Description

(N0 Model 1 .J. B. mason; 4 I APPARAT FOR POLISHING SHEETS OPZYLONITE, m.
Patented Nov. 27, 1883.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JARVIS B. E-DSON, OF ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPARATUS FOR POLISHING SHEETS OF ZYLONITE, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,239, dated November 27, 18 83.
Application filed April 28, 1883. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JARVIS B. Ensox, of the town of' Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Polishing Sheets of Zylonite or similar Substances, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention has for its object the polishing or finishing in a very'smooth condition the surface of sheets of zylonite or similar compounds chiefly formed of pyroxyline or cellulose substances; and the invention consists in slightly'dissolving the surface of the-sheet by some solvent-as collodion, or any of the Wellknown solvents of such substancesand then subjecting the said surface to pressure in contact with ahighly-polished surface as a plate of glasswhich, as the pressure advances, gradually eXpels the air and closely compresses the surface of this partially-dissolved surface and sets it in a closely-finished condition, until it is as highly polished as the glass or finishing surface with which it has been in contact while under pressure.
Tn the drawings at Figure l is represented a section of a pair of pressure-rolls, between which are represented a sheet of the material to be polished and the polishing-plate. At Fig; 2 is a similar transverse section of the rolls, but with the polishing-surfacemade in any cylindrical form, so as to be continuous in its operation instead of intermittent, as in the other figure. I
At A B are represented a pair of rolls, one or bot-h of whiclrmay be of rubber or some elastic substance, so that a plate of glass may be passed between them without fracture.
At C is represented a sheet of or similar substance, which may be fed from a roll, as at D; andat E is adistributing device, which may be a roller, as represented; or it may be atube with jets to distribute some solvcn tas col1odion-upon the surface of the sheet of zylonite, and immediately before its contact 7 with the polishing-plate F, which is preferabl y aplate of glass, as at present it seems to be the best material which I have found for the purpose, and which, when passed betweeua p: Jr of rolls in contact with the said partiallydissolved surface of the sheet ot'zylonite, has
the zylonite the effect, as the pressure advances, of expelcylinder of glass, as at G, is mounted between the rolls, so that the operation may be perwhere long sheets of the zylonite were formed as in a web.
1t is evident that if figures of designs of any kind be formed either on the plate or cylinder of glass, as by the process of engraving or etching, corresponding figures will also be formed on the surface of the zylonite sheet, so that any desired ornamentation may be produced at the same time that the surface is being finished or polished. I
It is evident that vitrified surfaces mounted upon plates of metal may be used in place of the plate F or cylinder G, and it may be possible by some process, as by electroplating or in some other manner, to finish plates of metal so that their surfaces may be as highly polished as plates of glass, in which case they could be used in the same manner; but the essence of the invention consists in compressing the partially-dissolved surface of a sheet with a highly-polished surface, for the purpose of expelling the air and so compressing polished condition.
From the foregoing it will be perceived that my invention differs from that contained in Patent No. 221, 070, which is hereby disclaimed.
I therefore claiming sheets of zylonite or similar substances by first slightly dissolving their surfaces by any of the well-known solvents for such purpose, and then subjecting the same to pressure, with the slightly-dissolved surface in contact with the surface of a highly-polished substance such as glassin the manner set forth, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a pair of compress, ing-rolls adapted for receiving a sheet of zylo-v of zylon'ite or a similar substance in contactthe surface as to give it a highly finished or ling the air from the composition, and at the used, except that instead of a plate of glass at formed continuously, as would be required 1. The within-described process of polish IOO nite or similar substance, at distributing device forapp1ying thesolvent,audepolishing-piate, In witness whereof I have hereunto suba polishing-cylinder interposed between the as hereinhefore set forth. scribed my name and affixed my sea-1 in the 3. The combination of the pressure-1'01 ls and presence of rye subscribing witnesses.
