l Application tiled September 26, 1883; (No model.) I Y I I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bren-.ARD WHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick,in the county of Middlesex'and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metal-Crimping Tools,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap tool for ycrimping or swag- 1oA ing the rim of a sheet-metal cap upon the hanged mouth of a can-spout-as, for example, theK spout of a varnish-can-such spout being fitted with a cork, which it is-desired to protect bythe cap.A This object I havejac-v I5 complishedy by the novel means hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompany-- ing drawings, in which-.
Figure 1 represents a side viewppartlyiu section, of "a to'ol 'embodying my`invention.
2o Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view thereof. Figs.
3 and 4 are detail views illustrating the oper'- lation of the tool. f*
` Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designatesthe stock of the tool, fitted on a central spindle, B, lto revolve and move longitudinally thereon, the spindle being vprovided with a circumferential groove,
C, of the proper width, into which enters the end of a screw, D, ofthe stock. l.
the spindle B I is a disk, E, which constitutesthe bearingof the tool, and the lower surface of .whichv is provided with a concentric rib vor shoulder, F, within the edge ofthe disk, to enter a corresponding countersink, G, (see- Fig. 2,) in the cap, for convenenceof centering the tool; From the lower end of the stock A project outwardly a series of oblique shafts, H, in this l `example three in number, which, are at like angles to the spindleB, and on the lower ends or portions-of which are fitted rollers I, to ren volve thereon, the shafts being fixed. These rollers I constitute the crimping ldevices of the tool, and are respectively provided with a Y which is beveled, to impingeagainstthe top of the Aspindle-disk E, whiley the lower edge On the'outer or lower endof 'On'the obliqueshaftsHarearrangedsprings circumferential groove, J, the upper .edge of K, which-act on the rollers I with a vtendency to keep their upper edges in contact with the disk E,
In applying my tool to -use the sheet-imatal'vv 5'5 ,cap is placed-on the flanged ,mouth of the proper spout, and the disk E is held down upon the cap. The stock A is vthen depressed and at the same time revolved on the spindle KB,.as by ya handle, L, or by a bit-brace or 6o other suitable means, when theerollers I are forced in an inward or upward direction, due to the Obliquity of the shafts H, while they are also caused to revolve simultaneously on their own axes and that of the spindle B, due to their forcible contact with the disk E, and to the fact `that they share the motion of the stock, and by this means the lower edges of the roller-grooves are-forced against ther-ini f vthe cap inthe proper manner to crimp or 7o ,swage such rim under the flange ofthe spout.
What I claim asr new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv y l. A sheet-metal-crimping tool consisting of the stationary central spindle having its lower end provided with 'the bearing-'disk E,
vthe revolving and longitudinally-movable stock, the oblique shafts projecting outwardly from the stock, the crimping-rollers of the shafts having circumferential grooves J, and 8o the lsprings arranged on the shafts to act on i the crimpiligrollers, the whole adapted to operate substantially ,as described, for the purpose set forth. v 32. The bearing-disk havingthe concentricrib or shoulder Fjon`its lower surface, in combination with the spindle B, stock `A, oblique shafts H, grooved. rollers I, and springsn K, substantially as and forthe purp osedescribed.
3. The crimping-rollers, each having a circumferential groove, oneedge of which is beveled and the other undercut, in vcombination with the oblique shafts H, springsK, stock A,
and spindle B, substantially as and'forthe purpose described.-
Inv testimony whereof `Ihave hereunto setv my hand and seal in the presence of two subl scribinglwitnesses. v thereof is undercut, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4,- I' toact onthe rim of the cap, ashereinafter4 '5 0 explained.
