A.. RENSSELAER SPROUT, OF PICTURE ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FioR BENDING AND SCORING Hoops.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 293,917, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed July 7, 1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern: I
Be itknown that I, A. RENssELAER SPRoU'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Picture Rocks, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending and Scoring Hoops, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My inventionrelates to a machine for scoring and bending wood hoops Vsuch as are used for barrels, kegs, and the like.
lThe construction and the operation of the machine will first be described, and the invention then designated in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of all the parts except the wheels, which latter are'not sectioned.
The letters A and A designate the side standards, which are connected together at the upper ends by a cross-bar, B. A shaft, G, has bearing in each standard. A scoringand a gear-wheel, d, on the shaft, between its bearings. rIhe scoring-wheel has on its face teeth e, having sharp edges, three rows of these teeth occupying the width of the-face, leaving a space, f, between each row. The driveshaft G also has bearing .in the standards, and carries a pinion, h, which meshes with the gear-wheel d. A pulley, G', is to re ceive a belt for imparting motion to the machine. A anged wheel, I, having a smooth face, is on the end of a shaft, I', which is mounted in a pivoted arm, I2. 'Ihe iianged smooth-faced wheel is directly above the scoring-wheel, and normally its smooth face may be in contact with the teeth ofthe scoringwheel. One endof the arm I2 is'pivoted at la to the standard A', and the other end projects through a vertical slot, Z, in the standard A. By this construction the wheel I may rotate, and may rise and fall, because its shaft is carried on a pivoted arm.
The particular construction here shown may be varied, and yet produce the same result.
end of the pivoted arm and the upper crossbar, B, and serves to depress the arm,.and thereby cause the wheel to exert a pressure.
Other means than a spring to give the desired pressure.
On the outer side of the standard A a' L curved bending-plate, N, is attached. y It curves about the rear side of the scoringwheel, and its upper end has position just abovethe top of the scoring-wheel. A guide bracket or plate, p, is attached to the standard at the front side and on a plane even may be employed with the top of the scoring-wheel, and serves to directa straight hoop-splint between the scoring and anged pressure-wheel, as indicated by broken lines at q in Fig. 1.
The hoop-splints to be operated upon by this machine may be made from timber ofy any size. They are nrst properly shaped, and then steamed, and while hot are passed through this-machin e-that is, passed endwise between the scoring-wheel and anged wheel-and are formed circular bythe curved bending-plate. The scoring-wheel teeth have sharp edges, which cut crosswise of the wood iibers of the hoop, and also compress or in some measure upset77 the said cut ends ofthe bers. This process has the effect to crimp or shorten one face or side ofthe splint, which face becomes the understood that in such case the thin edge of the hoop-splint will be next to theflange of the wheel.
Having described my invention, I claim-. l. In' a machine for bending hoops, the combination of a scoring-wheel, C', provided with cutting-teeth, a smooth wheel, I, adjoining the scoring wheel, means to cause the smooth wheel to press against the scoring-wheel, a guide-bracket, p, at the front side of the scoring-wheel, and a bending-plate, N, which curves about the rear side of the scoringwheel, as set forth. v
2. In a machine for bending hoops, the combination of a scoring-wheel, C', provided with cutting-teeth, a shaft, I', having one end piv IOO oted, whereby the other end may have play o1' movement, :t smooth wheel, I, on the movable end and adjoining` the seo1ing-whee1, means to enuse the smooth Wheel to press against the 5 scoring-Wheel, and means at the rear side of the scoring-wheel to bend the hoop, as set forth.
3. In a machine for bending hoops, the oombinntion of :t scoring-wheel, G, provided with Io Cutting-teeth, an arm, I2, pivoted at one end,
n shaft, I, mounted on said arm, :L smooth wheel, I, on the movable end of the shaft, and means to cause the smooth Wheel to press against the seoring-whee1, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
A. RENSSELAER SIROUT. Titnessesz ALBERT H. TARBELL, J. J. CROCKER.
