2 Claims. (Cl. 242-5554) This invention relates to holders for rolls of paper, foil, and similar materials and more particularly to roll holders of the type wherein individual sheets or lengths thereof are to be torn therefrom.
Heretofore various means have been provided for holding paper rolls for ready dispensing of the sheets thereon particularly of the so-called horizontal roller type in which the roll of paper is inserted upon a spindle mounted in end journals for rotation therein. These generally have been of rather unsatisfactory construction for many applications and are'often easily unrolled, spilling large numbers of sheets of paper on the floor in an unsightly and messy manner and also they have been very difiicult to operate, particularly with one hand so that only the desired'sheets of paper are torn therefrom. To overcome the disadvantage of this type of horizontal paper holder various types of angularly disposed dispensers have been suggestedincluding those in which the paper roll is disposed about a spindle mounted at an angle to the vertical with some base member which acts as a frictional drag upon the rotation of the paperv on the roll. These latter devices have been satisfactoryffor certain applications but generally have been unsatisfactory in their control of the friction resisting the rotation of the roll.
Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved rollholder of the angularly disposed type. It is another object of the present invention to provide a paper roll holder of simplified and attractive construction that is economical to manufacture. It is another object of the present invention to provide a paper roll holder of the angularly inclined type wherein the frictional control of the rotation thereof is precisely regulated. It is another object of the present invention to provide a paper roll holder of the angularly disposed type that is more flexible in operation and may be mounted at a wide variety of angles to the vertical. It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a paper roll holder that may be easily and economically molded of a simple plastic material that will be pleasing and attractive in appearance and yet functional and accurately controllable in operation. These and other and further objects will be in part apparent and in part pointed out as the specification proceeds.

Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a paper roll holder according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a partial longitudinal sectional view of the holder of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 of another embodiment of the present invention.
Referring now to Figure 1 the paper roll holder comprises generally a bracket 12, having at one end a wall plate 14 and at the other end 16 a paper supporting spindle 18 about which the paper roll may be disposed. As may be readily seen the bracket 12 is of a relatively thin yet wide sheet-like construction tapering somewhat 2,928,618 Patented Mar. 15,
from the wall plate 14 to the spindle holding end 16. The wall plate 14 is joined to the main portion of the bracket 12 by reinforcing web 20 which serves to strengthen the angular displacement of the two end pol,- tions of the bracket 12 to securely hold the paper roll in the desired angular position. The spindle 18, as shown in Figure 2, is advantageous 1y of a hollow nature and has a bottomflange 22 and a stub shaft 24 extending downwardly therefrom. Spindle 18 is mounted in a hole 2 6 in end 16 of bracket';12.' After the spindle 16 is inserted through the hole26 a washer 28 is applied over the end thereof and the end of the shaft 24 is formed over so as to securely but r04 tatably hold the spindle in the bracket 12. Alternative ly other fastening means such as snap or threaded means may be used in place of pressure forming. 3
Spindle 18 is of a generally hollow cylindricalnature and normally extends slightly over half way through the roll of paper to be mounted thereon. It should be understood, however, that a solid spindle may be used. This provides a firm mounting for the roll of paper and also permits utilization of the central core for the placement of a deodorant or other object such as a reserve or auxiliary supply of paper or the like.
In the construction shown the spindle 18 is free ,to.ro{ tate within the bracket 12 in hole 26 subject only to the restriction of the friction between the flange 2'2, washer 28 and the bracket 12. Rotation of spindle 18 is thus accurately controlled by the dimension of the flange 22 and the washer 28. The frictional forces resisting the rotation of the spindle therefore do not significantly depend upon the size of the paper roll placed thereon nor on the diameter thereof. This results in a more uniform rotation and permits greater variation in angle from the vertical to adapt the paper holder to the particular sitnation encountered. i
In operation the spindle 18 is made vwith a diameter'approximately the same size as the diameter of the core of the paper roll to be inserted thereon. A snug fit is thus assured such that the paper roll will rotate with the spin-f dle 18 within the hole 26 of the bracket 12. Thus when it is desired to remove a section of paper from the roll the loose end may be conveniently pulled more or less at right angles to the axis of the roll of paper and when it is desired to tear it off a downward or angular pull at an angle to the axis of the roll of paper will separate the sheet from the roll itself. During the substantially right angle pull the roll will rotate with the spindle 18 but when a pull is exerted at an angle to the axis of the paper the friction between flange 22 and bracket 12 is increased sutficiently so that the paper is torn off rather than producing further rotation of the roll.
In the normal rest position the friction of the washer and flange about the bracket 12 is suflicient to prevent rotation of the roll of paper by itself so that the paper cannot become easily unwound therefrom so that it falls on the floor in a mess as with prior horizontal type rollers. Further, since the friction is accurately controlled, overrunning is eliminated and the operation of the device is much more uniform.
It will thus be apparent that my device may be simply and conveniently used with one hand only, without any fear of oversupply of paper and the like, and at the same time a very attractive dispenser is provided.
While I have shown in Figures 1 and 2 an angular displacement from right angles of approximately eighteen degrees it should be understood that with the construction of the present invention greater or lesser angular displacement may be utilized including a vertical orientation without varying the construction or the principles of operation of the invention. With the novel friction obtaining method and means of the present construction,
