A TTo/wEys United States Patent O LADIES AND MENS SQCKS Deward L. Corbin, San Bernardino, Calif., assigner to Diaco, a corporation of California Application August 11, 1958, Serial No. 754,424
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-239) This invention has to do with hosiery and more particularly with hosiery adapted to be worn when using slippers of the type which have a strap between the big toe and the other toes which is gripped by and between the big toe and the second toe.
The slippers of the type having a strap which passes between the big toe and the second toe have become quite popular for beach wear and other purposes. Many people find them to be uncomfortable, however, and desire to wear hosiery with such slippers. Hosiery available on the market, however, is not adaptable to this purpose since no space is provided between the toes through which the strap may be slid -to be properly gripped- I have devised hosiery which has a space such that it iits snugly between the big toe and the second toe; one portion encompasses the big toe alone and the balance encompasses the rest of the foot. My invention also provides a reinforced area for gripping a strap upo'n sandals, slippers and the like, to provide maximum wearability.
It is an important object of my invention to provide hosiery having two compartments at the toe end of each hose such that the big toe is separated from the other toes. It is a further object of my invention to provide such a hosiery in which the big toe can utilize either one of two compartments provided and the balance of the toes utilize the remaining compartment without special reference to which compartment which toes are in so that the hosiery may be interchanged from foot to foot without special fitting. It is a further object of my invention to provide hosiery of the class described having a reinforced area with which to grip a strap of sandals which are gripped between the toes.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art by reference to the following description when read in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a section through 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section through 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 1 illustrates a stocking of my design comprising a leg 10, foot 11, knitted top 12, heel 13, and toe portions 14 and 15 with indentation 16 between portions 14 and 15.
f, t EC@ Looking forward through the section 2 2 as shown and indicated in Figure 2 there is seen a toe portion of the stocking wherein my invention lays with two toe cavities 15 and 14. The body of the stocking 17 is of the so-called stretch construction which is well known in the trade and which is a knitted form which allows a great deal of stretching to conform to the foot outlines in various sizes.
Stitching 23 extends across the entire toe area. Reinforcing 24 consists of doubled thickness of material 17 at the area 24 for reinforcement, eXtra comfort and strength. Not only is the material d-oubled over thereby being doubled in strength but in addition to that is double stitched at thepoint 24 with any customary heavy thread. t
In practice the hosiery is Worn in the customary manner except that because of the stretch construction and the special formation of the toes as indicated, the big toe iits into either compartment 14 or 15 and the remainder of the toes t into the other compartment.
When the stockings are switched from foot to foot, no diiliculty arises since the two compartments are of equal sizes and because of the stretch construction of the knitting each conforms to the size of the toes it is enclosing.
The toe portion is sewn in shape indicated at 23 and the material 17 is doubled and double sewn as shown at 24 to provide a stronger gripping area and a more comfortable and heavier bodied area between the toes and in order to retain its shape.
It will be clear that when the foot is inserted in a stocking as shown that a strap or the like may be gripped readily in the portion 16 between the two toe portions of the sock.
While the embodiment of my invention shown herein is fully capable of performing the objects and advantages desired it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous modifications may be made without departing from the inventive concept disclosed herein. It is not intended that this invention be limited by the embodiment disclosed but only as necessary in accordance with the appended claim.
I claim:
A stocking of the class described comprising: a leg portion having a cuif attached to its upper extremity thereof; a heel portion; and a foot portion, said foot portion being constructed of stretchable stocking material, the front portion of said foot portion being divided into two equal sized pockets divided by an indentation suitable to accommodate a strap of a beach slipper designed to be gripped between the toes and having a reinforced area between said two toe portions.
