17 Claims. (Cl. '51-2'41) This invention relates to a drill press attachment such that the drill press may be used for driving tools with a horizontal spindle for sawing, slotting, grooving, grindr ing, and the like.
Numerous devices or attachments have been proposed for adapting a vertical spindle drill press to permit driving of a horizontal shaft tool such as a saw or grinding wheel. However, for the most part the prior art suggestions involve driving the attachment from the vertical spindle of the drill press. I have found that such arrangements have serious disadvantages and to overcome the same I have developed an improved arrangement wherein the drive for the attachment does not go through the spindle of the press. As will appear below, the mechanism may be changed in a few minutes from the horizontal spindle arrangement to a construction for performing the usual vertical spindle drilling type of opsates Patent erations, such as drilling, reaming, threading and milling.
Thus, the combination of these mechanisms may be easily and quickly adapted for positively driving tools interchangeably either with a horizontal or a vertical spindle. The combination has an attractive appearance and is practical and versatile and may be used either professionally or in practicing a hobby, or the like.
Hence, a primary object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved drill press attachment or companion piece so the combined mechanism may be quickly and easily changed to drive tools by either a vertical or a horizontal spindle, the spindles being positively driven and firmly held in position during operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel combination of a drill press and an attachment or companion piece of the aforementioned character wherein the drive for the attachment does not go through the vertical spindle of the drill press.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel attachment or companion piece for drill presses of the character heretofore described wherein the usual drill press spindle is utilized in a unique and novel manner.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel attachment for drill presses of the character set forth which is adapted to be used with drill presses having different throat .distances between the spindle and post of the drill press.
Further objects of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring first to Fig. 1, the invention is directed to improvements in a drill press of the type having a post 10,

The belt 20 is shown in dotted lines, in Figs. 1 and 2, since the mechanism is illustrated in full lines in position for horizontal spindle op eration of the character to be described. Further details of the drill press may include a lever and bolt con-' tion of the motor pulleys shown in dotted lines in Figs.
1 and 2 to the second or full line position in which the motor pulleys are in horizontal axis position. To accomplish this adjustment, the motor 15 is mounted on an adjustable plate'3il which is rotatable about a hori-; zontal axis through an angle of with respect to a stationary plate 31, the latter being rigidly secured to the head 11 by a boss 31'. A bolt and nut construction 32 is provided for this adjustment. The bolt body of the bolt construction 32 passes through a hole 33 in the plate 31 and through an arcuate slot 34 in the rotatable plate 30. By tightening and loosening the bolt and nut construction 32, the motor 15 may be locked in either position heretofore described. A pin 35 carried by the plate 30 extends into a hole 36 in the plate 31 to maintain the axis of rotation of the motor during adjustment from one position to the other and to aid in holding the motor in the selected position. As is obvious, the hole 33, slot 34, pin 35 and hole 36 may be interchangeably constructed in either plate 30 or 31, as desired.
Referring now to Figs. 3-5, the attachment for the drill press includes an attachment frame comprising a generally L-shaped base 40, a laterally extending rod 41, a spindle support block 42, a drive shaft support genmounting the attachment'frame to the post 10, and such means may take the form of one or more clamps 50 and 51 adjustably secured to the base 40 by a plurality of screws 53. These screws are tightened or loosened whenever it si'desired to secure or adjust the attachment from the position under the spindle 12 to another position away from under the spindle 12, in a manner to be described. I
The normally horizontal tool spindle of the attachment is designated at 55 and is rotatably supported on the attachment in radial alignment with the post 10. Thisis accomplished by providing a bearing sleeve 56 for the spindle 55, which sleeve is clamped between the vertical inner faces of a pair of parallel rectangular side plates 57 and 58 by means of a plurality of screws 59. The
plate 58 is rigidly afiixed to the block 42 by means of screws 60. The rod 41 is adjustably secured to' the base 40 by means of a pair of set screws 62 and is adjustably secured to the block 42 by similar screws The distance of the plates 57 and 58 from the post 50 may be" adjustably varied by loosening the screws 63 to slide the block 42 along the rod 41. A similar adjustment may also be obtained by loosening screws 62. 'In this manner,"

Such. means includes a pin 66 having an integral rectangular block or base portion 67 provided with oppositely' disposed elongated slots 68 into which a pair of pins 69"and 70 extend from the plates 57 and 58, respectively (Figs; 4 andS). The upperend of the pin 66 is adapted to be clamped inthe' chuck, designatedat' 71, of the drillpress spindle 12, so that when all of the screws 59, 62,.and' 63 are tightened, the attachment is locked against swinging movement about the post 10 by reason ofthe spaced point stabilization at the chuck 71 and theclamping action on the post'at 50-51. The elongated slots'68 permit the pin 66 to beadjusted toward oraway' from the post 10to provide another form of adjustment of the locking means. Thebase portion 67 of the pin 66 also serves as a fulcrum between the plates 57 and 58 by which the screws 59tighten the plates 57 and 58 simultaneously'about'the. bearing sleeve 56 and about the block 67.

