QULTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,577, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed October 13, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oneida, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Cultivator, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cultivators arranged to be used in hoeing or cultivating two or more rows of corn'and the like; and it has for its object to provide means possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and general efficiency. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspcctive view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the slotted cross-beam; and Fig. 4 is a detached view, showing the attachment of the plow-beams to the slotted beam.
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the axleof a wheel-cultivator, provided with the usual wheels, B B, and a tongue, 0. To the top of the latter is secured a beam, D, slotted at each end, as shown at E, bails or yokes F being held in the slots of said beam at each end by means of suitable bolts and nuts, G H.
It will be seen that byloosening the bolts and nuts the bails can be adjusted at varying distances within slots E, said bolts and nuts being tightened when the adjustment has been effected, and securely holding the bails from accidental displacement.
I I designate plates secured to the top and bottom of the plow-beams J, at the front ends of the latter, said plates projecting forward, and provided with hexagonal blocks K, two in number, the latter being connected together by bolts between the front ends of the plates I. The blocks are formed with grooves i, to receive the yokes or bails F, and in operation it will be seenthat the blocks permit the plow-beams to be lifted vertically from off the ground, while the pivotal connection of the plates I to said blocks allows the lateral movement of the plow-beams. ployed to effect these movements are exceed The means em ingly simple and not likely to get out of order.
The plow-beams J J are provided with the ordinary handles, L, and at the outer or rear end of said beams are attached standards M, which project downwardly therefrom, a crosspiece, N, being secured to the front face of the standards and connecting the same. Plow feet or standards 0 are attached to the crosspiece at each end, the latter being slotted at o, to permit ready adjustment of the plowfeet to suit varying widths of rows. Shovelplows P are adj ustably attached to the lower end of the plow-feet, as shown, any suitable plow being used for this purpose.
Q Q designate rods or bars attached to the standards M, and provided with a notch or recess, 0, at their upper ends, an eyebolt, B, being journaled in the plow-beams J, and having its ends r turned at right angles, so as to engage with the recess 0 in the bars Q, and thus lock the same. These rods or bars Q serve not only as braces for the standards M, but also-act to hold the plows at a certain depth or inclination in the ground, this inclination being varied as desired. v The operation of my invention is obvious, and need not be particularly recited here. Since each plow-beam is separate and distinct from the other, any variation in the width of the rows of corn need not affect its operation, since the plow-beams and the plow-feet are arranged to provide for this, as above de scribed. Each plow-beam, with its attachments, cultivates a distinct row of corn, and for the same purpose as many more beams may be added as found desirable.
It will be apparent that various modifica tions maybe made in the foregoing without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim as new- 1. In a cultivator, the combination, with the slotted beam D, provided with yokes or bails F, secured to the same in the manner shown, of the plow-beams J, provided with plates I at their front ends, said plates connecting apair of blocks, K, between the same, the blocks being formed with grooves i, to receive the yokes or bails, said parts being arranged to permit the vertical and lateral ends, and plow-feet adjustable in the slots of movement of the plow-beams, as set forth. said cross-pieces, as and for the purposes set 2. In a cultivator, the plow-beams having forth. standards M projecting downwardly there In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 5 from, in combination with the rods Q, atmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in 15 taehed t0 the standards and provided with presence of two Witnesses.
