MACHINE FOR MILLING OFF THE HUB ENDS OF WHEEL-SPOK ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,934, dated February 19, 1884.

To a whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BARNET, of Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center- Drilling Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure l is atop view of the machine, part of the upper portion of which is broken away, showingtherimofawheel andtwo spokes thereof adj ustedin position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the machine, taken in the plane indicated by dotted line 00 00 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a'sectional view of the loaded hand-lever and the upper part of the machine.
This invention relates to machinery for centering metal wheels having spokes fixed in their rims, but without hubs, and cutting off the inner ends of the spokes true, so that when the hubs are applied the wheel will be round and true,- and it consists in certain novel devices for centering the rims of, wheels and trimming the inner ends of the spokes, which will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A. designates the solid bed-plate of the machine, from which rise columns B, supporting on their upper ends a horizontal top plate, 0. These parts are rigidly secured together, and constitute a substantial supporting frame. From the center of the bed-plate A, and rigidly secured to it, rises a pillar, D, on top of which is a flange, E, on which is secured the chuckingtable or faceplate F, and also the lever-ring G,wl1ich latter is to a limited extent circularly movable. The chuck is composed of the said face-plate F, havinga suitablenum ber of slots, H, through it, in which work the extensions of movable slides I, and on which are fastened,with set-screws, at equal distances from the center of the machine, angle-jaws J, the slides I of which are connected to a leverring, G, under the table F, by means of links K.

M, by means of t On the under side of the top plate, 0, is bolted a sleeve, P, having a screw-thread on its outer surface,on which turns the nut-hub of a handwheel, Q. On the lower end of the sleeve P a pressurefoot, R, is fitted, having a flange, 1', at its lower end, the upper end being hung to the hub of the hand-wheel Q, so that when this wheel is revolved the pressure-foot can be moved either up or down. There is an inner sleeve, S, (with a collar,) resting on top of plate Oand passing through the outer sleeve, 1?, and on the upper end of this inner sleeve is keyed a bevel spur-wheel, T, which engages with and is driven by a pinion, U, on a shaft, U, having its bearings on top of the plate 0, as shown in Fig. 2. The sleeve S is bored out to receive a vertically-movable spindle, V, which is slotted to receive a feather or key, and on this rod a loose collar with trunnions W WV is held in place by means of slip-collars X X. On the trunnions W WV is the yoke Y, to which is attached the balanced lever Z, connected by a link, a, to the plate 0. The vertically-movable spindle V is bored out at its lower end to receive suitable drills, reamers, or'other tools. On the tableFis fastened a center bed or chuck, b, for supporting the inner ends of the spokes, as shown in Fig. 2.
Operation: A tire with spokes fastened in it is adjusted in the machine by resting the tire on the chuck-jaws J, the inner ends of the spokes or arms resting on the center bed, 12. The spokes are then clamped fast on said bed by screwing down the pressure-foot R, after which the tire or rim of the wheel is strained outward by applying power to thelever M. It has been above described that the slides I, having the angle-jaws J, are connected by links K to the lever-ring G. This ring G is circularly movable by vibrating the arm L, and the slides are radially adjusted by reason of the links assuming angles with respect to the length of their respective slides; or, in other words, the inner ends of the said links move with the ring G. The spindle V, with a suitable tool attached to it, is then brought down by hand-lever Z, cutting off the inner ends of the spokes to equal lengths, so that when the hub or center is applied the wheel will be round and perfectly true.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a machine for truing wheels before ap plying the hubs the combination of a concen trio series of radial tire-distending chucks, a center-block and spoke-clamp, and a drill cutter or reamer adapted for trimming the inner ends of spokes, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for balancedlever Z, for giving vertical movement to the spindle, the sleeve S, and the drivingwheels for rotating the spindle, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
4. The combination of the face-plate, the central spoke-rest, the perforated slides T, and the adjustable chuck-jaws on said slides, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.-
