UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL A. W. LOUIS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,426, datedIDecem'ber 4, 1883.
Application filed June 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Beit known that I, MICHAEL A.W. LUIs,of
' Washington, in the District of Columbia, have hereinafter.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, andexact de scription thereof.
My invention relates to the ventilation of rooms, cars, or other apartments through their window-sashes, and will be fully described In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window-frame and its sashes with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 .is a cross-section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a frame and its sashes, and Fig 5 is a detail section showing a modification of my device, and Figs. 4 and 6 show other modifications.
A is the window-frame; B, the upper sash,
and O the lower sash. D is a perforated plate,
which is preferably let into'the upper edge 'of the lower sash, which latter is also perforated, as at a a. E is another perforated "plate, and this latter is slotted, as at b, to take shouldered screws 0, by which it is secured to plate D in such a manner that it may play longitudinally to close the perforations a a either partly or entirely, according to the amount of airthat it is desired to admit to the room. I may interposea thin layer of rubber between the two plates to insure a tight joint, or they may both have rubber vulcanized upon their adjacent surfases; and I secure the lower plate to the upper sash by a hinge or hinges, d, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or I may hinge it to the front edge of the lower sash, as in Fig. 4; and instead of using the entire plate D, I may only use a narrow strip of metal, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, or I may dispense with the lower plate entirely, and hinge plate E directly to the lower sash by staples, as in Fig. 6; but in all the modifications it is necessary to make pro vision for adjusting the plate E horizontally, that the amount of draft through the perf0rations may be regulated.
In the drawings the perforations in the sashes are shown as vertical; but it may be well to slant them so that the rush of air will be out toward the center of the apartment. The sash-perforations may be between the sashes, if desired, or may begin in the lower sash and slant through the upper sash; but this is immaterial.
By my device school-rooms, halls. and bedrooms may be well ventilated, and their temperature regulated with very little expense and Without the admitted air doing any damage, for it first has to encounter the heated air in the upper part of the room, and by the time it falls will have been warmed.
In windows that are to be locked I propose instead of using a continuous plate or plates to divide them, or to use two sets of short plates, interposing the locks between their adjacent ends, and Where the windows are so high that the ventilators cannot be easily reached, I propose to slide the plate E by means of cords leading from it over pulleys or through staples.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a window-sash, perforated as described, with a perforated plate hinged thereto and adapted to move longitudinally, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand on this 22d day of May, 1883, in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL A. W. LOUIS.
