Be it known that I, ARTEMAS L. DAWSON, of Elk Point, in the county of Union, Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and useful Machine for Attaching Metal Collars to Lamps; and I hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the It is intended with thismachine to provide a means for attaching collars to lamps, the collars being of the kind and attached in the manner described in my Letters Patent No. 264, 633, which were granted to me September 19, 1882, and in my pending application, iiled in the United States Patent Office at Washington, April 30, 1883, (Serial No. 93,869.)
In the. drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device having various parts broken away to show the internal construction, and Fig. `2, a vertical central section of the same, also showing the mechanism underneath by which the follower is controlled.

Inserted in the other end of the hollow shaft A are the blades C, of metal, each made sufficiently broad to cause its edges to project through the slots formed to admit them, one on each side of the shaft, the two being directly opposite toeach other. The rod` I is coniinedin its movement within the shaft by means of a pin, a, which passesV through a slot, m, in the said rod and also through the shaft near its rear internal extremity, dividing the latter into two equal parts..
K is a lever of the second class, having its fulcrum at x, within a slotted projection from the edge of the frame of the device. Owing to the position of the pin a, which passes through the rod I, the said rod will be caused to revolve with the shaft when such revolution is produced, an d, since its movement within thelatter is to be controlled by means of the leverK, it must be connected thereto in a manner that will permit its revolution. This is effected by means of a dat pin, l, passing through a hole provided for the purpose in the body of the lever and rigidly secured withina slot in the extremity of the rod. The head lc of the pin is sufficiently large to prevent its slipping through the hole in the body of the lever, and is made to revolve within a socket for-med underneaththe cap z' and in the top of the hole in the lever. The lever K is provided with a pin, b, extending through the body of the said lever near the handle-thereof, and having its movement within a groove, m',
formed in the extremity of the frame of the device.
As before stated, the device is for the pur- IOO pose of firmly attaching collars to neckless lamp-bodies, and its mode of` operation is as follows: L is a metal plate provided with an orifice to admit the burnisher r. The said oriiice is provided with an annular projection or flange, h, around its forward edge, upon which the collar to be attached fits, and is thus held inposition, and from thebase of which the outer face of the plate L flares outward sufficiently to form a seat for the rim of the collar. When a collar is to be attached, it is placed upon the annular projection around the orifice in the plate L, when the collarless lamp-body is suitably placed against the wall of the follower D, with the center of its opening directly opposite that of the plate L, and moved by means of the follower (controlled by mechanism hereinafter described) forward until the projecting portion of the collar enters the opening in the lamp-body. During this time the shaft A is rapidly revolving, wherefore'the burnishers 1' cannot occupy the position shown in the drawings, where they would spread out the projection on the collar before it enters the lamp, but are made to lie within the haring opening in the plate L, and this is effected by means of the lever M, pivoted to one hub of the loose collar N, which incloses a second collar, N', rigidly secured to the shaft, so that the latter, which is adjustably confined within its bearings u o, may be moved back until the burnishers occupy the position just described, and forward when desired. This forward movement of the shaft is caused to take place as soon as the lamp-body has so far been made to approach the collar that the projection of the latter enters the orice in the said lampbody, when the arms E, which, owing to the centrifugal force generated by the revolution of the shaft, diverge as far as the chain H will permit, are made to approach each other by the action of the lever I, thus to spread out the burnishers r, which in turn spread the projection of the lamp-collar against the inner edge of the opening in the lamp-body. A suitable stop, a, is provided for the lever M in the head of a pin driven into the crosspiece a.
It frequently occurs in the manufacture of lamp-bodies, especially when they are composed of glass, that there will be inequality of ,its thickness in different parts, and when this occurs in the part against which the burnishers act, unless they were given, in addition to their longitudinal movement with the shaft itself, an independent longitudinally-reciprocating motion withinl narrow limits, it is quite evident that, owing to the strain brought to bear, there would arise considerable liability to breakage in attaching the collars. I t is to obviate this and permit an automatic movement that the arms E and transverse plate s are made to operate as hereinbefore described.
The follower D consists of the base f, having its lateral edges chamfered to fit and slide within the sides of the base of the machine,
which consist of strips likewise chamfered on their under and inner sides to receive the said base of the said follower and of the upright g, to receive which a part of the base f is cut away, leaving two longitudinally-projecting` arms, one on each side, which, being mere prolongations of the chamfered edges which slide between the sides of the base of the device, prepared in like manner to receive them, as before stated, are to serve the purpose of affording greater smoothness in the motion of and security to the follower D. The upright is suitably braced, as shown at y. A clamp, e, presses the said follower to a strap` or endless band, O, by means of bolts and nuts d, of which but one is shown in the sectional view of the drawings. To change the position of the follower upon the endless band O, in order that the various lengths of lamp-bodies may be accommodated between the face of the follower and the plate L, to any position different from that in which the device has been operating, it is only necessary to unscrew the nuts by a few turns, when a light tap upon the ends of the bolts d will loosen the clamp e, and' thus free the follower from the strap and permit its adjustment.