An elongated block or strip 80 is fastened to the'plate 77 by a plurality of screws 81' to provide a fulcrum against which the plates 76* and 77 may bear whenthe screws 78* are tightened whereby to' produce. a clamping action at the bottoms of the plates 76 and 77 around the bearing sleeve- 75.
One end of the shaft 74 has secured thereto a bevel gear'90 which mesheswitha bevel gear 91 secured to one end of the spindle 55.- The other end of the shaft 74 is provided with one or more pulleys 92 and 93 which are aligned with the pulleys 18 and 17, respectively, and connected thereto by a belt 8 when the pulleys 1S and 17 are in-the full line position of Figs. 1 and 2. The other end of the spindle 55 may receive any type of tool,
such as=a grinding wheel 95, which is removably secured tothespindle 55. Any other horizontal spindle type of tool may be used in-lieu of the grinding wheel 95,- suchas-a saw, buffer, etc., as is obvious.

The motor 15 drives; the. pulley 18 (or 17), belt 98, pulley 92 (:93), shaft 74. and spindle. 55 to rotate theselected tool: 95 at the desired speed to operate on. work resting on, or secured to, the work table, not shown, and sup-- ported by the post below'the attachment; The attachment is clamped on thepost 10 by'the'clamps 50 and 51 and is locked against swingingmovement relative to the head 11. about the post 10, because it is secured to the spindle 12 through the medium of the pin 66 which is; held'within' the chuck 71 of the spindle 12. This providesa simple andefiicient drive of thetool 55; When; performing drilling, reaming, threading, orother oper ations which require a vertical spindle tool, the=chuck71 isloosened from the pin 66 and is moved upwardly by thelevcrr 26. The clamp 50 is loosened by screws 53,
the 'belt' 98 is removed, and the attachment is swung to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 out from. under the vertical spindle 12; Additionally, the: motor 15. is
adjusted to the dotted line position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by loosening the bolt andnut construction-32 to per.-
mit-themotor to-swing aboutthe axis of pin.35, after desired speed, so drilling operations may be performed by a tool held within the chuck 71 acting upon work resting upon, or secured to, the work table, not shown, and which is supported by the post 10.
A practical apparatus is thus provided for use in the home, small shops, garages, and many other places without the necessity of purchasing individual machines which otherwise might be required.
While the form of the invention now preferred has been disclosed, in accordance with the requirements of the statutes, other. forms may be used, all. coming within the scopeof the claims which follows.
I claim:
1. In combination, a drill press having a vertical axis spindle, an attachment for said drill press having a horizontal axis tool spindle, a motor, adjustable mounting means for said motor adapted to position the motor with its axis in either vertical or horizontal position,- and means providing a driving connection from said motor selectively to said vertical axis spindle for driving the latter or to said horizontal axis tool spindle for driving the latter without driving said vertical axis spindle.
2. In combination, a drill press having a vertical spindle; an attachment having a horizontal tool spindle and a horizontal drive shaft having a driving connection with said horizontal tool spindle; a motor having a rotary shaft; and adjustable mounting means for positioning said motor in either a first position wherein the rotary shaft of the motor is parallel to said vertical spindle and is adapted to be connected thereto for driving said vertical spindle or a second position wherein the rotary shaft of the motor is parallel to said horizontal drive shaft and is adapted to be connected thereto for driving said horizontal spindle without driving said vertical spindle.
3. In. combination, a drill press having a vertical post, a head on said post, a vertical spindle supported by and extending downwardly from said head, a motor adjustably mounted on said head and adapted when in a vertical axis position thereof to be drivingly connected to said vertical spindle, said motor also being adjustable to a horizontal axis position thereof, an attachment mounted on said post below said vertical spindle and having a tool spindle with a horizontal axis, and means on said attachment drivingly connected to said tool spindle and being. connectable to said motor when said motor is in said horizontal axis position for driving said tool spindle without driving said vertical spndle.
4. In. combination, a drill press having a vertical post, a headon said post, a vertical spindle supportedby and extendingdownwardly from said. head, a'motor adjustably. mounted on. said head and adapted when in a vertical axis position thereof'to be drivingly connected to, saidvertical. spindle, said: motor also. being adjustable to ahorizontal axisposition thereof, an attachment mounted on: said. post below said vertical spindle and having a toolspindle with. a= horizontal axis, means on said attachment providing. a drivingconnection between said tool spindle. and said motor when said motor is in. its horizontal axisposition. fordrivingsaid toolspindle without driving. said vertical spindle, and alignment securing means on said attachment connectable to said vertical spindle to. prevent relative movementv of said, attachment about saidQpost.
5. The combination of claim 4" further characterized in thatsaid. vertical spindle has a chuck,.and said alignment securing.meanscomprises an upright pin carried by said attachment and insertable in. said chuck.
6. The combination of claim 4 further characterized in. that: said. alignment securing, means is adjustable to and from said post for accommodating the post-to-chuck distance of. the drill press.
7. In combination, a drill press havinga verticalpost, ahead on saidp ost, a vertical spindle driven by and'extending downwardly. from said head, amotor adjustably mounted on said head and drivingly connectableto said head in a first position of the motor for driving said vertical spindle, said motor being adjustable to a second position, an attachment movably secured to said post below said vertical spindle and having a tool spindle, and means drivingly connecting said tool spindle to said motor in said second position for driving said tool spindle without driving said vertical spindle, said attachment being movable from under said vertical spindle during use of the latter.
3. In combination, a drill press having a vertical post, a head on said post, a vertical spindle driven by and extending downwardly from said head, a motor, an attachment mounted on said post below said vertical spindle and having a tool spindle, means for drivingly connecting said motor selectively either to said vertical spindie for driving the latter or to said tool spindle for driving the latter without driving said vertical spindle, said attachment being movable about said post from under said vertical spindle during driving of the latter, ,and alignment securing means on said attachment connectable to said vertical spindle for stabilizing the attachment and preventing relative swinging movement thereof about said post during driving of said tool spindle.
9. An attachment adapted to be secured to a vertical post of a drill press of the type having a vertical post, a head on said post, a vertical spindle extending downwardly from said head, and a motor for driving said vertical spindle, said attachment comprising a tool spindle, means for drivingly connecting said tool spindle to the motor for driving said tool spindle without driving the vertical spindle, and adjustable means to secure the attachment to the post below the vertical spindle, said adjustable means providing for swinging of the attachment about the post from under the vertical spindle during driving of the latter.
10. An attachment adapted to be secured to a vertical post of a drill press of the type having a vertical post, a head on said post, a vertical spindle extending downward- 1y from said head, and a motor for driving said vertical spindle, said attachment comprising a tool spindle, means for drivingly connecting said tool spindle to the motor for driving said tool spindle without driving the vertical spindle, adjustable means to secure the attachment to the post below the vertical spindle, said adjustable means providing for swinging of the attachment about the post from under the vertical spindle during driving of the latter, and alignment securing means carried by said attachment and connectible to the vertical spindle of the drill press to prevent relative swinging movement of the attachment about the post during driving of said tool spindle.
ll. An attachment according to claim further characterized in that said alignment securing means comprises an upright pin carried by the attachment and insertable in a chuck on the vertical spindle of the drill press.
12. An attachment for a drill-press of the type having a vertical post, a head, a vertical spindle extending downwardly from said head, and a motor for driving said vertical spindle, said attachment comprising a frame, adjustable clamp means for securing said frame to the post, a normally horizontal tool spindle rotatably supported on said frame and adapted to be aligned substantially radially with the post when said clamp means is secured to the post, a normally horizontal drive shaft rotatably supported on said frame in angular relation to said tool spindle, gear means connecting said tool spindle and said drive shaft, and means for drivingly connecting said drive shaft to the motor when the latter is disconnected from the vertical spindle whereby to drive said tool spindle without driving the vertical spindle.

