UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EENsT EARTH, OE sTAUoHITZ, AND OTTO srILcEE, OE DEELN, cEEivIANvf -VEGI-:TABLECUTTER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,300, dated February 12, 1884. Applicatioulled March 23. 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern y Be it known that we, EENsT BARTH, of Stauchitz, and OTTO SPILGER, of Dbeln, in the Empire of Germany, lcitizens of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Gutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement of a number of knives side by side on' a shaft, the ends of said knives passing through slots in a plate inserted in the face of the table, in which the same are guided and' project adesired distance to cut the vegetable lengthwise before the usual stationary knife cuts the same in disks or thin slices; and, further, in the arrangement of a sliding plate placed upon the table and below the sliding box, whereby, according to the thickness of said plate, the thickness of the disks or slices out off by the stationary horizontal knife can be regulated.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of the machine,- and Fig. 2 a back view. Figs. 3 and 4 are longitudinal sections, and Figs. 5 and 6 cross-sections,of the y same.
Similar letters represent similar parts in all the figures.
B is the table4 or bed of the machine, having side pieces, A A, in which guiding` grooves t' and f are made. In the bed or table B the usual cutting-knife, M, is arranged,
4`slightly diagonal across the width of the table.
K is a box moving in the grooves f of the side pieces, A, to receive the vegetable to be cut, and in which the same is moved back and forth over` the table and the cutting-knife M.
This box K is provided with aplate or piston, d, topress uponthe vegetable and force the same down upon the surface of the table,'
guide the box K, so that its under side will4 just clear the edge of this knife M. If pieces or disks of a less thickness are to be cut, a sliding plate, S, of the desired thickness, is inserted into the grooves i of the side pieces, A A, extending up to the surface of the knife M, and whereby, by regulating the thickness of said plate S, the thickness of the pieces, slices, or disks out off from the vegetable ca be regulated.
'Forward of the cutting-edge of the knife M a shaft, g, is arrangedl at the under side of the table B, to which a number of knives, m, are attached, projecting, Whenin. an upright position, as shownjin Fig. 3, above the surface VOf the table B about as much as Athe edge of the knife M is arranged above the top surface of the table B. R is a plate inserted in the surface of the table B, flush with the same,V and provided with slots o", through which the ends of theA knives m pass, and in which the same are guided sidewise. The vegetable in the box K, while passing these knives m., will be cut longitudinally at its bottom'surface, and will then, when passing the knife M, be cut off the desired thickness, producing thereby regular strips of awidth corresponding to the distance the knives fm are placed from each other. When these knives m are not to be used, the shaft g is turned'so that the edges of the knives'm come below the top surface of the plate B, as shown in Fig. 4, when only the knife M will operate in the usual manner.
and is held in its place by sliding bolts n, by
which arrangement this shaft g, vwith thev knives m, is easily removed for the purpose of cleaning the same. i
We do not claim the arrangement of a number of splitting-knives in a vegetablecutter, operating in combination with the usual slicing-knife, broadly; but
What wc claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a 'vegetablecutter,l in combination with the table B, provided with a stationary knife, M, and sliding box K, a number of knives, m, attached side by side to a shaft, g', and the plate R, provided with slots or open ings T, through which the ends of the knives m project, and in which the same are guided,
the whole being arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. In avegetable-cutter, the sliding plate S, inserted between the table B and the sliding box K,in the manner and for the purpose described.
ERNST BARTH. OTTO SPILGER.

HEEM. LETTEET.
