TRAC E-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,540, dated January 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL SCHOENTHALER, of Akron, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trace-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of trace-buckles which are composed of a buckle-frame, a tongue-bail hinged to the buckleframe, and abail or loop attached to the hame-tug and adapted to bear upon the pivoted tongue-frame of the buckle.

The object of my invention is to produce a buckle of this character which shall be simple in construction and capable of easy adjustment on the trace, and in which the tongue is relieved from the greater portion of the strain.

My invention consists of the improvements in the construction of the buckle which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, "Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the buckle. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the buckle.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.

A represents the hame-tug, andBthe trace.

0 0 represent the side bars of the buckleframe; D,the front cross-bar of the buckleframe, adapted to bear against the inner side of the trace; and E, the elevated rear crossbar of the buckle-frame, adapted to bear against the outer side of the trace. The side bars 0 C may be connected by an intermediate crossbar, cl, to render the buckle-frame more rigid.

F represents the tongue bar or plate, arranged above the front cross-bar D of the buckle-frame, and provided with rearwardly-- extending side bars f f, which are pivoted at their rear ends to lugs or cars g, formed 011 the side bars of the buckle-frame.

h is the tongue, secured to the frame 011 the inner side of the cross bar orplate F, and arranged to bear against the front side of front side, which forms a seat for the end of the tongue.

K represents the tug-bail, which is provided with a front cross-bar 7a, to which the tug is attached, and side bars k, the rear ends of which are arranged between the'side bars f of the tonguefra1ne, and provided with outwardly-extending flanges or projections Z, which bear upon the side bars, so that a pull on the tug will swing the tongue-plate F toward the front cross-bar D of the buckleframe and cause the trace to be clamped be tween the bars F and D, and the tongue to be held securely in place.

The rearends of the side bars may be connected by a cross-bar, m, which bears against the outer side of the trace and renders the tug-bail more rigid.

The tongue-frame F is preferably cast with a pivot, n, which engages in the openings in the ears 9, and the rear ends of the crossbars f of the tongueframe are compressed and the pivots sprung into the ears y, where by the tongue-frame is firmly attached to the buckle-frame.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in abuckle, of abuckleframe having a front crossbar D and a rear cross-bar, E, a tongue-plate, F, arranged above the front cross-bar D, and having the rear ends of its side bars f, pivoted to the buckle-frame, and a tug-bail having its side bars arranged between said bars of the tongueframe, and provided with outwardly-projecting ears l, bearing upon the side bars of the tongue-frame, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, in a buckle, of a buckleframe having its front cross-bar provided with a recess or depression, a tongue-frame pivoted at its rear end to the buckle-frame,

and a tongue secured to the tongue-frame and arranged to bear against the front cross-bar of the buckle-frame, in the recess thereof, sub the buokleframe, and a tug bail having ears stantially as set forth, Z, which bear upon the side bars of the tongue- 3.
