DETACHABLE EXTENSION FOR SHELVES Filed Nov. 10, 1958 INVENTORS 117 1211091 1? HDWDL'IV BY bm'JEm/mmswr WM ATTORNEYS United States Patent U DETACHABLE EXTENSION FOR SHELVES Henry F. Bowden and Bobby J. Richardson, Corsicana, Tex.; said Richardson assignor to said iiowden Application November 10, 1958, Serial No. 772,836
4 Claims. (Cl. 211153) The present invention relates to detachable extensions for shelves and particularly to such extensions which are portable for movement from one shelf to another.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a detachable extension for shelves onto which merchandise can be moved when the merchandise is being cleaned and/or inventoried, permitting the merchandise to be moved from its normal position and returned thereto with a minimum of handling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shelf extension of the class described above which requires no movable clamping members to secure the extension to the shelf.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shelf extension of the class described above which is unitary in construction and is provided with a retaining rim arranged around its outer edges to prevent merchandise from being displaced therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a detachable extension for shelves of the class described above which is inexpensive to manufacture, simple to use, and which can be attached and detached from the shelf without disturbing merchandise on the shelf or on the extension.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention shown attached to a shelf shown partially broken away for convenience of illustration;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section taken along the line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows with the shelf shown in broken lines;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the structure illustrated in Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, reference numeral 11) indicates generally a shelf extension construction in accordance with the invention.
The shelf extension includes a generally rectangular, horizontal support panel 11 having an outer edge 12, an inner edge 13 parallel thereto and perpendicularly extending opposite end edges 14.
The panel 11 is arranged with its upper surface aligned with the upper surface of selected shelf 15. support panel 11 has the inner edge 13 thereof engaged with the outer edge of the shelf 15.
The support panel 11 is provided with transversely extending half-round molding 16 secured to the upper surface thereof at the opposite end edges 14- and parallel thereto. The moldings 16 each have an extension 17 on the inner end thereof which projects inwardly beyond The Patented Nov. 24, 1959 the inner edge 13 of the support panel 11, with the lower surface thereof engaging with the upper surface of the shelf 15. The moldings 16, along with a half-round molding 18 secured to the support panel 11 along the outer edge 12 thereof, form a retaining rim surrounding the outer portions of the support panel 11 to prevent merchandise from sliding oif therefrom.
A generally rectangular bar 19 extends transversely across each end of the support panel 11 at the end edge 14 thereof underlying the half-round molding 16. An elongated inverted half-round molding 20 underlies each of the bars 19 in aligned relation thereto and each are provided with an elongated inward extension 21 which projects inwardly beyond the inner edge 13 of the support panel 11 substantially beyond the extension 17.
The extensions 21 are each provided with a resilient pad 22, positioned on the inner end thereof and resting on the upper surface thereof. The resilient pads 22 are each provided with a shank 23 which extends downwardly from the pad 22 into a bore 24 formed in the extension 21.
In the use and operation of the invention, the detachable shelf extension 10 is supported on the shelf 15 by positioning the panel 11 in a plane with the shelf 15 with the extensions 17 supported on the outer edges of the shelf 15 and the extensions 21 extending beneath the shelf 15 with the pads 22 engaging the underside of the shelf 15 so that the panel 11 is supported with its upper surface in a plane with the upper surface of the shelf 15.
After the extension shelf 10 has been supported on the shelf 15, merchandise from the shelf above can be moved on to the shelf extension 10 so that the shelf from which the merchandise has been moved can be cleaned and the merchandise cleaned before replacing on the cleaned shelf. In this way the merchandise can be handled without danger of being misplaced and the worker can leave the cleaning operation to wait on customers without having me merchandise misplaced, or in the way. The shelf extension 10 can also be used during inventory of the merchandise so that the merchandise can be moved as it is physically counted to make sure that no item is overlooked.
In assembling the self extension 10, elongated securing elements 25 are arranged in piercing relation to the moldings 16, panel 11, bars 19 and moldings 20, as can be seen in Figures 2 and 3. The molding 18 is secured to the panel 11 by adhesive or other suitable means.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An extension shelf for detachable engagement with a permanent shelf comprising a generally rectangular horizontal panel, a pair of moldings extending transversely of said panel adjacent the opposite ends thereof with each of said moldings having an extension projecting beyond said panel in one direction to overlie said permanent shelf, a second molding underlying each of said first moldings beneath said panel with each of said second moldings having an extension substantially greater than the extensions of said first moldings in the same direction and arranged to underlie said permanent shelf, and means securing said moldings to said panel.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said second moldings are spaced below said panel and a generally rectangular transversely extending bar is positioned between said second moldings and the lower face of said panel.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein a resilient block is secured to the inner end of each of said exten- 3 4 sions in position to contact the underside of said per- References Cited in the file of this patent manent shelf.
4.
