United States Patent ANCHOR RETAINER AND LOCK Charles T. Scanlin, 5008 Ward, Houston, Tex. Filed June 27, 1955, Ser. No. 518,220
2 Claims. (Cl. 114-210) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an anchor holder and lock.
It is an object of this invention to provide a means for holding an anchor of a boat while the boat is in motion or during such time as the anchor is not being employed for the purpose of anchoring the boat.
It is another object of the invention to provide a means for holding the anchor of a boat off of the deck of the boat where it will not mar the finish of the deck and where it may be quickly and easily released for anchor ing purposes.
It is still another object of the invention to provide an anchor holding and locking means that will enable a user to raise and lower the anchor from any desired preselected position in the boat, eliminating the necessity of v changing positions in the boat for such purpose.
In small boats, it is customary to deposit the anchor in the boat, under foot, when not employed in anchoring the boat, this places a wet and often muddy, large and cumbersome piece of equipment on the floor of the boat, bringing mud and water into the boat and creating a hazard in the boat, capable of causing accidents. Where a small boat is being operated by one passenger, the situation becomes doubly dangerous, particularly in an outboard motor boat, the anchor rope being at the front end of the boat and the motor and operator at the rear. It is an object of this invention to provide a means for guiding the anchor into a retainer at the front of the boat and an anchor rope lock to be located at a preselected position in the boat convenient to the operator, enabling the operator to raise and lower the anchor from his preselected position in the boat.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a novel anchor rope locking device for releasably securing the anchor rope.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction, operation, and arrangement of parts more particularly defined in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is an elevational view, showing the device mounted on a boat.
Figure 2 is a side elevational sectional view showing the device in anchor lowered position.
Figure 3 is a side elevational sectional view showing the device in anchor raised and locked position.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 1, 1 designate the side members of the framework, which may be formed of any suitable rigid material, such as sheet metal, and which may be equipped with the marginal flanges 2, 2 for securing the device to the deck of a boat by means of suitable retainers, such as the screws 4, 4. A bottom plate 5 may be mounted between the members 1, 1 by welding, or the like, for re- Patented May 31, 1960 inforcement, and a back plate 6 is suitably secured to the side members or formed integrally'therewith, and is provided with a line port 7. If desired this port 7 may be formed in the bottom plate 5, to permit the line to run beneath the deck of the boat. A rear pulley 8-is rotatably mounted between the side members 1, 1. The side members 1, 1 may be provided with side ports, as 9, 9, and the bottom plate 5 with the line securing 'cleat 10.
A tubular anchor shank housing 11, is pivotally mounted in the side members 1, 1, by means of the axle 12. .The axle 12 is mounted in the angle slot 13 in the side members 1, 1. The housing 11 has the wings 14, 14, through which the axle 12 extends, and which supports the pivotally mounted pulley 15.
Mounted behind the side members 1, 1, on the boat at any desired location, is the line lock, consisting of the side members 16, 16, bottom plate 17 and pivotally mounted, tubular line sleeve 18. The sleeve 18 has a pair of downwardly extending bracket members 19, 19. Pivotally mounted in said bracket members is the latch member 20, having means 22 for constantly urging same into contact with a line, as 21, in the sleeve 18, and having a rearwardly projecting portion thereof slotted, as at 23. A pin 24 is mounted between the side members 16, 16, and positioned to be received by the slot 23. The end of the sleeve 18 has its lower surface formed to receive the stop 25, which is pivotally mounted in the side members 16, 16. Several positions may be provided for by forming a block 26 having a series of transverse grooves.
If desired, the device may be mounted on a boat, as 27, the side members 1, 1 being at the bow of the boat, and the anchor line, as 21, extending through the sleeve 18 and the housing 11. The housing 11 is open at both ends and longitudinally at the back except for the area beneath wings 14. When the anchor is lowered into the water, the housing 11 rocks forwardly on the axle 12 and the momentum of the anchor causes the file 12 to move into the forwardmost position in the slot 13 extending the anchor and line away from the boat. The line 21 rides on the pulleys 15, 8 and the stop 25 is moved out of contact with the block 26 and the sleeve 18 is manually moved downwardly on its pivot, causing the pin 24 to ride in the slot 23, rocking the latch 20 downwardly out of contact with the line 21. When it is desired to again lock the line against movement, the sleeve 18 is released, permitting it to move upwardly, and the latch 20 to move back into contact therewith, locking the line in the sleeve 18. Whenit is desired to raise the anchor, the line is drawn through the sleeve 18 and over the pullies 8, 15 until the shank of the anchor 27 enters the housing 11, and the wings 14 will then move rearwardly and as the housing 11 rocks rearwardly, will drop into the lowermost position of the slot 13 and the housing 11 will rest between the side members-1, 1. The stop 25 may then be moved into locking position in one of the grooves in the block 26, and the boat may travel at any desired speed without danger of the anchor bumping the sides or deck of the boat. The hook of the anchor will be extended forwardly, so that when it is desired to again lower the anchor, the lock may be released, and the weight of the hook will cause the anchor to drop.
While the foregoing is considered a preferred form of the invention, it is by way of illustration only, the broad principle of the invention being defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device for retaining an anchor on a boat, a rigid framework having a pair of elongated parallel side members secured longitudinally on the deck and at one end of a boat, an anchor shank receiving member having a tubular chamber adapted to extend outwardly from the boat and having wings pivotally mounted between the said side members, means for causing said anchor shank reeciving member to move forwardly and rearwardly with relation to the deck of the boat comprising aligned angle slots in said parallel side members, a pin extending trans versely through said wings and mounted in said slot and movable rearwardly and downwardly when the-anchor is mounted in said anchor shank receiving member and movable upwardly and forwardly when said anchor is released and a line receiving pulley rotatably mounted between said wings.
2. In a device for retaining an anchor on a boat, a rigid framework having a' pair of parallel side members secured to one end of a boat, a pulley between said side members adjacent one end thereof, an anchor shank receiving member adjacent the other end thereof having an axle mounted in a substantially horizontal angle slot and a tubular chamber movable into a vertical position and extending outwardly :from the boat when in one position and movable rearwardly and into a horizontal position over the boat when in another position.
