UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE.
MICHAEL JOHN FITZGERALD, OF FORT WINGATE, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
GAG E-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,637, dated December 4, 183,
' Application filed September 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MTcHAEL J. FITZGER- ALD, of Fort Wingate, in the county of Valencia and Territory of New Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Gage-Cock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new and improved gage-cock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line w 00 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the main body or stock of my improved gage-cock. B represents the conical plug of the cock, and 0 represents a removable cap screwed upon the outer end of the body A, for closing the main passage 0, which extends from end to end entirely through the body A, as shown in Fig. 2. The side passage, d, of the cock intersects the longitudinal passage 0 in the ordinary way, and the plug C is fitted in a transverse conical seat made in the body A at the intersection of the passages 0 and d, so that by giving the plug B a one eighth turn from closed pos'ition-the position shown in Fig. 2-it will open both passage 0 and d, the former through the passage 6, made through the plug, the latter through the said passage 6- and the side passage, 6, made in the plug, which latter passage coincides with the passage (1 when the cock is open, as will be understood from said Fig. 2. The plug B is at each end flush with the stock, as shown at Fig. 3, and is held in its seat in the body A by the nut f, that screws upon the screw-threaded shank f, formed upon the small end of the plug.
Upon the screw-threaded shank 72, formed at the large end of the plug B, is placed the lever D, which is held in place by the nut 71/. The lever D is for convenience in opening and closing the cock, and at its outer end it is provided with the heavy weight D, which serves to normally keep the cock closed, the lever being prevented from being carried downward too far by the stud L, formed upon one side of the body A, which serves to stop the lever D always at the proper position for perfectly closing the cock.
At its rear end the body A is formed, in the ordinary manner, with the screw threaded shank'a, by which the cock may be screwed into a steam boiler, and at b the body A is squared off for the application to the cock of a wrench for attaching the cock to and detach ing it from the steam-boiler. 3
Constructed in this manner, it will be seen that by removing the cap 0 the cock can be easily cleaned, and that by placing the plug B at the intersection of the. passages c d, and forming it with the passages e e, a very slight movement will open and close the cock, so that the weighted lever D can always be relied upon for keeping the cock closed, except when purposely opened to test the water in the boiler.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I11 a gage-cock, the combination, with the stock A, having the stop t and the passage 0, and a side passage, (1, intersecting the latter passage, of the plug B, having the transverse passage 6, and passage 6', intersecting the passage 0, said plug having the weighted lever D D and both of its passages so constructed as to be entirely shut off from both of the passages of the stock in its closed position, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
MICHAEL JOHN FITZGERALD.
