PAPER-CUTTING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, EDWIN R. SHERIDAN, of- Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this application.
My invention relates to an improvement in that kind of papercutting machines in which the clamping bar and cutting-knife pull against each other in the operations of holding the pile of paper down onto the table and cutting the pile; or, inother words, to that well-known order or type of machines in which the power applied to do the work operates first on the clamp to move it toward and forcibly against the pile of paper, and then, through the clamps, as a means of resistance, reacts on the cutting-knife, to force itthrough the pile of paper. A variety of machines, differently organized, have heretofore been made and'used in which this principle of operation has beencarried into effect-some in which one or another arrangement of racks and creeping-pinions has been employed as the means throughfwhich to properly transmit the power applied to the main shaft, to
the clamp and knife frames, respectively;
others in which one or another system of levers has been employed for this purpose, and
applying the power of the main driving shaft to the clamp and lever.
My invention has for its object an exceedingly simple organism of that type in which the clamp-frame and knife are arranged to pull against each other through the media of levers and a chain or rope connecting the moving parts and operated on by an ordinary winch and it consists in the combination, substantially as hereinafter specifierhwith the clamp-frame, knifeframe, and usual lever for drawing the knife-frame down, of alever pivoted at one end to the main frame of themachine, provided at the other end with a sheave, and adapted to act at an intermediate point on the clamp-frame, a winch mounted on a shaft having fixed journal-boxes and driven February 5, 1884.
from the main shaft of the machine, and a chain or'rope secured at one end to said winch, atthe other to the free end of the main or knife-frame lever and passing over the sheave before referred to, all aswill be presently more fully explained.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved machine, I will now more fully explain its-construction and operation,
referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 askeleton view, showing merely the relative ar -rangement of the winch, sheave, knife-lever, and chain.
NVherever the same parts occur in both views it will be found designated by the same reference-letter.
A is the main frame-work of the machine;
I), the table, (on which the pile of paper 0 is placed to be cut;) (I, the clamping-bar, which,
together with the lower beam, e, and tie-rods f f, constitute the clamp-frame.
G is the knife-frame, carrying the blade r and having a shearing movement by reason of being hung to work on pins projecting through its oblique slots; and H is the main knife-lev-er, pivoted at h, and connected by apitman, i, to the knifeframe, while its free end or longer arm is worked by the pull-up chain, all
or cable L is made fast at its lower end to one end of the lever H, as shown, andpasses thence upward and partially, around the sheave p, thence downward, and has its other end fastened to the winch 0, (on which it is wound in the usual manner.) The sheave p is mounted to turn freely on the journaldike end of the lever S, which latter, atits other end, is pivoted to the main frame A.
roo
At or near the middle of the upper edge of the lower'beam, e, of the clamp-frame is arranged, on a transverse horizontal arbor, an anti-friction roller, a, on top of which rests and acts the lower edge of the lever S, as clearly shown.
The operation of myimproved machine will be understood to be as follows: Power being applied as usual to the main shaft I, the pinion m and gear a will cause shaft J to rotate, and thus the winch 0, which is fast on J, will be made to wind up the chain L. The least resistance occurringtf: first at the locality of the sheave p, the latter will be forced downward until the clamp dshall have been caused by the action of lever S on roller 11, to come to a perfect bearing on and presses upon the pile of paper. Then, as the winding up of the chain continues, the lower end of lever H will be lifted (the sheave 10 now acting merely as a stationaryidl'er for the chain to run over) and the knife-frame G will be pulled down through the medium of rod 2' by the shorter and de scending arm of lever H, the knife being thus caused to pass through the pile of paper. The belt (or clutch, as the case may be) being then shifted, the motions of the parts are reversed, and they resume their original positions by gravity about as usual.
It will be seen that by the combination of devices shown a simple and strong organism is produced, in which the power applied will be used with a suitable degree of leverage on both the knife and the clampingbar, that there is a comparatively short length of chain or cable, and comparatively slighter opportunity for any undue spring in the parts when under strain, even though the latter be made no heavier than usual.
I am aware that it is not new in a paper-cutting machine to have combined with the clamp and knife-lever an actuating-chain, a winch, and pulleys, the whole organized so that by the direct action of the actuating-chain the clamp and knife-lever will be drawn toward each other in the operations of clamping and cutting the pile of paper. I therefore do not wish to-be understood as broadly claiming such a construction of machine; but
WVhat I claim herein asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the usual clampingframe, knife-bar, and connected main lever for pulling down the latter, an intermediately-arranged auxiliary lever, S, prox idedwith a sheave, p, and the usual winch, O, and chain L, the latter arranged in the manner specified, and the whole adapted to operate as and for the purposes hereinbefore explained.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of March, 1882.
E. R. SHERIDAN.
In presence of- J. N McINrIRn, W. H. MYER.
