BUBVELL J. OURBY, OF HUNTSVILLF, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-SIXTH TO JOHN H. BENNOKER, OF SAME PLACE.
FRUIT-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,635, dated February 19, 1884. Application tiled Novemhcr'Sll, 1883. (No model.)
it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings `and to the letters and gures oi' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in fruit-presses, designed for use in making cider, wine, 81e.; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed'.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of a cider or wine press embodyingmy improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 4t is a perspective view of a slotted board or plate that supports the press-tub. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the concaved follower with guiderollers.
Like lettersdesignate like parts.
The frame of the press consists of the sills A A, uprights B B, and cross-pieces C G. A base-plate, D, is supported by the sills A A,
and may also rest on additional supports' c a, if required.
To this base-plate, or its supports a, a, are pivoted the main levers E E, each of which is provided with an arm or lug, b, to which is pivoted one end of a short lever, F, the other end of which is pivotedto a lug, e, on the under side of the follower or sliding plate G.` This follower or plate G is arranged between the uprights B B, and is provided at each corner with a guide, H, that carries rollers d d, which bear on the uprights, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, and serve to keep the follower-plate in a true horizontal position while the press is in operation. The follower-plate G is preferably rectangular in form, and is provided with a coneaved upper surface that is formed with radial grooves e e,
as shown in Fig. 5. At or near the center of this concaved follower is au opening, f, for the escape of juices, through aspout or tube, g, to a tub or receiver, I, that is placed upon the base-plate D at the lower part of the press. The upper surface of the follower G, at the outer termination of the grooves e, is countersunk or rabbeted, as shown ath, for the reception of a slotted plate, K, Fig. 4, upon which rests the press-tubmL, the bottom of which is perforated for the passage of juice, which also passes through the slots 7c k of the plate K into the concaved surface of the follower G, being there collected by the grooves e e, and passed through the openingf and tube g into the receiver I beneath. A piston or press-plate, M. is suspended rigidly by a rod or stem, N, from across-beam, P, at the upper part ofthe ma chine. This piston or plate M corresponds in form and diameter with the tub L, which it fits so as lto -readily enter the same and press the fruit when the tub is raised by the follower G and levers E F.
Supported in bearings m m upon the crosspieces G C, is a shaft or drum, Q, around which is wound a rope, p, that is also passed over pulleys R R, carried by the upper ends of the levers E E. The shaft or drum Q is rotated by a crank-wheel, T, or other suitable means, so as to draw the upper ends of the levers E E together,'thereby throwing the levers F F into avertical position, and so raising the follower G and tub Luntil the piston M enters the latter a sufficient distance to press the fruit contained therein.- Apawl, s, and ratchet tare provided, to arrest the rotation of the drum Q, and thereby hold the follower G up to any desired degree of pressure.
In order to provide a convenient means of grinding, crushing, or cutting the fruit, if necessary, before pressing, a platform, U, is arranged at one side of the press-frame, at about the norrnaA height of the follower G, as shown in' Fig. 3. Upon this platform is arranged a tub or receptacle,-V, for receiving lthe ground or cut fruit from a grinding-mill,
fruit can thus be readily ground and passed into the tub V, which, when filled, can be removed and another substituted, while the contents of the preceding one are emptied int-o the press-tub L, for pressing, as before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a fruit-press, the concaved follower or plate G, substantially as described.
2. In a fruit-press, the concaved follower or plate G, having spout g, substantially as described. A
8. In a fruit-press, the concaved follower G, having radial grooves c c, opening f, and spout g, substantially as described.
et. In a fruit-press, the combination, with the uprights B B and follower G, of the guides H II, attached to the follower, and provided with rollers d d, adapted to bear on the faces of the uprights, substantially as described.
5. In a fruit-press, the combination, with the concaved follower G, having spout y and rabbct l1, of the slotted plate K, substantially as described. l
6. In a fruitpress, the combination of the concaved follower G, slotted plate K, tub L, and piston M, substantially as described.
7. In a fruit-press, the Vcombination of the uprights B B', concaved follower G, having spout g and guides II II, the slotted plate K, tub L, piston M, suspended rigidly by rod N, the levers E F, drum Q., pulleys I.- R, and rope p, substantially as described.
S.- In a fruit-press, the combination of the sills A A, uprights B B, cross-pieces C C, base D, cross-beam I), rod N, piston M, drum Q, ropc p, levers E E, having pulleys R R, levers F F, concaved follower G, having spout 17, the slotted plate K, and tubs I L, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
