PULLEY BLOCK FOR HAY ELEVATORS.

UNITED; STATES- PATENT GFFICEQ HENRY .L. FERRIs, OF ALDEN, ILLINoIs.
PULLEY-BLQCK'FOR HAY-ELEVATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,476, dated January 29, 1884.
Application filed October 27, 1883. (No model.)
T aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. FERRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alden, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Pulley- 4 Block for Hay Elevators and Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to pulley-blocks for hay elevators and carriers; and it-has for its object to produce a pulley, the main body of which shall be swive1ed,-so as to enable the load of hay which is being elevated to turn without twisting and tangling the hoistingrope, while at the same time provision is made for retaining the eye at the top of the block in position, so that it will readily enter and engage the latch of the carrier.
Another object of my invention is to provide the hook at the lower end of the carrier with a simple and convenient 1atch,which shall prevent the hay-fork from jumping off the said hook. To these ends my invention consists in theimproved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pulleyblock. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Q
The same letters refer to' the same parts in both figures.
A in the drawings designates the frame of the device, which comprises the side pieces or cheeks, B B, between which the pulley O is journaled.
D D designate the loops or guides which ex tend from the sides of the cheeks for the purpose of guiding the hoisting-rope.
The upper end of the frame A is provided with a shank, E, on which is swiveled an eye, F, having a laterally-projecting loop, G. In. practice, the hoisting-rope is reeved through the said loop G, and it will thus be seen that it will tend to retain the eye in proper position to enter a carrier of ordinary construction and engage the latch thereof.
The lower end of the frame A has ahinged :hook, H, in the end or point of which is fitted a spring-bail, I, the ends of which are adapted to engage catches J upon the shank of the hook, thereby serving to retain the hay-fork, which is mounted upon the said hook, in position. Additional catches, K, upon the lower part of the hook, serve to retain the spring-bail when it is not desired tomake use of the same as a catch or latch.
The operation of this invention will be readily understoodfrom the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is simple, convenient, and greatly facilitates the operation of the class of devices known as hay elevators and carriers.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by-Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A pulley-block for hay-elevators and carriers, provided at its upper end with a swiveled eye, having a laterally-extending loop, serving as'a guide for the hoisting-rope, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pulley-block, the combination of the frame A, having pulley G and shank E, with the swiveled eye F, having laterally-projecting loop G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a pulley-block, of a hook hinged at the lower end of the frame of the same, beveled catches upon the shank and body of the said hook, and aspringbail mounted transversely-in the point of the said hook, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY L. FERRIS. I
