STEAM-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,554, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed June 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS PIDGEON, of Saugerties, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Steam-Plow, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to increase the traction of the plow and to facilitate the steering of the plow.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved steam-plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same parts being broken off. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the same.
The platform or frame B is supported by axles of four large traction-wheels, A, mounted upon independent axles, and provided on the peripheries with a series of transverse strips or ribs, a, for the purpose of increasing the grip of these wheels on the ground. A large cog-wheel, G, is made integral with the outer end-of each wheel A, and with each cog-wheel O a pinion, D, engages, mounted rigidly on a crank-shaft, d, j ournaled in suitable short standards or supports, 0, on the frame B. The cranks are connected by connecting-rods E with the opposite ends of piston-rods F pass ing longitudinally through cylindersG on the platform, these rods F being attached to pistons in the cylinders on each side of the frame B, one set of pistons being used to operate The wheels on each side of the frame will thus be operated independently of the wheels on the other side by separate pistons and cylinders. provided with steps 6, reach from the ends of the platform over the wheels to the boiler, to permit the engineer to reach the valve-levers f, which can be, of any desired kind. Boxes J J for fuel and water rest on the upper ends of the platforms I at each side of the boiler. A bar, K, of the length of the platform B, is held to each end of each side of the frame B by a bolt, 9, passing through a longitudinal slot, is, in the ends of the bars K. These bars K are connected by transverse bars L, hinged to their free ends. To these bars L, the plows M are attached, the plows being below the bar. In the example shown six plows are at tached to each bar L; but more orless may be used, as may be desired. Chains Z are attached to the slotted ends of the bars K, pass around 6 5 grooved guide-pulleys 'm, pivoted horizontally in the corners of the frame B, and are attached to vertical shafts N on the ends of the platform, which shafts are provided with hand-wheels n and with ratchet-wheels and pawls. shaft, N, is provided at each end of the platform B. Chains O are attached to the bars L and pass over grooved guide-pulleys o to windlasses P 011 the ends of the platform, to which windlasses the chains 0 are attached.
The operation is as follows: The plow-frame can be propelled forward or backward,as may be desired. At that end at which is the forward end of the plow-frame at the time, the bar L is raised by winding thechain O on the windlasses P, so that the plows M, attached to this bar, will beraised so high that they clear the ground. The bar L at the rear end of the plow-frame is lowered, so that its plows can enter the ground and will dig up the same. The wheels Ahave sufficient grip in the gound to draw the plows M throughthe ground. If the plow is to be guided in one direction or the other, one of the chains m at the forward end of the plow is wound on its shaft N,whereby one of the bars K will be moved toward the forward end of the plow-frame in advance of thecorresponding bar, K, on the opposite side of the plowframe. Thereby the bar L" will be inclined toward the end of the plow-frame in the horizontal plane. If the plow frame is to be guided toward the right, the bars K of the plows that are digging are so adjusted that the bar on the One right-hand side of a person standing on the plow-frame and looking forward will be in ad- Vance of the corresponding bar K on the left-' hand' side, and the right-hand end of the corresponding bar L will be nearer the tractionwheels than the left-hand end. This will defleet the forward end of the plow-frame to the right. In a similar manner the plow-frame can be guided toward the left. The plow can be guided from either end, but must always be guided by the plows at the rear end at the time. If desired, that end of the bar L farthest from the traction-wheels can be raised higher than the end nearest the traction -wheels to facilitate steering. Likewise steering can be facilitated by operating the wheels on that side only of the plow-frame from which the plow is moving while being steered.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A steam-plow having a gang of plows attached to a frame, either side of which frame is adapted to be moved longitudinally in advance of the opposite side, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A stea1n-plow having a gang of plows at each end, the said plows being attached to frames, the side bars of which are adapted to be adjusted longitudinally in respect to the opposite side bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
3. In a steam-plow, the combination, with. the main frame, of a jointed plow-frame pivoted to the main frame by sliding connections, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby either side bar of said plow-frame is adapted to be moved forward in advance of the opposite side bar, as set forth.
4. In a steam-plow, the combination, with the main frame, of a longitudinally-sliding plow-frame pivoted to the same,and having a transverse bar carrying plows hinged to the ends of its side bars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a steam-plow, the combination, with the main frame, of a longitudinally-adjustable plow-frame pivoted to the main frame, and having its transverse bar at the free end hinged to the end of the side bars, plows attached to the transverse bar, and of devices for moving one side bar in advance of the other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a steam-plow, the combination, with the main frame, of a plow-frame having its transverse bar hinged to the ends of the side bar and carrying a gang of plows, and means, substantially as described, for vertically adj usting said frame and moving one of its said.

7. In a steam-plow, the combination, with the platform B, of the side bars, K, provided with slots k, the bolts 9, the transverse bars L, hinged to the ends of the side bars, K, the plows M, attached to the bars L, the chains Z, the guide-pulleys m, and the shaft N, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a steam-plow, the combination, with the frame 13, of the side bars, K, pivoted to the same, the transverse bars L, hinged to the side bars, the plows M, attached to the transverse bars L, the chains 0, the guide-pulleys 0, and the windl asses I, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
