COLOSTOMY IRRIGATION APPARATUS Filed Aug. l5, 1958 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Z E 6 df 4 /72 Ii bf/ Bec.. 22, i959 G. w. BOOTH ETAL 2,918,064
COLOSTOMY IRRIGATION APPARATUS Filed Aug. l5, 1958 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENToRs eofye/aoz This invention relates to improvements in colostomy irrigation apparatus, and more particularly to lmproved colostomy irrigating apparatus having valve means foicontrolling and stopping the flow of irrigating fluid through an associated catheter tube.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simpler, more eiicient and more practical apparatus of the character indicated whose valve means enables the user of the apparatus to control at will, and to set beforehand, if desired, the ilow of irrigating fluid through the catheter tube into the colostomy opening of the body, and to completely shut off such ow, when desired, so that colostomy irrigations and evacuations are rendered substantially easier, more effective and controlled, more comfortable and sanitary, and accompanied by less odor and inconvenience.
Another object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the character indicated above, whose manual valve means is incorporated in, or can be separate and adapted to be mounted in the side wall of an ordinary colostomy tube, opposite the upper, and usually ring-equipped receiving or intake end of the tube, the catheter tube being flexible and compressible and being adapted to be passed through the valve means and through the intake end of the tube into the colostomy opening of the body, the intake end of the tube being suitably secured in place on the body, the valve means having a manually movable and adjustable member which is adapted to be moved from an initial position in which the catheter tube is wide open, to adjusted intermediate positions in which the catheter tube is pinched or compressed so as to controllably reduce the flow of irrigating fluid therethrough, and upon removal of the catheter tube from the valve means, to a final position in which the movable member serves as a closure for the opening in the side wall of the colostomy tube so that spillage of fecal matter through such hole is precluded when the colostomy tube is removed from the body after a colostomy irrigation.
A further object of the invention is to provide combined valve and adapter means of the character indicated above wherein the adjustable and movable member is slidably mounted on a relatively stationary member which serves as mounting means for the valve means on the side wall of a colostomy tube, and as an adapter and support through which catheter tubes of differing diameters are passed, the arrangement of the movable member and the stationary member being such that when the valve means is mounted in place on the side wall, manipulation of the movable member relative to the stationary member cuts the hole in the side Wall needed for passage of the catheter tube.
Other important objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, a specific form of tl e invention is set forth in detail.

Figure 12 is a plan view of the movable member of Figure 1l.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like or related numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, and rst to Figures 1 through l0, thereof, the apparatus illustrated therein, and generally designated 20, comprises a conventional form of flexible transparent colostomy tube 22, having an intake or receiving opening 24 at its upper end having a peripheral edge portion 26 securably engaged around the annular flange 28 and between the flange 28 and a divergent annular flange 30 of a usually metal ring 32, to which related ends of body encircling straps or belts 34 and 36 are suitably secured, for holding the ring 32 against the body, around its colostomy opening (not shown) preparatory to and during a colostomy irrigation and evacuation. The colostomy tube 22 has a side wall 38, and a portion lll thereof, opposite the ring 32 when the tube 22 is in place on the body, as shown in Figure l, mounts a combined valve and adapter 42.
The combined valve and adapted 42, comprises a relatively stationary member, in the form of an adapter 44, which comprises an inner section 46 and an outer section 4S. The inner section 46 comprises a tubular cylindrical main portion Sd having on its longitudinally inward end a lateral annular hook ange 52 which defines an annular groove 54 around the outward side of the main portion S0 which faces toward the longitudinally outward end of the inner section 46. The outward side of the main portion 5t) is circumferentially indented near the longitudinally outward end 56 of the inner section 46, to define an annular groove S3 which is spaced longitudinally from the groove 54.
The outer section 48 of the adapter`44 comprises a relatively flat annular side wall 60 which is larger in diameter than the L-shaped flange 52 of the inner adapter section 46, a lateral annular flange 62 projecting inwardly from the outer end of the side wall 60, and an annular longitudinally inwardly projecting flange 64 on the inward edge of the flange 62. The flange 64 has a terminal free edge`66 which is spaced longitudinally outwardly from the free edge 68 of the side wall 60. The inside diameter of the annular flange 64 is such that the annular flange 64 can slidably and freely telescope onto the cylindrical main portion 50 of the inner adapter section 46, as shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8. v
When the outer adapter section 48 is thus telescoped into and assembled with the inner adapter section 46, the flange 64 of the outer section 48 engages loosely in the groove 54 of the inner section 46, and the flange 70 of the hook flange 52 engages loosely in the'groove 72 defined by the side wall 60 and the flange 64 of the outer adapter section 48; and the outer end of the main portion 50 of the inner adapter section 46, and the circumferential groove 58 are exposed beyond the outer end of the outer adapter section 48, as is apparent in Figures 6, 7, and 8.
In order to apply the adapter to the sidewall portion v40 of the colostomy tube 22, the sections 46 and 48 are separated and then engaged with the inward and outward sides of the tube side wall portion 40, respectively, and are then pushed together into telescoped relation, so as to clamp and wedge portions of the side wall portion 40 in the grooves 58 and 72, as shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8. The outer section 48 is then rotated relative to the inner section 46, while the inner section is held stationary, so
as to sever the material of the tube side wall portion and form an opening 74 therein having annular free edge 76 in the region of the groove 58, the cut away material being then removed to expose the outer end of the inner section 46 and is disposed of.