An attachment according to claim 12 further characterized in that said attachment has alignment means cooperable with the vertical spindle of the drill press for restraining the attachment against swinging movement about the post, said alignment means being disconnectable from the vertical spindle for swinging the attachment from under the vertical spindle at said clamp means.
14. The combination of claim 1 further characterized in that said last'named means comprises a driving pulley on said motor, driven pulleys on said spindles, and a detachable belt for connecting the motor pulley to a selected one of said spindle pulleys.
15. In combination, a drill press having a vertical axis spindle, an attachment for said drill press having a horizontal axis tool spindle, a motor, adjustable mounting means for said motor adapted to position the motor with its axis in either vertical or horizontal position, means providing a driving connection from said motor selectively to said vertical axis spindle for driving the latter or to said horizontal axis tool spindle for driving the latter without driving said vertical axis spindle, and retainer means on said attachment cooper-able with said vertical axis spindle for stabilizing said attachment when the motor is drivingly connected to said horizontal axis tool spindle.
16. In combination, a drill press having a post and a vertical spindle, an attachment for the drill press comprising a frame, adjustable clamp means securing said frame to said post, a horizontal tool spindle journalled in said frame in substantially radial relation to said post, a horizontal shaft journalled in said frame in angular relation to said tool spindle, a driving connection between said tool spindle and said shaft, a motor, adjustable mounting means for said motor adapted to position the motor with its axis in either vertical or horizontal position, and means providing a driving connection from said motor selectively to said vertical spindle for driving the latter or to said shaft for driving said tool spindle without driving said vertical spindle.
17. The combination of claim 16 further characterized in that said attachment has alignment means cooperable with the vertical spindle of the drill press for restraining the attachment against swinging movement about the post, said alignment means being disconnectable from the vertical spindle for swinging the attachment from under the vertical spindle at said clamp means.
