member.
The invention has as a further object to provide a cigarette holder composed of three pieces or parts which are susceptible of being economically moulded from glass, plastic material, metal, etc., and which may be quickly and conveniently disassembled for cleaning.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cigarette holder mounted in an ash tray embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the holder and the ash tray shown in Fig. 1, the ash tray having a part broken away and a part in section.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 33, Figure 1 of the holder, the ash tray being omitted.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 44, Figure 3 of the holder.
The holder consists of a vertically disposed body member having spaced apart side walls 11 connected at their vertical ends by body portions 12. An intermediate member 13 is positioned between the side walls 11 and is mounted for movement in a plane parallel thereto.
The walls 11 are formed with aligned cigarette receiving notches 14 having sides 15, 16, the notches being substantially of U formation; The intermediate member 13 is also formed with a notch or recess 17 extending inwardly from its periphery and having a side 18 engageable by a cigarette as the same is positioned in the holder the recess 17 is so arranged in the intermediate member that the outer end portion 20 of the concave side 19 projects over the cigarette positioned in the notch 14 when the intermediate member is rotated in a clock-wise direction, Figure 3.
The intermediate member 13 is in the form of a circular disk, rotatably supported in a concavity 22 formed in the upwardly extending portion 23 of a base 24.
The intermediate member 13 is normally positioned with the notch 17 therein partially out of registration with the notches 14 in side walls 11, so that the side 18 of the recess 17 is engageable by a cigarette 26 when it is inserted in the holder. This movement of the cigarette into engagement with the side 18 of the recess effects a clockwise rotation, Figure 3, of the intermediate member 13, this action taking place upon movement of the cigarette downwardly into the notches 14 of the side wall members. This results in moving the intermediate member to bring the recess 17 thereof in registration with the notches 14, and the projection 20 into overlying relation with the cigarette, as shown in Figure 2, and thereby retaining it in the holder.
Patented June .14, 1960 Stop means is provided to limit movement of the inter.- mediate member 13 relative to the body. Thisstop means may consist of. a projection 28 extending upwardly from or fixedly mounted-in the concavity 22 of the upstandi'ng base portion 23. The disk 13 is formed on its periphery with an arcuate notch 29, the end walls of the notch 29 being located for engagement with the projection 28 to effect proper positioning .of the intermediate member 13. The base 24 may be fixedly mounted on the bottom wall 30 of an ash tray 31. The body is detachably secured to the base, as by frictional engagement with the upstanding portion 23, whereby the holder may be conveniently disassembled for the purpose of cleaning the parts thereof. The upper ends of the body portions 12 are curved inwardly to provide means for retaining the disk in the concavity 22.
What I claim is:
l. A cigarette holder comprising a base having an upstanding portion formed with a concavity, a body member detachably mounted on said base and having a pair of spaced apart side wall portions enclosing the upstanding portion of the base and extending thereabove, a disk mounted intermediate said side walls for rotation in said concavity, said side walls being formed with aligned cigarette receiving notches extending inwardly from their top edges, and said disk being formed with a cigarette receiving recess extending inwardly from the periphery thereof, stop means cooperable with said disk to position the same with the recess therein partially out of registration with the notches in the side walls of the body and with a side of the recess in said disk positioned intermediate the sides of the notches in the body walls, said disc having a portion located within the radially outer portion of the recess which projects over a cigarette positioned in the recess, said disk being rotatable upon insertion of a cigarette in said notches to move the recess of the disk into registration with the notches in said side walls and with said projection overlying the cigarette.
2. A cigarette holder comprising a body having a pair of spaced apart side walls, a disk journalled for rotation between said side walls, said side walls having edge portions substantially coextensive with a peripheral portion of said disk, said edge portions of said side walls being formed with aligned cigarette receiving notches, said peripheral portion of said disk being formed with a cigarette receiving recess, stop means adapted to limit rotation of said disk in one direction with a first side of the recess therein positioned intermediate the sides of the notches in said side walls, whereby said first side of said recess is engaged by a cigarette upon insertion of the same into the holder to thereby eifect rotation of the disk to bring said recess in full registration with said notches, said disk being formed with a portion located within the radially outer portion of the recess and which projects towards said first side of the recess for overlying the cigarette and retaining the same in the holder as said recess is moved into registration with said notches.
3. A cigarette holder comprising a base having an upstanding portion formed with a concavity in its top surface, a boxlike body member detachably mounted on said base and having a pair of spaced apart side walls and connecting end walls, the walls of said body member enclosing the upstanding portion of the base and extending above said concavity, a disk mounted in said box member for rotation in said concavity, the connecting end walls of said box member extending upwardly beyond the axis of said disk and being curved to overlie a portion of the peripheral surface of said disk to retain the same for rotation in said concavity, said side walls being formed with aligned cigarette receiving notches located in their top edges and said top edges extending substantially coextenportion'ofthe' disk being formed with a cigarette receiving reoess, said disk being-normally positioned with a ive with a p'ribhe'ral portion of said disk, said perifihral the oigzifettemd retaining the same in the holder upon r0} tationofthe gii sk to bring thg rgge ss-thcrein in registrai'e Refe ron ces Cite d in'the file of oatont "UNITED STATES PATENTS Patton M31. 25, 1884 Sandidge Feb. 17,1925 Marihart Q, June 23, 1936 Blunt Jan. 26, 1937 July 25, 1939 'Oct. 6, 1942
