UNITED STATES WILLIAM F. VEBER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF BOWLING GREEN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES D. YONKER, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-FILLING CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,585, dated December 4, 1883,
Application filed September 27, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, W. F. VEBEE, of'Bowling Green, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Filling Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being ,had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication, Ain which- The ligure represents a vertical central section through a coal-oil can or box having a screw-threaded cap, a tube appliedthereto, and a shut-off cock, also showing a fixed pipe extending to a point near the bottom of the vessel and valves.
This invention relates to portable vessels which are adapted to contain what is known as burning-duid, coal-oil, and other light hydrocarbon oils which are inflammable when oxygen or air is brought in contact with them and a dame is applied.
The object of my invention is to avoid the danger which always attends the filling of a lamp wherein light hydrocarbon uid is used; and it consists in the novel device, which will be fully described, when the following description is considered in connection with the annexed drawing.
The can or vessel A is adapted to contain the light hydrocarbon fluid which is now used for illumination. This can is provided with the screw-threaded cap, which should fit gastight, and for this purpose it is provided with an india-rubber gasket.
The vessel which I show in the annexed drawing has a cone-shaped top, A', having a shoulder, a, rising from which is aspur-neck, b, and on this neck is formed a male screwthread adapted to receive a `female screwthreaded cap, B, having a tube, c, to which a valve, B', is applied, which will close gastight. On this tube c aexible tube, C, is applied having a mouth-piece, C.
G designates a rigid tube, which is permanently fixed gas-tight to the top of the vessel A, and is provided with a valve, lu. The
lower end of this tube extends nearly to" the bottom of said vessel. The upper end of this tube protrudes above the top of the vessel, and has applied to it' a flexible tube, T, having a nozzle, t, on its free end.
The operation is as follows: The can being full of fluid, the nozzlet of the tube T is introduced into a lamp, and the fluid from said vessel is forced from the can into the lamp by blowing through the tube. c. It will be observed that I apply to the cap of the can a blowing-tube having a valve, whichA will prevent the evaporation of the iiuid; also, that I apply to the outlet-tube another valve, o, which will also prevent the evaporation of fluid from the vessel A. By blowing from the lungs through the iiexible tube c, which is applied to the top of the vessel A, and opening both of the valves, the liuid in said vessel can be caused to iiow into a lamp peg or body. Then by closing the two valves the vaporization of the oil in the can is prevented.
Having described my invention, I claim- In a filling-can, the screw-threaded cap having a rigid tube, c, provided with a valve, B, and a flexible tube for, the induction of air, `in combination with the tube G, having a regulating-valve, o, the iiexible tube T, and nozzle t, applied to this latter, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. VEBER.
