Description
UNITED STATES? PATENT OFFICE.
BRADFORD ROWE, OF MARYLAND, NEXV YORK.
BOOT-CRIMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,8785, dated December 17, 1842.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BRADFORD Rows, of Maryland, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Crimping Boot-Fronts, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specication:
Figure l is a perspective view of the machine.
A represents the bench; B, the center stationary jaw; C, the movable side jaws; D, the brass lining or covering of the jaws; E, the screw for closing the jaws; F, a crimping lever with a single arm, pair of pincers, windlass, and straps-with a boot front strained thereon and thrown back from the jaws in a position to be disengaged from the bench, a joint on which it turns; H, the boot front; I, the pincers; J, the strap; K, the axle; L, ratchet wheel; M, the pawl.
F2 is a crimp lever with a combination of arms, pincers, straps, axles, ratchets and pawls and a boot front strained on the lever and brought between the jaws.
N2 are the combined arms; I2, the pincers for taking hold of the edges of the leather; J2, the straps attached to the pincers and wound around the windlasses; K2, the windlasses; L2, the ratchet wheels and M2 the pawls; O, the winch for turning the axles or windlasses; P, the screws for closing the jaws of the pincers, C2, the joint on which the crimping lever turns.
To use this machine the leather should first be prepared as for any crimping mapincers I are then fastened to the edges of the leather and drawn out from the jaws by the windlasses which are held by the ratchets and pawls. The crimping lever is Vthen thrown back on the joint C2 from the jaws C and disengaged from the bench by'withdrawing the pin G2 and laid aside for the leather to dry thereon in its crimped state, and another crimping lever and straining apparatus put in the place thereof Or the crimping lever may be suffered to remain attached to the bench untily the leather be dried. By the use of the aforesaid combined pincers and removable crimping lever the boot front may be strained at the points required without the necessity of tacking the leather and may be dried on the lever on which it is crimped.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the pincers with the removable crimp as constructed and operated in the manner herein set forth.
BRADFORD ROI/VE.
