ToaZZ whom. it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Planter Check- Bowers; and I do hereby declare the following invention, such as will enable othersskilledto be a full, clear, and exact description of the in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of Vreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to that class of checkrowattachments to corn-planters yin which a rock-shaft located transversely on the planter is provided with a forked lever or' levers at each of its ends, which levers are swung by impact with knots or tappets on a stretched wire, and. thereby give motion to the rockshaft; and my invention is designed to improve the means for transmitting motion from the rock-shaft to the slide-barhgenerally used to actuate the seed measuring and discharging devices; and it consists in constructions and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.

The foregoing parts, described by letters of reference, constitute parts of an ordinary check-rower, and need not be any more fully herein described, as the construetions,with' I I are sliding arms journaled at their rear ends, one to each end of the bar H. Each arm I I has a slot, c', in its forward end. The arms I I are connected at or near the midlength portion of each by a link, J, which is journaled or hinged to each arm I I. The lower surfaces of the arms I I are in same plane as and slide upon theelevated flat portion G of the plate G, and the part G preferably has a cover or dust-excluder, g, which is shown broke-n away at Figs. I, 5, and 7, to
show working parts beneath. An arm, h, projects from the bar H, to which arm h a rod, h', is hinged, which extends to and may be connected in any ordinary manner with the slide-bar which actuates the seed-slides, so that oscillating the bar H will operate the seed-slides. The rock-shaft D is a divided shaft, or made in twoparts, D D, andthe adjacent ends of these parts are each provided with a projecting tappet-arm, dd, respectively. K is a rocking plate loosely seated on the shaft D, so as to receive the adjacent ends of each part D D, asthe most plainly shown at Fig. 4, and in such manner that the arms d d are within a triangular- The lower end of the rocking plate K terminates in a hook, 7c', to which one end of the spring E is attached, its other end `being attached to a hook, e, pendent from the baseGf Apawl, L, is journaled at its mid-lengthto the upper- IOO end of the rocking plate K. The outer end, Z, of the 'pawl L is weighted to overbalance its other end., Z', which reciprocates, as hereinafter described, in a slot,l g", in the plate G. The end Z' is preferably formed about as shown-that is, with a part, Z", which .comes in contact with the arms I I', and a projecting part, Z', which passes beneath the arms I I'. In their normal positions the arms d' d lie in or about the saine horizontal plane, as shown by arm d at Fig. 5.

iixed to the part D of the divided rock-shaft, and at Fig. 1 a knot or tappet, f, is shown in position to act upon and swingthe forked lever rearward in the ordinary manner as the planter' advances in the direction of the arrow seen at same iigure. This movement of the forked lever will partially rotate the shaft D", and the arm CZ, already in contact with the upper wall of the recess k, will swing the upper end of the plate K rearward of the planter, and thereby thrust the pawl L rearward, and, assuming the parts in relative positions shown at Figs. l and 2, the end Z" of the pawl will come in Contact with the forked end of the arm Iand push said arm rearward to its position shown at Figs. 3 and 7, and thereby swing the arm H and give a throw to the seed-slides, as already described. The tappet then, escaping from the forked lever, will free the parts, and the spring E will then return the rockingplate K and pawl L to their positions shown at Figs. 2 and 7, and the plate K, in so returning, will act on the arm d, and return it and shaft D" to their positions shown at same figure, and also at Figs. 1 and 5. The movement ofthe arm I rearward, as last described, in swinging the bar H, thrusts the arm I' for- `ward into the position shown at Figs. 3 and 5,
and ready for the action of the pawl L at its next throw given by impact of the forked lever and the next recurring tappet on the wire F. As the arm I moves rearward of the' planter, as last described, the pawl L being made to move in a straight pat-h by the slot g", its end Z, resting in the fork i of said arm, will cause the end of the arm I which is in contact with the pawl to move in a straight line or path also, and the link J will cause the slotted end of the arm I to swing outwardly -to pass the slotted end of the arm I, as shown by dotted lines at Fig. 7 5 and, further, as the arm I reaches the rear end of its movement, (seen at Fig.' 5,) the link J will bring the forked end of the arm I into proper position, as shown at same figure, for the action of the pawl L The weighted end of the pawl. when the arm eZ" is made to move the plate K, pawl L, and one of the arms I or I', the recess 7c is of such size that it will not move the arm cZ, and hence it and the shaft D will remain at rest while the shaft D is operating the seeding devices, and thereby not be subjected to useless wear. Vhen the shaft D is operating the seeding devices, the shaft D will W'hichever arm eZ or d" has acted to rock the plate K backward at its upper end will be acted on by the lplate in its' return movement, caused by the spring E, to return the arm d or d" to its normal position, as will be i,evident from the position of arm d" at Fig. 3.
The pawl L, as will be evident, may be otherwise formed than what I have shown, and may be held in a straight path without the slot g", and the forked ends to the arms I I may be dispensed with. It will also be evident that the shaft D may be; made in one undivided shaft, to which the plate K may be fixed, and operate the device as is done with the divided shaft, except in that both ends of the shaft will operate at the same time; hence I do not limit my claims to the special construction of any of the parts; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a check-rower, in combination with the oscillating bar H, connected by suitable mechanism with the planter seed-slidesand the arms I I', hinged or journaled one to each end of the bar H, the link J, hinged to said arms, and adapted to swing one of them in a curved path in its return movement to pass the other, which moves in astraight or nearly straight path in its direct movement, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a check-rower, in combination with the oscillating 'bar H and the arms I I', hinged or journaled one to each end of said bar, and
connected by a link, J, a pawl adapted to move in a straight line in contact with the arms II' alternately, substantially as and for-the purpose specified.
3. .In a eheck-rower, in combination with the oscillating .bar H, arms I I', hinged or journaled to said bar and connected by a link, J,
the pawl L, and plate G', having a slot, g", in
which the pawl reciprocates and upon which the arms I I slide, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
4. In a check-rower, in combination with the oscillatin g bar H, arms I I', hinged or j our- -naled to said bar, connected by a link, J, and having each a fork, t', in its end, the pawl L, adapted to move in a straight path and to engage with a fork, i, in the arms I I' alternately, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a check-rower, in combination with the oscillating bar H, arms I I', hinged or jou-rnaled thereto, connected by a link, J, and-provided with forks fi at their ends, the pawl-L, adapted to move in a straight path, with its part Z"' in the slot g" in the plate G', and its IOO iro
part Z" inposition to act on the arms I I' alternately, substantially as and for the purposeV specified.
