CABLE-RAILWAY CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,189, dated November 27, 1883.

In a former patent, No. 266,198, granted to me on the 17th day of October, 1882, is illustrated a cable-railway car having a grip located centrally beneath the same, which is provided with mechanism whereby the grip may be operated from either platform of the car. In such patent the grip is shown as suspended from beams bolted to the bottom of the car,
' and necessarily, therefore, will partake of the movement of the car upon its springs. This vertical, movement of the gripnecessitates such an enlargement of the cable-tube as will permitit to play freely therein, and makes the cost of construction much greater than it would he were there no vertical movement of the grip. b
The object of my present invention is to provide improved means whereby the grip. may be sustained independent of the carbody, so that it will not be affected by the car-springs, and will therefore have little or no vertical movement. This object I have accomplished by the construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of a cable-car having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2is a view of the car in vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 3 is a detail view, in side elevation, of aportion of the carbottom frame and subjacent parts.
A designates the bottom frame of the carbody, from which depend the hangers a, perforated at their bottom to receive the rods a, suitably connected to the car-frame. These rods (0' pass through the flanges b on the outer side of the j ournal-box frame B, and carry the spiral springs c upon which the car-body is sustained. The front ends of these frames are curved, and to them are connected the end rods, B, and to the rear ends of the box-frames are bolted, as shown at bathe side rods, B.
These several parts B, B, and B connected thus together, form a rigid frame, whichis sustained by the journal-boxes from the ends of the. car-axles. Between the end rods, B, and connected thereto, are held the center rods, B braced by the tie-rods b and carrying the jourrial-blocks G, which support the journal 0 of the grip C. The grip and its operating mechanism is of g the construction set out in Patent No. 266,198, and need not be described in detail here.
From the foregoing construction it will be I seen that the grip, being sustained by the supporting-frame connected to the j ournal-boxes,
- is .not affected by theinotion of the car upon its springs. A further advanl age of this construction is that the weight 01' the grip is borne by the car-axles at the points best suited to sustain the weight. By my improved manner of sustaining the grip, it becomes possi ble to support the grip under the center of the car without cutting the car-body and without the necessity of a very large tube.

in the accompanying drawings the form of grip and operating mechanism shown in my former patent, No. 266,198, it will be understood, of course, that the invention may be used in connection'with other forms of mechanism by which a car is to be connected to a constantly-moving cable. It will also be understood that the details of construction of the supporting-frame may be varied within wide limits without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
