Description

(No Model.)
- 0.l S. LESLIE.
LELELD EOE Eo's'jrs. No. 291,208'. A Patented Jan. 1, 1884.
EullwlllLL muil UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR S. LESLIE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY LANDT, OF SAME PLACE.
SHIELD FOR POSTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 291,2(8, dated January 1, 1884. Application filed January 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osonn S. LESLIE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Mil- Y ing drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for preventing posts which are set in the ground from being disturbed by frost. It is a Well-known fact that the supporting-posts of verandas and fences when set in ground which is subject to severe frosts are frequently heaved up and deranged by the action of the frost upon the surrounding earth.. With my device the earth is kept from contact with the post, thereby relieving it from all liability of derangement to which it would otherwise be subjected. v
My invention consists in providing a movable pipe or shield around and free from contact with the post, which shield will exclude the earth and all moistureV from that portion of the post which is above the lowest frostline in the earth. This pipe or shield is free to move upward and downward, or slightly in a horizontal direction, without disturbing the post.
The construction of my invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a cross-section thereof. Y v
Like parts are represented by the same reference'letters in both views.
A represents the supportingpost, which, as shown, is made of tubing. A solid wood or metallic post may, however, be substituted therefor.
B is a base or supporting block. sents the structure to be supported'.
C repre- D is the movable shield by which the frozen earth is prevented from coming in contact with the post A.
E represents the earth between the surface and the lowest limit of the frost.
F F are elastic rings or bearings, which are interposed between the post and shield, to prevent the action of the shield from being transmitted to the post. The bearings F are rigidly attached to the shield D by bolts a a.
Gr is a stationary shield or water shed, which serves to prevent water from entering 6o the shield D. The shield G is connected with the post A by bolts b b.
H is apacking, by which water is excluded from the post A.
It is obvious that as the lower end of the shield D extends below the frost-line in the earth and the upper end projects above the surface it is impossible for the upheaval of the eartharound the post to affect the post, as the shield D is free to move upward and-7o downwardwith the frozen surface of the earth Without transmitting any movement of the frost to the post A.
It is obvious that my devices may be applied to fence and other posts, the results attained or end accomplished being substan tially the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The combination of post A, inclosiug-shield D, upper and lower packing-rings FF, interposed between said post and said shield, supporting-base B, packing H, interposed between said base and said post, watershed G, and 85 supportingLl-ods b b, all substantially as and for the purpose specified. y
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR S. LESLIE.
