Description

, 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' nueu'srus o. PALMER, on UTIOA, NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC ANNUNCIATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,552, dated December 4, 1883.
Application fileil November 4, 1882. (No modeLl I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS O. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Annunciators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to electric annunciators for hotels, burglar-alarms, &c.; and it consists in the construction of the indicator and mechanism for operating the same, hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying my invention, the indicator being in position to expose its face to view. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same device, the indicator being turned so that its face is unexposed. Fig. 3 is a front view, and
Fig. 4 a side View, the indicator being in position shown in Fig. 1, a part of the magnet being broken away in Fig. 4.
The frame, having the base A and vertical part B, is such as is adapted to be fixed in the location or case in which the device is to be placed and for supporting the operating parts.
Inthe base A is fixed, in suitable position, an
electro-magnet, 0. To the vertical part B is pivoted one end of a lever, l), as shown, having fixed thereto an armature, E, in proper relation-to the poles of the magnet C. At the other end of the lever D is formed a hook or latch, F. This hook or latch has an upper beveled or inclined plane, a, and a vertical plane or surface, b, for a catch. To the base I A is fixed a vertical standard, G, to which is pivoted the indicator or plate H. This plate is so formed as to have fixed thereto, or as parts of the same piece of metal therewith, projections c and d at right angles to the plane of the plate, by which the plate is pivoted on the standard G, so as to swing about a vertical central line. A wire or rod, I, or its equivalent, is fastened to the plate H, by which there is an arm, 6, above the plate and about parallel to the plane thereof, and an arm, f, below the'plate. The arm f is bent or formed as shown, so that a part thereof extends tothe standard, and the other end, 2', bearing against the rod I. This spring acts to swing the plate H and rod I, so as to carry the same from position illustrated in Fig. 2 to position shown in Fig. 1.
The operation is as follows: The plate or indicator H being in position to present its edge to the front-that is, so that its face will not be exposed to view-and the arm 6 resting in the hook or latch F and being held thereby, when an electric current is sent through the coils of the magnet, the armature attracted to the magnet, and the outer end of the lever D carried downward, the arm 6 is released from the hook or catch F and the spring 9! swings the plate or indicator H into position, whereby its face is parallel with the front and brought to view. By means of the arm f the plate H is swung back to its former position and the arm 6 slides over the inclined plane a, pressing the lever D and latch F downward, and is caught by this latch when thrown upward by the spring J, the electric circuit having been broken, and hence the armature and lever not being drawn toward the magnet.
Instead of putting the figure j or other mark or sign directly on the face of the plate H, I form the same on a separate plate or card, K, which may be held to plate H by means of small projections or fingers is at the bottom and sides of the plate H. These projections or fingers may be cut out and bent up from the same piece of metal of which is the plate H. The card K may be readily slid into place on the plate H, or readily removed and another having a different number or mark thereon substituted therefor.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the plate H, having projections cand cl, standard G, arm 0, spring g, and latch F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the plate H, having sea,
projections c and (1, vertical standard G, and arm f, located and formed substantially as described.
3. In an electric annunciator, the combination of these elements, namely: a plate or indicator, H, pivoted to swing about a vertical standard, and having projections or fingers k at the lower and side edges thereof, and aseparable card, K, substantially as specified.
4:. In an electric annunciator, the combina tion of these elements, namely: an el.ectro magnet, an armature pivoted in such a manner as to have movements in a vertical direction, a latch attached to said armature, a plate pivoted in such a manner as to swing about a vertical line, an arm attached to said plate to engage with said latch, a spring adapted to swing; said plate when said arm is released by the latch, and a removable card on said plate, substantially as set forth.