The combined valve and adapter 42 further comprises a valve slide, generally designated 80, which is installed on the exposed outer end of the inner adapter section 46 following the above described application of the adapter 44 to the bag 22.
The valve slide 80 is elongated transversely of the adapter 44 and comprises a flat elongated plate portion 82, about three times greater in length than the diameter of the outer end 56 of the inner adapter section 46, and having an arcuate end 84, and along the opposite longitudinal side edges of the plate portion 82, and projecting laterally inwardly therefrom at and beyond the inner side 86 of the plate portion 82 is a continuous hook flange 88 having a laterally projecting flange 90 which is spaced from the inward side 86 of the plate portion 82 and has a free laterally inward edge 92, and free end edges 94. -The hook flange 88 does not extend along the squared end 8S of the plate portion 82, so that entrance is provided at this end of the slide 80 to enable the slideV 80 to be operatively engaged on the exposed outer end 56 of the inner adapter section 46, with the free edge 92 of the hook flange 90 engaged slidably and rotatably in the circumferential groove 58 of the inner adapter section 46.
The inner side 86 of the plate portion 82 of the slide 80 is provided near its arcuate end 84 with a cylindrical boss 96 of a diameter to act as a closure for the outer end of the bore 98 through the main portion S0 of the inner adapter section 46, as shown in Figure 8, when the slide 80 is moved endwise relative to the adapter 44 so as to place the boss 96 in frictional engagement with and in registry with the outer end 56 of the inner adapter section 46. In other positions of the slide 80 the inner side 86 of the plate portion 82 is not so frictionally engaged with the outer end 56 of the adapter section 46.
As shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, the plate portion 82 of the slide 80 is provided near its squared end 85 with a circular catheter tube passing opening 100 of a relatively large diameter, and at a point between and spaced from the opening 100 and the boss 96, with a circular catheter passing opening 102 of a diameter smaller than that of the opening 100, the purpose being to selectively and snugly accommodate catheter tubes of different diameters.
As shown in Figures 1 and 5, the above described assembly of components having been achieved, the particular flexible and compressible catheter tube 104 is passed inwardly through such as the smaller hole 102 of the slide 80, through the bore 98 of the inner adapter sec tion 46, across the tube 22, through the tube ring 32, and into the colostomy opening in the users body, not shown, whereat the irrigating fluid, such as prepared water in a suitable container (not shown) is run through the catheter tube 104 and into the colostomy body opening through the catheter tube nozzle 106 for producing the desired irrigation and evacuation.
Where full flow of irrigating fluid is not desired or it is desired to vary the rate of flow of fluid during the process, the slide is moved endwise from the position shown in Figures 5 and 8, to an intermediate position, wherein one side of the edge of the slide opening or hole 102 is brought nearer to the opposed side of the bore 98 of the inner adapter section 46, so that the catheter tube 104 is compressed therebetween and its bore thereby re duced in cross section so as to reduce the flow of fluid through the catheter tube 104; and if desired, to completely cut off such flow, in such a way as to hold the injected fluid in the intestine of the user of the device `for a desired period of time.
When it is desired to effect an evacuation, the catheter tube 104 is withdrawn from the body opening so as to enable flow of fecal matter and irrigating fluid into the tube 22 through its intake opening 24. After an evacuation, the catheter tube 104 can be withdrawn also from the adapter 44, and the slide 80 moved endwise to the closure effecting position shown in Figure 8, wherein the boss 96 closes the bore 98 through the inner adapter section 46 and prevents any escape of fecal matter and accompanying odor from the tube 22 through the side wall opening 74, and only through the open lower end of the tube 22, which will usually be located in a disposal container, such as a toilet bowl. The closed position of the slide 80 is maintained until after the device has been removed from the body of the user, to enable emptying the tube 22 without danger of leakage through the side wall opening 74. If the tube 22 is to be disposed of after usage, the adapter 44 is removed by separating its sections 46 and 48 before throwing the tube away, for Vreuse on a fresh tube.
The form of combined valve and adapter shown in Figures 11 and 12, and generally designated 42a, differs from that shown in Figures l to l0 and described above, in that the plate portion 82a of the slide 80a has only one catheter tube passing hole 100a, located at its squared end a, and a tapering catheter tube compressing and wedging slot 110 is provided longitudinally of the plate portion 82a between the boss 96a and the hole 10011, and has its wider end opening diametrically into the hole a, as indicated at 112, for compressing a catheter tube as the slide 80a is moved endwise relative to the catheter tube and the adapter 44a in the direction of the catheter tube originally passed through the hole 100a.
The combined Valve and adapter 42a differs further from that of Figures l to 10, only in that the grooves 54a and the flanges 70a and 64a of the sections 46a and 48 are Asomewhat shallower than the corresponding components of Figures 1 to 10, and are rounded or transversely curved and effect less damaging but equally secured engagements with the side wall portion 40 of the side wall 38 of a colostomy tube 22.
Although there has been shown and described herein preferred forms of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, and that any change or changes in the structure of and in the relative arrangements of components thereof are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
