Claims priority, application Sweden June 1,1956 9 4 Claims. (CI. 20-53) The present invention relates to windows pivotal about a horizontal axis.
An object of the present invention is to provide hinge means or hearing devices for the pivots of such windows which will facilitate installation of the window sash in the window frame and also the removal of the sash from the frame without removal of the hinge means or bearing device from the window or frame.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a sealing device for windows of said kind having the outsides of the sash and frame covered by sheet members overlapping each other adjacent to the horizontal pivot axis of the window so as to prevent moisture from entering through the joint between the overlapping sheet members.
A further object of the present invention is to provide means preventing draught through certain recesses required in the window frame for the overlapping ends of the sheet members attached to the pivotal sash.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be obvious from the following description with refer ence to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a perspective fragmentary view showing the window sash in open position and the bearing device in a position during the installation or removal of the sash.
Fig. 2 is a perspective fragmentary view showing in full lines the bearing device in its normal operative position and the sash in closed position shown by dot and dashed lines and the sash in open position shown by dashed lines.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the covering bar or plate and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the bearing bar or plate.
Figs. 5 and 6 are plan and side views respectively of a plate or member to be attached to the window sash and carrying the pivot.

Thepresent invention may be applied to vertical, horizontal or inclining windows. Figs. 1, 2 and 7 show the present invention applied to a roof-window. On the outer side of each inclining side piece 1 of the window sash there is attached a member in the form of a plate 2 provided with holes 21 for screws and carrying a horizontal pivot 3 and a shorter projection or stop member 4 at some distance from the pivot. On each of the inclining side pieces 5 of the window frame a bearing'bar or plate 6 is attached, said plate having holes 22 (Fig. 4) for retaining screws. One end of this plate is bent to form a bearing yoke 7 for the pivot 3 which in the installation or removal of the sash is movable through the opening to the bottom of the yoke and vice versa, said yoke forming a semi-cylindrical bearing surface for the pivot.
The bearing plate at its edge adjacent to the sash is provided with a' recess 8 locatedat the same distance from the pivot 3 or the axis of. the semi-cylindrical bottom of the yoke 7 as the projection 4 so that, after swinging the sash a certain angle from its closed position, the projection 4 enters into the recess 8. On each bearing plate 6 a covering bar or plate 9is provided, the plate 9 in its normal operative position covering the opening of the bearing yoke 7 and also the recess 8 in the edge of the bearing plate 6. In this position, shown in Fig. 2, the pivot 3 cannot be moved out of the bearing yoke 7, and the projection or stop member 4 cannot be moved through the recess 8 because this is prevented by the covering plate 9. This covering plate is provided with a recess 10 corresponding to the recess 8 the recess 10 being so located that when the covering plate has been moved from its normal operative position to a position in which the opening of the bearing yoke 7 is free, the recess 10 of the covering plate 9 will be right before the recess 8 of the bearing plate 6 as shown by Fig. 1, in which position the sash, after being swung through a certain angle from closed position, can be removed from the window frame in which movement the projection 4 of the plate 2 passes through the registering recesses 8, 10.
The covering plate is attached to the bearing plate by means of two (or more) screws 11 projecting through slots 12 extending in the longitudinal direction of the covering bar or plate 9 and engaging with holes 13 in the bearing plate 6. When these screws have been unscrewed so far that their heads are free from the countersunk portions 14 of the slots 12 but the screws are still engaging with the threads of the holes 13, so that they loosely connect the covering plate with the bearing plate, the covering plate, while being connected with the bearing plate, is slidable in its longitudinal direction so far that the opening of the bearing yoke will be uncovered and the recesses 8, 10 are right before each other. Thus the covering plates 9 may be connected with the bearing plates 6 during installation and removal of the sash.
The invention concerning the sealing device is shown in Figs. 8-10 as applied to an inclining roof-window pivotable about horizontal pivots 3 located about at the half height of the window. The two pivots are secured to opposite side pieces 1 of the sash and are journalled in a bearing device 6, 7, 9 mounted on corresponding inclining side pieces 5 of the frame. This bearing device may correspond with the one described with reference to Figs. 1-7, but the projection 4 and the recesses 8, 10in the bars or plate 6, 9 may be omitted.
As particularly shown by Figs. 11-13, the side pieces 1 of the sash and the side pieces 5 of the frame above the pivots have offset portions 26 and 27 respectively, the
offset 26 forming an acute angle with the outwardly turned surface of the sash. The other offset 27 forms a continuation of the wall of a recess 28 in the side piece of the frame, said recess in sections perpendicular to the pivot axis of the window being substantially formed as a sector of a circle.
