UNITED Y STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO STRAEHL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FIRE-ESCAP SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,163, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed October 1, 1883. (No model);
To all whom it may concerm- Be it known that I, LEO STRAEHL, of Detroit, in the county of IVayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, "clear, and
exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of fire-escapes, by means of which aperson may lower himself from the upper portion of a building with perfect ease and safety; and the invention consists in the peculiar construe-e tion, arrangements, and combinations of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im-v proved device as in use. Fig. 2 is an elevation.
In the accompanyingv drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a tube, which may be formed solid or in two parts and secured together by suitable screws,
and bent into the form of an S, as shown,
This tube A is provided with studs a, and in these studs I properly journal the grooved friction-wheel B, which has slotted hearings in said studs, and to other studs, 12, I pivotally secure one end of the lever C, the opposite or free end of which is perforated and slips over the screw-stud D, which latter receives upon its outer end the winged nut E.
Upon the lower side of this tube A, I form a loop, 0, into which is rigidly secured one end of the strap F, the opposite end of which is provided with a snaphook, designed to engage with the ring (1 upon the waist-belt G, which is buckled around the person using the 0 device. i
H represents a rope, one end of which is passed through the tube A, and carries upon that end a'hook, I, which is likewise designed to be hooked into the ring 01.
In practice the belt is buckled around the 5 waist of the person desiring to escape from the building, with the ring (I in front, and the strap F and rope hooked into this ring. The loop formed by the rope between the ring d and the tube A is then passed through the proper hook, J, which should be rigidly or firmly screwed into the floor or other convenient part ot the room. The person now lets himself out of the window, and governs the rapidity ing the tube in his hand, as shown'inthe drawings, and compressing the grooved frictionroller upon the rope by means of the lever, and it can readily be seen that the operator can easily stop himself at any desired point. A
This device is simple in its construction, and can readily be rolled up into a small compass and carried in a valise. It will be seen that, independent of the friction device proper, there is a large amount of friction, due to the rope passing twice over the window-sill and around the hook J.
I am aware that S-shaped. tubes with friction devices are not new in fire-escapes, and therefore do not claim, broadly, such construc- 7o tions.
hat I claim as my invention is' In combination with the belt G, strap F, and rope H, the S-shaped tube A, provided with the grooved friction-wheel B, regulating- 7 v lever C, screw -stud D, and nut E, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
