GAS-BURNING PUDDLING-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of LettersuPatent No. 289,201, dated November :27, 1883,
Application filed Seiiember 1l, 1883. (No model.) Y
` To all/Z whom it may concern:
scription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved gas-burning puddling-furnace, show-` ing a part of the casing broken away. Fig.
`2 is a side view of the same, showing the side of the casing broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view on line m sa, Fig.
kl; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on line y y, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the Similar letters of reference indicate corre spending parts in all the figures.
Myinvention has relation to gas-burning `puddling-furnaces, and has for its object the tion of parts of the same, as will be herein after more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre' sents the body of the furnace 5 B, the bottom plates of the furnace; G, the falsebottom of the same; D, the roof of the furnace; E, the neck of the same; F, the low gas-wall; G, the gas-burn er, extending the full width of the furnace; H, the high gasWall; I, gasChamber; J, hre-bridge; K, liuc-bridge; L, opening in ilue; M, stack of furnace, and N the air-chamber. The above-mentioned parts are old, and form no part of my present invention.
O represents a partition-wall, which divides the space between the false bottom C and the bottom of the furnace, and also theainchanr ber proper, N, into two spaces, A A, the space A being open at its outer end for the admis` sion of cold air.
P indicates a ilue which leads from the stack of the furnace over the roof of the furnace and down into the hot-air space A', the flue P serving to bring hot products of combustion from the stack down into the hot-air space A'.
Q Q indicate dampers which cover open` ings R R in the rear end of the bottom plates of the furnace, the damper Q regulating the amount of hot air fed through the hot-air flue A', while the damper Q regulates the amount of cold air fed through the cold-air flue A.
From the foregoing description, takenAJ in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my improved gas-burning puddling-furnace will readily be understood without requiring further explana tion. It will be s'een that by means of the dampers Q Q, I am enabled to regulate the amount of hot or cold air necessary for the proper combustion of the gas, thereby effecting a great saving ofgas, and also rendering the heat from the burners of an even quality and character.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a gas-burning puddling-furnace of substantially the described construction, the combination of the division-wall 0, dividing the air-chamber into two flues or spaces, A and A, `flue P, leading from the stack of the furnace to the hot-air flue A', and dampers Q Q', regulating the amount of hot and cold air fed through the flues A A into the gas-chamber, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH C. VILLIAMS.
