SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,033, dated November 27, 1883.

To (4Z5 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Var. P. SHATTUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spiral Spring Posts, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my inventionis to furnish a post more especially for hitching purposes, but which may also be used for fencing or any other purpose where such a post is desirable, which shall be simple, cheap, durable, convenient, and one which at the same time, by its elasticity and freedom of motion in all directions, shall besafer than anything heretofore devised for similar purposes. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the AB B C O D represent the whole post. This is made of a single rod of steel or other elastic metal of suitable length, diameter, and shape. A is a ring at the top of the post, formed by bending the end of. the rod into a circle, to which the hitching-strap or Q halter is fastened. B B is the shaft of the! post, which at G C is formed into a spiral of one or more turns.
D represents thelower end of the post, which is inserted vertically and firmly into a pavement, block, or other permanent and solid foundation.
The base E E in the drawing is not claimed in the invention, being used simply for illustration of the position and one mode of attachment of the post.
\Vhat, therefore, I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
An improved spring-post for hitching or other purposes, consisting of a rod of elastic metal, provided with a suitable ring at the top, a series of spirals to allow freedom of motion in all directions, and itslower end adapted for attachment to any suitable base, all substant-ially as shown and described.
