Description

'Nrrno STATES PATENT Enron.
IRoNlNoi-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,097, dated November 27, 1883. v
Application filed July 18, ISl. (Model.)
To all whomzlt may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES XV. L. HAY- WARD, of East l/Veymo'uth, county of Norfolk,
adapted to support ironing-boards of different sizes.
The apparatus also preferably comprises a compound ironing-board made of two separable portions, one of which, taken alone, forms a complete board of small size, suitable for ironing small tubular garments or tubular portions of garments-such as sleeves. The two portions of the board when placed together 'las `in use.
lie in one plane and form a board of large size-such as commonly employed for ironing skirts and large tubulary garments. The stand consists of a main standard having a broad base, (shown as formed by two diverging legs,) and provided with a brace to engage a projecting tongue on the ironing-board and hold it out as au arm substantially at rightangles to the said standard. A folding leg or support consisting of three portions jointed together is adapted, according to the way the said portions are arranged, to forni a support for the larger or smaller board, asmay be desired.V The standard is provided With a bracket or shelf to hold an iron, and the said bracket, brace, and supporting-leg for the board are all hingedor jointed to fold parallel with the main standard, so that the entire apparatus occupies but small space when not 'if desired, dilierent-sized boards may be employed with the stand; but, asv herein shown, a compound board is employed, consisting of a smaller portion of suitable size for the smallest board to be used, and having a tongue to be engaged and held by the main standard and its brace. Another portion, it-
, ted to encircle andsurround the smaller por- Y to the smaller portion without disengaging the latter from the standard, and the folding leg will be changed according as it is to support the smaller portion of the board alone or both portions together.
Figure l is a side elevation of an ironing apparatus embodying this invention, it being shown in full lines arranged to afford the largvest-sized board, and in dotted lines for the smaller-sized board; Fig. 2, a front vievvr of the stand when folded; and Figs. 3 and 4, top and under side views, respectively, of the comp pound board detached from the stand.
The standard o may have a pedestal, a, and is provided with legs b, affording a Wide hase, has in its upper end an opening or socket, c, (see dotted lines, Fig. 2,) to receive a tongue, d, of the ironing-board e, and is also provided with a brace, f, engaging a small projection, g, at the end ofthe said tongue, thus fastening the board e about at right angles to the standard a, the said standard, board, and brace being secured in this position by a key, h, entering a socket, i, in the said board. rlhe brace f is hinged or pivoted at 2, to fold up by the standard o when the apparatus is not in use. ywith asbestus-paper, (indicated by the heavy top line, Fig. 1, and the lozenge-Work, Fig. 2,)
to hold a flat-iron, is pivo'ted or hinged at Sto the standard o, so as to fold down beside it, as in Fig. 2, or to be held by the hook k in horizontal position When the apparatus is in use. rI he end of the ironing-board' e is supported by the folding leg, consisting of the three portions lm a, the former hinged at 4 to the standard a, so as to fold parallel therewith, or to extend diagonally down therefrom to the floor, as shown. in Fig. l, a suit-able shoulder, o, limiting its movement in this direction, and a hook, o', being employed to fasten it. The portion m is hinged to the portion Z at 5, and when used with alarge ironing-board extends along the door, While the portion n, hinged to the portion m at 6, stands vertical. to support the boardmear its end, it being preferably fastened thereto'. by the hook p. A hook, r, is shown, by which the portions m n may be fastened in proper relative position. Vhen the stand is to be used for a smaller board, the portion m is turned up vertically, as shown in dotted lines,
Fig. l, and the portion n extends down there- A. bracket or shelf, j, preferably faced4 from and is fastened to the under side of the board, as by .the hook 9'. lWhen' the apparatus is not in use, the portion a folds wholly upon the portion m, the latter upon the portion l, and the three thus folded together turn down beside the standard a, the lower crosspiece, c', of which has a suitable recess to receive them. rllhe portion n may have feet a a2, if desired, to afford a larger bearing-surface. rlhe board e, having the tongue d for attachment to the standard a, is provided with an eye, r, in its/under side, to receive the hook r of the portion a of the folding leg or support. If desired to use a largerboard, the one e might be removed and a larger one having a similar tongue, d, employed in place of it; but the more convenient way is to employ a portion, e, ofthe size desired for the larger board, it having a portion removed to exactly t thev board e, so that the two portions e e, taken together, will form a compound board of large size, adapted to be supported bythe standard a and folding leg l m a. rlhe outer por tion, c', is provided with one or more cross pieces, t, at its under side, extending across the recess in which the other portion, e, is received, and serving to support the said portion e, with its upper surface even with that of the portion e. `An other cross-piece, a, near the end of the portionc, at its upper side, supports the said portion e upon the portion e, near where the latter is itself supported on the standard. Vhen the two portions are used, they may be fastened together by the-hook w, the larger portion c being providedfwith an eye, p, in its under side, toV co-operatewiththe hook p of the portion n of the folding leg.
I claim- 1. The ironing-board and its supportingstand, consisting of a standard adapted to support one end of the said board, combined with the folding leg composed of three' portions hinged together and to the standard, as described, whereby they form a support at greater or less distance from the said stand- 45 ard, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. rlhe ironing-board e and the supplementa-l board e, connected therewith, substantially as shown andlescribed, combined with its supporting-stand, consisting of a standard adapted to support one end of the said board, and the folding leg composed of three portions hinged together and to the standard, 'as set forth, whereby they form a support a greater or less distance from the said standard, as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES XV. L. HAYVARD.
