tlnirnn STATES PATENT OFFI E.
ALVIN o SEYMOUR, or FALL nivnn, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROAD-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,454, dated December 4, 1883.
' Application filed May 15, 1883. No model.)
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN O. SEYMoUR, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Road-Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in plows for ditching and forming the bed of roads, and is also peculiarly well adapted for clearing the gutters of streets from snow.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the plow and the car riage for supporting and operating the same, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved road-plow. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the plow and carriage, showing a pair of shafts secured to the My improved plow differs materially from ordinary plows, in that the mold-board is carried across and beyond the width of the carriage, and is shaped so as to deposit the earth or other material over the road or street in such a manner that the form of the roadbed is preserved. It also differs from the ordinary road or snow scraper, in that it is provided with a plowshare for cutting the ditch of the road or lifting the snow from the gutters of the streets.
In the drawings, A represents the plowshare B, the extended mold-board; G, the hinged extension of the mold-board beyond the carriage. D is the pivot or hinge on which the extension of the mold-board is secured. E is the bar by which the free end of the mold-board O is supported. F is a hinged frame to which the mold-board B is secured.-
This frame is provided with the wheel f, having an adjustable bearing, so that the plowshare and mold-board can be raised or lowered. This frame F, and with the same the plowshare A and mold-board B, can be raised clear off from the ground or raised "just above the ground. by means of the bellcrank lever G, and the long arm of the bellcrank lever G can be secured so as to hold the plow and mold-board off from the ground by a pin entering the latch g, or by any other of the well-known means usually employed for such purpose. X is a frame forming a platform, which is supported on the wheels H H. A seat, I, is provided for the driver,
and K is a step to facilitate the mounting of the platform. L L are a pair of shafts; but
a pole may be used-in their stead.
On examination of Fig. 1 it will be observed that the plow will readily enter the soil or snow and raise the same upward. In Fig. 3 theoblique direction of the mold-board is shown, and in Fig. 2 the mold-board is shown to form a horizontal line at b, and then curve upward, ending in an inclined line at b. The object of this form is to raise the earth out of the ditch or the snow from the gutter and deposit the same evenly over the street or road. The form of the lower edge of the mold-board should be, therefore, the form of the desired road-bed.
The action is as follows: The snow or earth being raised by the plow is carried sidewise, and is by the mold board evened and shaped at the same time as it is delivered, making the road smooth and even. WVhen moving from or to the work, the hinged end 0 of the mold-board is raised, as is shown in Fig. 2 in broken lines.
I am aware that road-plows have been provided with obliquely extended moldboards provided with hinged sections, and I do not claim such construction, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the platform X, and wheels H H, and carriage-frame, of the hinged frame F, provided with the wheel f, the plowshare A, and the oblique mold-board B, operated by the bell-eranklever G, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a road-plow, the combination, with the mold-board extending laterally, and having its lower edge partly straight, as at b, and partly inclined upward, as at b, of the hinged section 0, connected to the upper end of the inclined portion and forming an upwardly-inclined extension thereof, capable of being raised beyond the main portion, the
Wheeled carrying-fran1e, mechanism for rais- I anism for raising and lowering the mold-board ing and lowering the plowshare and moldboard, and devices for supporting the hinged section in line with the inclined portion, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the frame X, wheels H H, and hinged frame F, of the plowshare attached to said hinged frame, the moldboard 13, arranged obliquely in front of the wheels and having a portion of its lower edge inclined upwardly, as at b, the hinged extension 0, attached to said mold-board, and mechand its extension, substantially as described.
4:. A road-plow provided with a mold-board I 5 having a portion of its edge straight, as at b, and an extended portion inclined upwardly from said straight portion, as at b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALVIN G. SEYMOUR.