The portions of the pieces 1 and 5 above the offsets 26, 27 are covered by a channel-shaped sheet metal member the upwardly turned bottom portion 29 (Fig. 15) of which is secured to the piece 5 of the frame while its side walls 30 and 31 project downwards on the side of the piece 1 facing the window opening and the opposite side of the side piece 5 respectively. To the portion of the side piece 1 located below the pivot axis of the Window a channel-shaped sheet metal member is secured by its bottom portion 32, one side wall 33 of this member extending downwards over the side of the piece 1 turned to the window opening and the other side wall 34 extending downwards over the opposite side of the side piece 5 of the frame. In closed position of the window the bottoms 29 and 32 of the channel-shaped members are located in different planes, the upper end of the bottom portion 32 of the lower channel-shaped member projecting under the lower end of the bottom portion 29 of the upper channel-shaped member.
In order to obtain a weather-tight seal between the overlapping ends of the bottoms of the channel-shaped members, the lower end of the bottom portion 29 of the upper channel-shaped member is formed with a downwardly bent flange 34, and the upper end of the lower channel-shaped member is formed with an upwardly bent flange 35 which flanges in the closed position of the window co-operate with each other and form a tight joint or seal between the overlapping portions of the bottom portions 29 and 32. Corresponding to the offset 26, the flange 35 forms an acute angle to the bottom portion 32 whereby a better seal is obtained than with a right angle between the bottom portion 32 and the flange 35.
An arrangement of this kind requires relatively large recesses in the side pieces of the frame in order to create spaces for the upper ends of the bottom portions 32 of the lower channel-shaped members swinging with the sash. Without any covering of these recesses there would be some possibility for draught. In order to prevent such a draught, a plate 36 (Fig. 14) in the form of a sector of a circle is secured to the outer end of each pivot 3, this plate 36 being located inside the side wall 34 of the channel-shaped member 32-34 and the centre of the plate being located on the pivot axis of the window. In the closed position of the window this plate 36 will cover the recess 28 at the outer side of the side piece 5 of the frame,
Instead of securing this plate 36 to the pivot 3, it may be attached to the inside of the bottom portion 32 of the channel-shaped member 32--34 as shown in Figs. 18 and 19. Also in thiscase the plate 36 is provided in such a manner that the centre thereof and its rotation axis coincides with the axis 3.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described withreference to the drawings, but the construction of the details may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A window having a wooden frame and a sash, the sash having horizontal pivots located about at the mid height of the window, sheet units covering the outsides of the frame and sash, said sheet units including channelshaped sheet members covering the outer sides of side pieces of the frame and sash perpendicular to the pivot axis of the sash, the ends of the bottom portions of said channel-shaped sheet members overlapping each other adjacent to and outside said pivot axis, and flanges on said ends extending substantially parallel with said pivot axis and co-operating with each other to provide a tight joint between said overlapping ends in the closed position of the sash.
2. A window having a wooden frame and a sash, the sash having horizontal pivots located between the upper and lower ends of the-window, channel-shaped sheet units covering the outsides of the side pieces of the frame and sash perpendicular to and outside the pivot axis, the ends ofthe bottom portions of said channel-shaped sheet units overlapping each other adjacent to the pivot axis, said channel-shaped sheet units including channel members attached to the frame and channel members attached to the pivotal sash, an inwardly directed flange substantially parallel with the pivot axis on the overlapping end of the bottom portion of each channel-shaped sheet member attached to theframe, an outwardly directed flange substantially parallel with the pivot axis on the overlapping end ofthe bottom portion of each channel-shaped sheet member attachedto the sash, and said inwardly and outwardly directed flanges respectively being adapted to co-operate with each other so as to form a tight joint between said overlapping ends of the sheet members in the closed position of the sash.
3. A window as claimed in claim 2 wherein the flange of each channel-shaped sheet member attached to the sash forms an acute angle with the outwardly turned surface of the same member.
4. A window having a wooden frame and a sash, the sash having horizontal pivots located between the upper and lower ends of the window, sheet units covering the outsides of the frame and sash, said sheet units including channel-shaped sheet members covering side pieces of the frame and sash perpendicular to the pivot axis of the sash, the ends of the bottom portions of said channelshaped-sheet members overlapping each other adjacent to and outside the pivot axis, each of the said side pieces of the frame being provided with a recess adapted to give space for the overlapping ends of the bottom portions of the channel-shaped members attached to the pivotal sash, and plates movable with the sash and substantially perpendicular to said axis and adapted to cover lateral openings of said recesses.
