Description

`i 1 is a perspective view.
...PATENT risica.
JOSEPH \V. DA'ISON, OF- AUBURN, ALABAMA..
srncrrron'rroni forming par@ of Letters Patent No. 291,579, caiga January. s, leed. f
Appntanon nieantarcn i4, lesa (No monti) l This invention relates to seed-planters, and
1o it consists incertain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hcreinafter` fully described, a-nd particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure Fig. 2 is atop view. Fig. 3 is a'vertical transverse section.
Fig. 4L is a detail view in perspective of the seed box or drum, with parts broken away for the purpose of showing the construction more 2o clearly. Fig. 5 is a detail viewof the central wheel or disk. Fig. 6 is a detail view of central partition.
The same letters refer to the same all the figures.
A in the drawings designates the frame, which consists of the sides B B, connected `by transverse braces C, D,andE, the ends ofwhich are screwthreaded, and provided with spacingnuts F and clamping-nuts G. The front ends 3o ofthe side pieces, which are to be made of heavy strap-iron, are bent inwardly and forwardly, as at H, and connected by a bolt, I. Between the front ends7 H, which form the tongue, is clamped the 'standard J ofthe furrow-opener K, for the vertica-l adjustment of which suitable provision is made. Upon the ends of the rear brace, E, are secured vertical the parts in bracesLL, the lower ends of which carry the` coverer M. The lower ends of the bars or 4o braces L are connected by inclined braces N with the ends ofthe central framebrace, D. Handles O O are secured to the ends of the brace D and to the upper ends of the vertical bars L, as shown. In this manner a strong and durable and at the same time a light and neat frame is constructed at a small expense. The central frame-brace also serves as an axle upon which the seed box or drum P is `journaled, as shown. The said drum consists, es- 5o sentially, of a central wheel or disk and two Sides or heads, the construct-ion and arrangement of .which I shall now proceed more fully to describe.
Q designates the central disk or wheel, which is a flat ring of suitable dimensions,` having a diametrical brace, t, through which the axle D passes.
S S are the heads, which consist of cylinders closed at their outer ends and provided at their inner endswith iianges T and lugs U, to receive the transverse bolts V, by means of which they are secured to the center disk, washers W being interposed, so as to leave any desired space between the center disk and the inner open ends of the heads. Vhen the device is to be used as a combined seed-planter and fertilizer-distributer, a thin partition-plate, X,
is interposed between the disk Q, and one of the heads. The said plate X is provided with a radial slot, Y, in order to enable it to be 7o readily adjusted or removed, as may be required. When the plate is in position, the said slot registers with one end of the diametrical brace R, thus making the separation between the two heads or ends complete. The 7 5 -heads or ends S are provided with hinged doors Z, through which they may be readily filled when required.
A2 A2 are segmental plates hinged upon the transverse bolts V, adjoining one side of the 8o plate or disk Q. The free ends of the said segment-plates are adjustable by set-screws B2, pressing or bearing against the disk Q, for the purpose of regulating the feed.
In operation the drum P revolves, and the seed and fertilizing material drops out thr ugh the spaces between the inner open ends of the heads S and the disk Q into the furrow made by the opener K, and is covered by the coverer M.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesa Vl. The combination of the side pieces, B B, the transverse braces C D E, the vertical bars secured upon the ends of the rear brace and 95 carrying the coverer, the diagonal braces connecting the lower ends of the vertical bars with the ends of the center brace, and the handles secured to the ends of the center brace and to the upper ends of the vertical bars,as set forth. roo
2. The combination ofthe side pieces, B B, the transverse connectingbraces C, ll), and E,
all of which are provided with spacing-nuts F and clamping-nuts G, and the revolving seed boX or drum jonrnaled upon the eenter brace, as set forth.
3. The Combination of the central disk or ring, the cylindrical heads bolted to the sides of the same, the interposed washers, and a detachable partition-plate secured between the center disk and one of the heads, as set forth.
4. The combination of the central disk or ring having a diametrieal brace j ournaled upon the aXle D, the cylindrical heads, and the detachable partition-plate having a radial slot, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the center ring, the
cylindrical heads having lugs atA their inner ends, the transverse connecting-bolts, and the segmental feed-regulatin g plates pivoted upon said bolts adj oning one side ofthe center plate, and provided at their free ends with set-screws bearing against the said center plate, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH WASIIINGT DAWSON.
