Description

. "UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE.
SILAS R. D IVINE, OFLOCH'SHELDRA KE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BEND ROCK POWDER COMPANY, OF NEW JERSEY.
EXPLOSIVE COMPOUND.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,760, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed August 1, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS R. DIVINE, 0 Loch Sheldrake, Sullivan county, State of New York, .and a citizen of the United States, have invented an Improved Explosive Compound, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention consists in an explosive compound, chiefly for blasting purposes, composed of a solid ingredient-such as chlorate of potash-and a liquid ingredientsuch as oil of turpentinethe said ingredients beinginthemselves incapable of being exploded by percussion, and, when mechanically united, forming the explosive- The theoretical proportions in which the ingredients of my explosive combine most effectively are about eight and one-third parts of chlorate of potash to one part of turpentine; but inasmuch as turpentine possesses a strong aifinity for oxygen, it may be desirable sometimes, when said turpentine, which is aged or hasb'een more or less exposed to the air and has thus become oxidized, is employed as the liquid ingredient, to avoid an unnecessary preponderance,. and hence waste, of oxygen in the finally-prepared compound by decreasing the (No specimens.)
proportion of the chlorate of potash, and thus varying somewhat from the exact theoretical proportions as stated.
It will be understood that either perchlorate or permanganate of potash may be employed as the solid ingredient of my compound.
The ingredients of my compound being in explodible by themselves by percussion, they may be separately handled and transported with safety, and the'consumer can unite them, when and where it is desired to use the explosive, by either mixing them in measured proportions in a suitable vessel or by simply causing the solid to absorb the liquid.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The described explosive compound, composed of a solid ingredient consisting of chlorate of potash, and a liquid ingredient consisting of turpentine, mechanically united, substantially in the proportions and as and for the purposes specified.
SILAS R. DIVINE.
