3 Claims. (Cl. 273-189) This invention has to do with golf instruction or training devices.

An object of my invention is to provide a novel golf instruction or training device designed to assist a person in developing and practicing a correct swing, particularly as regards the follow-through portion of the swing. Another object is to provide such a device which assists a person in maintaining a correct stance while going through the motions of the golf swing.

More particularly it is an object to provide a device of the type indicated having means for guiding the arms of the golfer forwardly along the proposed line of flight of the ball beyond the point Where the ball is struck in a manner to preclude a person from swinging around too close to the body on an arc inside of the intended path of the ball during the portion of the swing after the ball is struck.

A further object is to provide a device such as indicated which is readily adjustable to various-sized persons, and also for use by either rightor left-handed persons.

Still another object is to provide a collapsible golf training aid of a portable nature which is simple in construction and relatively inexpensive.

These and other objects will be apparent from the drawing and the following description. Referring to the drawing:

Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a device embodying the invention showing a person using the device.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale on line '33 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

More particularly describing the invention, 11 designates a base shown as having four straight sections, or legs 12, extending in the form of a cross. The base is provided with a central, vertical projection or stud 14 of cylindrical shape which serves to support a standard, designated 15, in vertical position. The standard has a lower section 16 made of tubing which receives the stud 14. A set screw 17 serves to secure the parts. The standard also includes an intermediate section 20 and an upper section 21, which are telescopically related, as is section 20 with section 16. 24 and 25, respectively. Certain of the holes may be provided with screw threads, while others need not, to receive the screws. It will be apparent that with the construction outlined the standard is readily adjustable as to height.

At the upper end of the standard is a fitting 28 which has an opening 30 therethrough to receive an arm 31. A set screw 32 is provided for securing the arm in adjusted position, and, if desired, the arm may be provided with a series of indentations 33 in its upper surface to provide a seat for the screw. 2 verging sides 35 so that, in consequence, the arm 31 is mounted for limited pivotal movement with respect to the fitting.

At its outer end arm 31 is provided with a noncircular opening 38 which is shown as square in cross-section. This receives either end portion of a double pin 40 forming part of a guide means, designated 41. The guide means includes a rod 42 which is attached to and extends from the center of pin 40 in an S-shaped curved section 45 to a relatively straight section 46. This member is adapted to be disposed adjacent the body of the person using the device substantially at the waist line as best seen in Fig. l. A forward guide section, designated 48, is provided which extends forwardly with respect to the line of flight of a ball to be struck by a person using the device. The part 48 provides a relatively flat surface 50 of substantial area as a guide surface for the arms of the player. Section 48 may be made of a single plate-like member, or it may be formed by a rod or wire frame, designated 51, covered with a fabric or plastic sheet 52.

Referring to Fig. 1, a right-handed person using the device stands upon one leg of the base as shown so that the standard 15 is adjacent the left leg. The guide means 41 is adjusted to be at about waist height, and the section 46 extends across in front of the body of the person while the guide section 48 extends forwardly along the line of flight of the ball. Upon the forward swing, the arms, after striking the ball, must follow along the flight path of the ball for a substantial distance by reason of the guide section 48 which presents surface 50 to the arms, thereby preventing the person from prematurely swinging too closely around his own body on an are inside of the flight of the ball.

It will be apparent that the device may be adjusted for use by a left-handed person by inverting the guide means 41. Also, the device may be readily disassembled into its component parts rendering it compact and readily portable.

Although I have shown and described a preferred form of my invention I contemplate that various changes and modifications can be made herein without departing from the scope of the invention as indicated by the claims.

I claim:

1. A golf training device, comprising a base, an upright standard on said base, a laterally projecting arm carried by said standard at about waist-height of a person, and guide means detachably carried on said arm, said guide means including an elongated rod-like rear portion adapted to extend parallel to the ground across in front of the body of a person using the device and a forward portion extending substantially as a continuation of said rear portion laterally of the body of a person using the device and parallel to the proposed line of flight of a golf ball to be struck by the person, said forward portion presenting a vertical guide face of substantial area for the arms of the person.

2. A device as set forth in claim 1 in Which said arm is mounted on said standard for limited pivotal movement about a vertical axis.

3. A golf training device comprising a base adapted to rest on the ground and presenting a rearwardly projecting relatively fiat section adapted to underlie the forward foot of a person with reference to the direction of intended flight of the golf ball, an upright standard on said base adapted to rise vertically alongside the forward side of the forward leg of the person using the device, said standard being vertically adjustable for the positioning of the same with the upper end thereof at approximately waist-height of the person using the device, guide means carried by the upper end portion of said standard, said guide means including a laterally proj'ecting arm carried by the upper portion of the standard a for limited pivotal movement about a vertical axis, an elongated member extending from the end of said arm rearwardly along the intended line of flight of the ball and across the front of the body of the person using the device, and an arm guide section extending from the end of said arm forwardly therefrom along the line of intended flight of the golf ball and adapted to act as a stroke.
