COAL=CLEANER.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 291,788, dated January 8, 1884-.
Applicaton'filed October 18, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it 71mg/ concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM HENRY SHEP- HERE, of Pittston, in the .county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Coal-Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of vthis specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line a' a, Fig. l.
The object of this invention is to provide a mechanism for separating slate from coal as the said coal passes down the chutes from the gradingscreens.
The invention consists in a coal-cleaner constructed with stationary grate-bars placed in an opening` in the chute-bottom, and alternating with movable grate-bars connectedv by cross-bars with sliding rods connected by bars with a rock-shaft connected with and driven from a rotary crank-shaft, as will be hereinaf ter fully described and claimed.
A represents a coal-chute., B is a shaft which revolves in bearings in standards C, at tached to the chute A. v
To one end of the shaftB are attached afast pulley, D, and a loose pulley, E, to receive a driving-belt from asteam-engine or any other convenient power. To the other end of the shaft B is attached a crank-wheel, F, to which is pivoted the end of a connecting-bar, G. The other end of the bar Gris pivoted to a crankarm, H, attached to a rock-shaft, I, j ournaled in bearings in standards J, attached to the chute A.
To the shaft I are attached two crank-arms, K, to which are pivoted short connecting-bars L. Ihe other ends of the bars L are pivoted to the middle part of the bars M, to the ends of which are rigidly attached the upper ends 45 of the rods N. The rods Npass downthrough guide-holes in the sides of the chute A, and` to their lower ends are attached cross-bars O, to which are attached grate-bars P. The grate bars P, as the crank-shaft I is rocked by the revolution of the crank-shaft B, are raised and lowered through an opening, Q, in the bottom of the chute A. The gratebars P alternate with stationary gratebars R, placed in the opening Q and secured to the chute A. Vith this construction, as the coal in passing down the chute A passes over the grate-bars P R, the successive rising of the grate-bars P above and descending below the level of thegrate-bars R turns the pieces of slate that may be with the coal edgewise, and causes them to pass through the spaces between the v said gratebars and drop to the ground, while the irregular form of the pieces of coal prevents the said coal from passing through the said spaces and causes it to pass on down the chute.
The grate-bars P R may be fiat or round; but I prefer to make them flat, as operating more effectively in turning the pieces of slate edgewisc.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the chute A, having opening Q, of the stationary grate-bars R, the movable grate-bars P, the connecting-bars O, the sliding rods N, the connecting-bars M L G, the rock-shaft I, provided with crank-arms K H, and the revolving crank-shaft B, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the pieces of slate will be made to. pass out between the grate-bars, as set forth.
IVILLIAM HENRY SHEPHERD.