The operator will hold the levers K and M one in each hand to control the action of the burnishers, and with his foot in the stirrup IOO c, as the latter is forced down, move the follower forward till the burnishers have done their work, when the spring W' forces it back to make ready for another operation, and the burnishers are made to collapse by allowing to the centrifugal force full play upon the arms E in forcing the rod I, and thereby the chain G, inward.
T is a strip secured to the lever M and passing through a slot in the lever K, which, while it permits independent movement of the levers, is provided with a pin, z, to afford a convenient stop for the lever K. This strip T is secured to the under side of the lever M, near the handle thereof, as being the most convenient place to secure it.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters' Patent, is-
' 1. In a machine for attaching collars to neckless lamp-bodies, the combination of the following elements, viz: a suitable frame for supporting the operating mechanism, a rotary shaft carrying upon one extremity pivoted burnishers r, adapted, when brought together, to pass through the collar to be attached, mechanism for bringing the said burnishers together, and mechanismfor spreading the said IIO burnishers apart for the purpose of turning up the inner end of the collar against the inner surface of thelamp-body, all substantially as described.
2. In a machine for attaching collarsto neckless lamp-bodies, the combination of the following elements, viz: a frame 4for supporting th e operating mechanism, a rotary shaft mounted in the said frame, a pair of burnishers, 1", pivotally connected to the said shaft and projecting beyond the end of the same, mechanism for revolving the said shaft with the burnishers, mechanism tending automatically to preventthe burnishers from spreadingrwhereby they may be passed through the collar, and mechanism for spreading the said burnishers in opposition to the 4said automatic mechanv ism, all substantially as described.
3. In amachine for attaching collars to neckless lamp-bodies, the combination of the following elements: a frame for supporting the operating mechanism, a rotary shaft mounted within the said frame, a pair of burnishers, r, pivotally connected to the said shaft and projecting beyond the end of the same, mechanism for rotating the said shaft and burnishers, mechanism operating automatically to prevent the saidburnishersfrom spreadingapart,mech anism for imparting to the said burnishers an independent longitudinally-reciprocating motion automatically, and mechanism for spreading the said burnishers apart at'will, all substantially as described.
4. In a machine for attaching collars to neckless lamp-bodies, the hollouT shaft A, supported in suitable bearings, transverse plate s, resting in slots in the said shaft and moving on a pivot passing through the said plate and through the shaft, and arms t, pivotally secured to the said plate at each end, one on each face thereof, the said arms expanding toward their other extremities into plates C, and at their said extremities forming burnishers r, in combination with mechanism for revolving the said shaft, and with mechanism for spreading apart the said burnishers at will, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a machine for attaching collars to neckless lamp bodies, the hollow sh aft A, supported in suitable bearings, the transverse plate s, resting in slots in the said shaft, and moving on a pivot passing through the said plate and through the shaft, arms t, pivotally secured to the said plate toward each end, and on opposite faces thereof, the said arms expanding toward their other extremities into plates C, and at their said extremities forming burnishers r, links q, each pivotally secured at one end to a plate, G, arms E, pivoted to the outer ends of the links and having their fulcrums in slots p of a collar, F, on the shaft, rod I, moving longitudinally within the shaft, chain or band G, connecting the rod I with the arms E, lever K, to operate the said rod, and mechanism for revolving the said shaft, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a machine for attaching collars to neckless lamp-bodies, the combination of the following elements: a frameto carry the operating mechanism,thehollow shaft A, supported in bearings a t, transverse plate s, resting in slots inthe shaft and moving on a pivot passing through the said plate and through the said shaft, arms t, pivotally secured to the said plate toward each end and on opposite faces thereof, the said arms expanding toward their outer extremities into platesC, and at their said extremities forming burnishers r, plate L, provided with an orice to admit the passage of the burnishers fr, and made flaring on its outer face and provided with the annular projection I1., links g, each pivotally secured at one end to. a plate, C, arms E, pivoted to the outer ends of the links, and having their fulcrums in slots p in a collar, F, on the shaft, chain or band I, collar H, having pulleys o, collars -N and N, lever M, secured to the hub of the said collar N, rod I, slotted near its outer extremity and conned in its movement by means of a pin, n, across the interior of the shaft nearits rear end, and through the slot fm, lever K, connected to the said rod by means of the pin Z, having the head K to revolve in the socket underneath the cup c', driving-wheel B, follower D, moving in suitable guides in rh e frame, endless band or strap O, clamp e, and bolt d, provided with a nut, pulleys P, sectoralshaped block R, lever S, attached at one end to the said block, and having hinged atthe other a bar, S, provided with a stirrup, o, and the spring W, as and for the purpose set forth.
