s'OLE ANO HEEL PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 291,611, dated January 8, 1884.
Application ledNovember 9, 1883. (N model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON LEVY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ware, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Sole and Heel Plate, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to heel and sole plates,
IO the object being to provide a plate of neat,`
cheap, and durable construction, and one that shall be of the minimum weight Without detracting from its durability.
With these ends in view the invention con- `r 5 sists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a perspectiveV tions cc, areprovided at their ends with lugs d,
adapted to be driven in the` sole of the shoe to aid in retaining the plateupon the said shoe.
C C represent a` series of spuds or creepers, which are `formed integral With theplate,
" and having their ends pointedto thoroughly prevent any slipping ofthe same when in use. D represents aseries of spuds or nailsfor securing the plates upon the sole.
`E represents the heel-plate, which is of the l4o same construction as the sole-plate already described, excepting that the slots or slits in the same extend transversely instead of longitudinally. i
It will be apparent from the above description that by forming the plates with longitudinal slots, as shown in the drawings, the Weight ofthe plate is greatly diminished, and yet the sole of the shoe is effectively protected from any wear, the convolutions serving to prevent any Wear upon the side ot' the sole, and` 5o the lugs d serving to securely retain the plate upon the sole ofthe shoe.
These plates are designed more particularly for use upon what are termed "base ballV shoes, and shoes of this class which are gen- 5 5 erally used in athletic sports.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
\ l. The herein described plate for" shoes, `formedof a single piece of metal having the longitudinal slots a a, projecting portions c c', provided at their ends with lugs d, adapted to enter the sole ot' the shoe to aid in retaining the plate thereon, and spuds or spurs C i C, formed integral with said plate, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a shoe, of a plate adapted to be secured thereto, formed of a single piece ot metal having the longitudinal slots c a', projecting portions c c', provided at their ends with lugs d, adapted to enter the sole of the shoe to aid in retaining the plate thereon, and spuds C C, formed integral with said plate, substantially as set forth. 7 5
\ In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON LEVY.
