UNITED STATES ATENT rricn.
WILLIAM H. LIXD, OF WILLIAMSIORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-SHIFTER.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,006, dated November 27', 1883.
Application filed September 29, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVILL'IAM H. LIXD, of the city of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Shifters, which improvement is fully set forth in the annexed specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of my device as applied between the tread of a wheel and the face of a rail; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 a View in cross-section taken on line a b of Fig. 2.
The object of my invention is to afford an easy means of propelling, by hand, cars or trucks; and it consists of a bar or lever with an indented wheel revolving upon and held in position by a bolt which passes through the heel or heavy part of the bar near the point, and forms the fulcrum of the lever, and is applied. aud operated as shown in the elevation Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The power or weight is applied at the upper end of the lever B, and when so applied the teeth in the indented wheel G adhere by slight indentation to the rail, thus preventing the bar from slipping back from its position. As the car is propelled, the operator pushes forward the bar upon the rail, the indented wheel operating as an easy means of carryin g the weight of the bar, while the purpose of the guides D D is to retain the bar in its proper position on the rail.
The construction of the machine is illustrated more in detail in Figs. 2 and 8. Bis M an iron or steel bar or lever, of any convenient length for the pu rpose required, having a heel, as shown atthe line a b, crossing said bar, and graduated to a point. C is a poi uted or toothed steel wheel, operating in a sen'iicircular recess or slot in the heel of the bar, and revolving upon a steel bolt or fulcrum of any desired strength or thickness, as shown by c. This bolt 0 is of suflicient length to extend laterally through the heel of the bar, as well as through the guides D D, and to admit of washers being applied so that the guides may be adapted to a rail of any ordinary width.
I am aware that prior to my invention a bar having the general shape and proportions of the bar described in the above specification. but without the indented wheel and other attachments before mentioned, has been used in shifting cars. I therefore do not claim that; but
\Vhat I do claim as my invention, and for which I desire to procure Letters Patent, is-
The pointed or toothed wheel. 6, bolt 0, guides D D, and lever B, combined and 0perat-ing substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 26th day of September, A. D. 1883.
