CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,617, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed October 1, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADONIRAM J. CHAPEL, of Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Car-Ooupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved carcoupling, shown as uncoupled, and part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one part of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the coupling, shown as uncoupled. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of oneof the coupling-pins. pin, shown as being raised by'the projection of the draw-head of an adjacent car.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the coupling and uncoupling of cars and promote security in the use of car-couplings.
The invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
A represents the draw-heads, which are secured to the car-frames in the ordinary manner. Upon one side of the forward end of each draw-head A is formed a projection, B, the forward end of which is beveled upon the upper, lower, and outer sides, to cause it to enter the recess 0, formed in the other side of the forward end of each draw-head A. The mouth of the recess 0 is made hopper shape, to cause the projection B of an adjacent car to enter the said recess readily when the cars are run togetherl Through each draw-head A is formed a rectangular hole, D, to receive the coupling-pin E, which is also made rectangular. The upper part of the hole D is made in such a position that one-half of the said hole will be over and will enter the recess '0, while a the other half will be in the solid body of the draw-head A, and will form a groove at the inner side of the said recess. The pin-hole D extends through the lower art of the said draw-head, the lower part of t c said hole being only half the size of the upper part. The lower part of the coupling-pin E is halved, as

The upper forward part of the inner side of the projection B is cut away to form an inclined shoulder, G, which, as the cars are run together, engages with the inclined shoulder F of the pin E, raises the said pin, and allows its thicker upper part to drop through the groove H, formed in the inner side of the projection B, at the rear end of the inclined shoulder G, coupling the cars automatically. Upon the lower end of the coupling-pin E are formed eyes I, to receive the inner ends of the levers J, which are fulcrumed to the lower end of hangers K, attached at their upper ends to the sides of the draw-heads A. The outer ends of the levers J extend to the sides of the cars, so that the said levers can be operated from the sides of the track to raise the pins E and uncouple the cars. This arrangement can be used upon passenger-cars and upon freightcars as may be desired. The upper ends of the pins E have heads formed upon them to prevent them from dropping through the draw-heads A, and in the said upper ends are formed screw-holes, into which are screwed the ends of rods L, or to the said ends are otherwise secured the ends of rods or chains. The rods or chains L extend to the tops of the cars, so that the pins E can be raised and the cars uncoupled from the top of a freight-car. The projection 13 can be strengthened, if desired, by angular ribs M, formed upon their upper and outer sides, and which enter corresponding grooves in the recess 0 of the draw-head of an adjacent car.
In the lower side of the draw-head A, at the inner end of the recess 0, is formed an opening, N, so that the entering projection B will push out any snow and ice that may be in the said recess,- thus adapting the said coupling to work successfully in winter.
