San'Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Eccentric Spring-Brake, of which the following'isa full,clear, andexact description;

, On the aXleA of a car-truck a grooved pulley, B, is mounted, over which an endless chain or wire cable, 0, passes, which also passes over a pulley, D, mounted loosely on a shaft, F, journaled in a frame, E, pivoted to the car-truck or to two arms, F, projecting A pulley, G, is mounted on the shaft F in such a manner that it can turn with and slide on the same. A spring, H, projecting downward from the floor of the car and provided with a slot through which the shaft F can pass, rests against the outer surface of the pulley G and presses the pulley G against the pulley D.
Both these pulleys are provided on the adj oining surfaces with clutching devices, so that when the pulleys are pressed together they will engage with each other, and if the pulley D is revolved it will also revolve the pulley 1 G and the shaft F on which it is mounted.
A wheel, a, mounted on a short axle journaled between two arms projecting downward from the car, is so located that when the axle F is raised it strikes the beveled flange 9 of the pulley G, and moves the pulley G from the pulley D, thereby disengaging the two pulleys. A frame, J, is pivoted to two arms, K; projectingdownward from the floor'of the car, and on the ends of the said frame J rollers J are pivoted, to rest on the free end of the frame E. A chain, L, connected with the usual brake-shaft, passes over a pulley, L, on
the bottom of the car, and the same endof the frame J is connected with a piston-rod, M, connectedwith a piston in a cylinder, M, on the under side of the car, so that the end of the said frame J can be raised either by means of the piston or by means of the chain L, thereby forcing the opposite end, provided On-each end of the shaft F a hub, N, is rigidly mounted and suitably keyed, which hub is provided with a series of short radial cylindrical arms orsp okes, N, each provided with a central aperture for receiving a rod, 0, provided in its outer end with a cylindrical head, 1?, around which headsandarms O powerful spiral springs R are coiled, which are secured to the heads P andrest on the hub. If pressure is exerted 011 the heads I, the stems 0 will be forced into the apertures in the radial arms N an d in the hub. The arms N, with their rods 0 and heads I, are surrounded by a cylindrical easing, S, pro vided with an outer end plate, T, which cylindrical casing or rim is provided in its fiat side with a large central aperture, to permit the shaft F to move up and down,these devices constituting the brake wheels or disks. U, projecting downward from the bottom of the car-floor, rest against the inner sides of the casings S and close the above-mentioned openings" in the same, the plates being provided with longitudinal slots, to permit of vertical movement of the shaft F, which plates keep the dust and dirt out of the casings. The outer rim'of the cylindrical casing S is beveled toward the inside, so that it will not strike against switch-rails, frogs, &c. The plates U, before mentioned, also assist to keep the easings I steady and in position. If the brake is to be applied, that end of the frame J to which the chain -L or the piston-rod M is fastened is raised either by creating a vacuum in the piston, or by admitting compressed air or steam into the cylinder, or by winding the chain L upon the brake-shaft. If the said end of the frame J is raised, the other end, carrying the rollers J, will be depressed and will press down the free end of the frame E, in which the shaft F is journaled, and thereby the rims of the casings S will be pressed on the rails IV, and the rods 0 and the heads P will be pressed into the apertures in the radial arms and in the hubs, and the springs R will be compressed.
- As the hub N is revolved, the several springs R will be compressed successively as the several rods or 'stemsO are successively passed "into the corresponding 'radial arms, N, of the hub. If the shaft F is pressed downward, the clutch-pulley G will be moved'from the Wheel a, and thus the spring H is enabled to press the clutch-pulley G against the pulley D, so that the two will engage. The clutch-pulley D is being continually revolved from the pul- -ley B on the axle A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or from the pulley on the axle of the driv ing-wheels of the locomotive.- Ifthe pulley D is revolved the pulley G and the shaft F will also be revolved, and will revolve the casings S, and the rims of the casings are pressed against the rails by the springs R, and thus suffieient friction is produced to re tard the speed of the train or to stop the train entirely. 1 If the brakes are to be loosened, the
chain on the brake-shaft is released and the outer end of the frame J descends, and its inner end, which is connected with the frame E by a chain,'cl, is raised and raises the said frame E, thereby raising the cylindrical casings S from the rails when the brakes are ofp .erated by hand. As the shaft F moves upward, the wheel a, the edge of Whichis beveled, comes in contact with the beveled flange Plates is journaled in the frame J, and the pulley D is operated from the driving-wheel instead of from'thetruck-wheel; otherwise the construction and arrangement are the same.
Ido not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable features set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or mother applications for Letters Patent that I may make.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a brake wheel mounted on a shaft j ournaled in a frame pivoted below the car-bottom, of devices for pressing thebrake-wheel on the rail, fixed and loose clutch-pulleys on the shaft of the brakewheel, and a driving chain or belt for rotating one of the clutch-pulleys from one of the axles of the locomotive or car, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a brake-wheel j ournaled in a frame pivoted below the car-bottom, of loose and fixed clutch-pulleys on the shaft of the brakewheel, devices for revolving one of the clutch-pulleys from one of the axles of the car or locomotive, a spring for pressing the clutch-pulleys togetherwhen the brake-wheel is lowered, and a device for separating the clutch-pulleys when the brake-wheel is raised, v substantially as herein shown and described,
and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the brake-wheel mounted on the shaft F, pivoted in the frame E.
of devices for revolving the shaft of the brakewheel from one of the axles of the locomotive or car, the pivoted frame J, having one end resting on the frame E, and devices for raising that end of the frame J opposite the one resting on the frame E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for'the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with a brake wheel mounted on the shaft F, journaled in the frame E, pivoted to the car-bottom, of the frame J, pivoted below the ear-bottom, devices for r'a'is ing one end of the frame J, the rollers J 'onthe' opposite end of the frame J, which rollers rest on the frame E, and of devices for revolving the shaft of the brake-wheel from one of the axles of the locomotive, substantially ash'e'rein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the shaft F, jo'u'rnaled in a frame pivoted below the car-bottom, of brake-disks mounted on the ends of the same, a loose clutch-pulley, D, around which a drivdug chain or belt passes, which alsopasses around a pulley on one of the axles of the car or loeomotive, a sliding clutch-pulley, G, the spring H, and the beveled. wheel a, substan tially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. a 6.
